Small act of rebellion

WAHF · 02/11/2018 18:35

I'm a public sector employee so no chance of getting them to think critically unfortunately. However I have begun a fun game. I have to fill out referrals on a fairly regular basis and they're often on a bog standard word docs which are obviously editable. On each and every one I've been changing the box for gender to say sex instead. Not had it raised by anyone yet (these are internal and external referrals) and no one may ever notice but it gives me great satisfaction. Anyone else engaging in small acts of rebellion?

Putting 'woman adult human female' stickers in every public loo and changing room I visit.

Gncq · 02/11/2018 19:22

I always without fail cross out the word "gender" and write "sex" in any form filling situation including forms for my childen.

Their school might think I'm slightly mad or they don't notice but I do feel better for it.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 02/11/2018 19:25

Yes, I've just crossed out gender and added in sex on the consent forms for my children's flu vaccine.

EElisavetaOfBelsornia · 02/11/2018 19:27

Greebols I just did the same thing!

TinyRick · 02/11/2018 19:28

I've also crossed off gender and written sex.

Weirdly I have only had to do it at the hospital so far. The school forms correctly asked for sex.

Love it WAHF . Small acts of rebellion are very satisfying. I also enjoyed putting Posie's Adult human female stickers in every service station loo on a long road trip recently. And I had a word with two very nice Cancer Research volunteers at a service station explaining that direct debits and donations had been stopped due to the cervix havers adverts. They were shocked and promised to go home and research via goggle and Mumsnet and get back to head office!

WAHF · 02/11/2018 19:48

Ah, this heartens me that I'm not the only one. I've decided my defence will be that I did not want to upset anyone by assuming their gender, so feel it is more fitting to stick to biological fact. I'll probably get a pat on the back for that.

I left my Starbucks cup with "adult human female" written on it in the train station waiting room all inclusive loo. I added in "woman: noun" and "i.e.does not have a penis" I left it on top of the folded-up baby change as was the only horizontal surface available. There was no bin to put it in so used it to make a statement in lieu of no stickers (pun not intended ).

I plan on getting some stickers and targeting my local costa, library, bus stops and wherever else I think would be good.

WAHF · 02/11/2018 20:22

I'm going to nick some of these ideas. It saddens me that I can't raise my head above the parapet due to my job, but I'll keep on doing what I can & snort in an unladylike manner during every small rebellion

I am quietly raising the profile of our company’s self id policy. My line manager is already GC and when I raised concerns with him he said the introduction of self Id would be a major cultural shift and would need consultation, particularly as we have a wide multicultural community who may not be aware of the debate. I then pointed out it had been made official policy months ago and no one was aware...

Small acts of rebellion rock. I take my kicks wherever I can get them. And I have the patience of a saint...

Dd (9) came home from school with a script for a little play they’d done in class of “The Gingerbread Man”. Every single time the word “gingerbread MAN” appeared in the script, she’d written “and woman” next to it. She’d obviously not quite got the context right but I was so proud that she’s spotted that and “corrected” it that I almost cried.

PerverseConverse · 03/11/2018 09:37

Ah yes, homework. Both my daughters have written pieces that show our rad fem leanings
My eldest wrote "adult human female" in brackets after the word woman in her story. My youngest wrote about Posie Parker for her RE homework on Missions: who do you know who has a clear mission in life? What is their mission? Why is this their mission? How do they live out their mission? How does their religion influence this? I was so proud!

rightreckoner · 03/11/2018 09:40

Love Posie Parker appearing in RE homework !

I hear they were looking for nominations for names for the new £50 note ...ShockGrin

PerverseConverse · 03/11/2018 09:43

Eldest's science homework is to write about 2 famous scientists. We were looking at female scientists a few weeks back when talking about the suffragettes and so will write about two female scientists.

Putting 'woman adult human female' stickers in every public loo

I've been doing this too. In one location they called the Police to report a hate crime!

Badstyley · 03/11/2018 20:06

On my son’s spelling test the other week they had the word woman. I was ranting about the ‘womxn’ thing at the time so told him to put womxn as the answer, and told him that if the teacher said anything to say that he’d seem on the BBC web sight that that was is how it’s spelt now.

He did it as well, and gave the answers provided by me. It’s not helpful but it gave me a laugh.

DS likes to get in on my little feminist actions.

Gileswithachainsaw · 03/11/2018 20:08

Love all.of these!!

booze2shoes · 04/11/2018 11:27

I'd like to get some of these. Where do I get them?

TheMatriarch · 04/11/2018 11:29

I filled in an RSPCA adoption application form and crossed out gender and replaced it with sex.

Gentlygently · 04/11/2018 19:04

I asked for my workplace diversity training to be changed to include sex as a protected characteristic. Surprise surprise the current training had ‘gender identity’ instead.....

ErrolTheDragon · 04/11/2018 19:34

I hear they were looking for nominations for names for the new £50 note ...

They only use dead British people on banknotes (well, apart from the monarch, obv) so I hope we don't see Posie or any of our other current heroines on one for many years!

And this banknote is earmarked specifically for a scientist; I've nominated a truly world class inspirational female scientist, who managed to achieve a long and successful career and also be a mother - Dorothy Hodgkin, one of the very few women to have ever won a Nobel Prize for Chemistry (solo, not shared with any men!)

PerverseConverse I just had a question regarding your DC using Posie as an example for their RE homework. You mention this question “How does their religion influence this?” does Posie have a religious background, is that part of her reasoning? I am just curious as I had always thought she was Free Speech campaigner.

OhGodWhatTheHellNow · 04/11/2018 20:39

So sad, I'm a school secretary and no one changed gender to sex on their forms Sad. I could've done it on mine (my dcs in the school) but it seemed a bit pointless when I'm the only person reading them...I did go through SiMS to change the bloody default Parental Address from Mr and Mrs His First Name his Second Name to Ms/Miss/Mrs Her and Mr Him, does that count?

PerverseConverse · 04/11/2018 20:51

@IdaBWells Posie is as far as I know, atheist and against religion in general as it oppresses women and girls by telling them what they can and can't wear, who they can marry, how to behave etc so that's what my dd wrote. She was told "really interesting ideas" and "good research" DD attends a catholic school so goes against the grain!
