'So my first book is being published by Penguin Press. It’s a political discussion (‘polemic’ sounds too angry) how British trans people are discriminated against in every aspect of life. Sick of the media conversation so starting my own. Stay tuned!'

It's now being sold at a normal price. Cheaper than Irreversible Damage but even with the cost saving I'll be sticking with the latter.

Anyone else get excited when they see LangCleg posting, then realise it's a thread from a couple of years ago?

anyway lol at the book's synopsis. "Trans people are denied a meaningful voice" in this debate.

So all those trans voices we've been hearing aren't meaningful? What a rude thing for Shon to say!

@EcclesThePeacock

Well, let's wait and see (assuming someone will take one for the team and read it...). If there are instances of genuine transphobic discrimination then they should be dealt with.

Speaking of books...did everyone get the memo that we hardbacks have decided that paperbacks are to be described as 'limpcovers' from now on? (Whether they like it or not).

Could someone tell me what rights transpeople haven't got in the UK, that other people have got?

They want a special right, that others don't have. It's the right not to hear the word "no".

Seems to be a best seller 7 weeks before release. Has anyone here ordered?

I'm loving the blurb! Excerpts follow:

'This is a monumental work and utterly convincing - crystal clear in its understanding of how the world should be' Judith Butler

'An inspiring call for coalition. This book is a game-changer' Owen Jones

'If you're sick of seeing people's humanity reduced to cannon fodder for the culture war, read this book' Ash Sarkar

With extraordinary clarity and intellectual vigour, Shon Faye cuts through the concern-trolling, the sly bigotry, and the unserious moral panics that so often characterise the discourse surrounding transgender lives. Though she writes out of the authority of experience, her work transcends the personal, making a plain and impassioned case for solidarity and human rights. The result is an invigorating and deeply researched polemic, and a necessary addition to the evolving conversation on civil rights in the twenty-first century. -- Mark O'Connell

They have the same rights as everyone else. What they want is the privilege to enter spaces and places where they are not permitted or wanted.

I was a bundle of excited anticipation for a moment there, I thought we were finally, finally going to get chapter and verse on what rights trans people don't have compared to the rest of us and what rights they need, and then the bubble burst after the synopsis from BettyDuMonde, such disappointment.

As for that letter to Miranda, the sheer spite just oozes from it. A nasty letter from a nasty individual and as always one of the be kind crew, the oh so tolerant ones, the ones who, unsurprisingly, never practice what they preach.

Trans people with a GRC actually have extra rights over everyone else, they have the right to alter the sex marker on their Birth Certificate which is an official legal document. Furthermore trans people with a GRC are given rights not given to any other member of the sex class they were born into.

Women are erased, according to Faye. And erased people can't buy shit like this.

@RoyalCorgi those snippets of reviews sound very much like the fake ones that you get on self published ebooks

they all contain the usual word salad that they use too - full of words thrown into sentences to make them look clever but they mean nowt

It's always amusing to see Judith Butler talking about clarity as if she has any clue at all what clarity is.

No doubt Waterstones and Foyles are getting their front windows displays done and a whole wing of the shops ready to promote it

Probably expecting lines around the block for its release (even though we all know that the intended audience never buy anything or spend any of their own money - unless its gofundme cash)

Erm, eloquent?

I hope this book will include an analysis of the power structures and privileges at play when Shon was at university, got in a rage with Shon's then girlfriend (this was before Shon identified as gay and was still doing repressed Catholic Brideshead Revisited cosplay) & cut up her clothes and trashed her belongings.

It's also really difficult to imagine that someone as distinguished as Butler believes herself to be would describe a work by the very un-distinguished Shon Faye as "monumental".

70 quid is really taking the piss..don't think I have ever seen a book that price, or even half that, in my life!

Some fabulous photographic books cost a lot, about £30 or £40. I've occasionally bought one as a special present. Think how many wonderful photos of Shon there must be in this £70 treasure! Aren't you in raptures at the prospect?

I saw Owen's book for fifty pence at a car boot sale

I still wasn't tempted

I know this is old but it’s still very funny.
