As a maths naive I'm a) not sure how much more useful it is to have 31 trillion digits as opposed to 22 trillion digits but b) well impressed.

OP posts:

I struggle with the fact that you think having an adam's apple is the same as being a bit tall.

Your daughter as a lesbian may well not be as impressed by a lesbian with an adam's apple.

steppemum · 15/03/2019 13:02

you must only know a very limited group of women, if you have never seen one with an adams apple.
Some women, (not trans) do have them. It isn't that weird, odd or unusual.

Some women also have very 'masculine' body shapes, broad shoulders and narrow hips for example, or very tall and square.

None of those make them a man, it just means they are part of the wide range of women.

Not sure why the 'lesbian' is in italics. I am obviously missing something there Hmm

Funkaccino · 15/03/2019 13:07

I have never known a woman with an Adams' apple who didn't also have a penis. I don't live in an all-male commune and have known the normal amount of women, what with them being half the population.

Lesbian was italicised because it's important to the sentence. Lesbians tend to not be keen on penis.

Weetabixandshreddies · 15/03/2019 13:10

Sorry, it's pretty obvious from the various photos and the write up Pink News did. Body shape, jawline, adams apple and one photo where it's clear what side they 'dress on'.

I think this is a terrible thing to say.

steppemum · 15/03/2019 13:12

I have never known a woman with an Adams' apple who didn't also have a penis

that is your shortcoming.
They do exist. They are not even that unusual.
As I said - you are projecting your assumptions here. Women (again, not transwomen) do sometimes have a prominent adams apple.

I hope my daughter will have enough sense to find out if someone is trans before jumoing to conclusions as you have done.

Funkaccino · 15/03/2019 13:16

that is your shortcoming

I'm sure I have many shortcomings, but none of them are that I have yet to meet a woman with an adam's apple.

OvaHere · 15/03/2019 13:16

I think this is a terrible thing to say.

It's just observation. I did say I didn't post about it yesterday because I think there are more pressing things to focus on and it was fairly obvious how the thread would end up. I don't think women should be gaslighted when they can clearly see someone described as female is not.

steppemum · 15/03/2019 13:16

An Adam's apple is usually a feature of adult males, because its size in males tends to increase considerably during puberty. However, some women also have an Adam's apple

from wiki

by the way, everyone has one, just mens are usually more prominent

NopeNi · 15/03/2019 13:19

"It SUCKS I have to say. Transwomen are VASTLY overrepresented in tech - something about the culture, plus the autism comorbidity. And they do not face any institutional barriers - maybe after they come out, but tech TW are invariably the late transitioning kind and got to adulthood with male privilege and male socialisation. It's the exact opposite of inspiring to see their accomplishments celebrated as female accomplishments"

This exactly ^

And the fact that they run the internet is partly why we as actual biological women are no longer allowed to have a word to describe us as such.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 15/03/2019 13:23

Does the tech world have a high rate of transwomen? was my main point.

Weetabixandshreddies · 15/03/2019 13:24

I don't think women should be gaslighted when they can clearly see someone described as female is not.
Do you know this for a fact? I can't see any mention of it anywhere (not that we should be told really)

Ereshkigal · 15/03/2019 13:25

If it's true, yes, we should be told.

TheFallenMadonna · 15/03/2019 13:30

You think you should be told if someone is trans if they do something notable in an open (not single sex) space?

Funkaccino · 15/03/2019 13:30

its development is considered a secondary sexual characteristic of males that appears as a result of hormonal activity.

You forgot that bit. From wiki. Doesn't tie up with Adams apples not being unusual in women does it?

You said it's like a tall woman when actually it's more like a very thin 20 year old man with DD breasts. It could happen but it doesn't tend to.

Ereshkigal · 15/03/2019 13:34

You think you should be told if someone is trans if they do something notable in an open (not single sex) space?

Yes. I don't believe in gender identity ideology, so I don't believe male people should be able to pass themselves off as women, and get praised for being "women". Praise for being an MTF and doing something inspiring, great. This is not based on this particular case. I don't know enough about this person.

OvaHere · 15/03/2019 13:34

Do you know this for a fact? I can't see any mention of it anywhere (not that we should be told really)

No it's not mentioned anywhere. A bit like all those crime reports that document female crime. We aren't allowed accurate records of anything now.

If observations bother you so much also go take it up with the gay men on datalounge who also have eyes (and seem to think the radfem harridans should be happy to own this one).

TheFallenMadonna · 15/03/2019 13:35

I don't think she is making a big deal out of being a woman.

Ereshkigal · 15/03/2019 13:36

As in of course they can personally describe themselves as "women" according to their belief system, but I don't have to agree and no one should have to pretend they do.

Ereshkigal · 15/03/2019 13:36

Not talking about this specific person, I was answering a general point.

TheFallenMadonna · 15/03/2019 13:40

But this thread is about one specific person. And the person who is making a big deal about her being a woman is the OP.

Funkaccino · 15/03/2019 13:43

Actually I think all of the papers have made a big deal of this being a woman in tech. And she's on a lesbians in tech website and is wearing a women in tech shirt in her photos.

Ereshkigal · 15/03/2019 13:43

So? You asked me a question about my personal opinion generally. I answered.

steppemum · 15/03/2019 13:46

its development is considered a secondary sexual characteristic of males that appears as a result of hormonal activity.

yes obviously, but it clearly says that women can have them too, which was my point all along.
We all know they are a male characteristic, but they are not EXCLUSIVELY a male characteristic, as women can have them too.
And incidentally, some men don't have them.

And we are only talking about how prominent or not prominent a feature is that WE ALL HAVE. Everyone has an adams apple, it is just that in MOST men the larynx thickens during puberty making it more prominent.

But they are SOMETIMES prominent in women too.

Have I made it clear enough for you now?

dear me, it is like paddling through syrup.

The plural of ancedote is not data, so just because it is outside of your experience, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

TheFallenMadonna · 15/03/2019 13:50

I took your comment "If it's true, we should be told", to be about this specific person. I did then ask a more general question, to which you replied you didn't necessarily mean this particular person. So I must have misunderstood the first commemt.

TheFallenMadonna · 15/03/2019 13:51

I certainly agree that lots of other people have made a big deal about it being a woman doing this.
