What’s your definition of womxn?

BabyTeeth · 05/10/2018 23:08

The Wellcome Collection are doing an event about about ‘the ways that womxn are included, excluded, catalogued and classified.’
wellcomecollection.org/events/W5e9eyYAACUAMqcz

Rather than explain what womxn means, they link to the Urban Dictionary definition.
www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=womxn

If you’re using a word and aren’t sure if everyone reading will know what it means you could explain it rather than link to a site where anyone can write the definition.

IMO.

The Trans demand activists are working on changing the OED definition of woman.

UpstartCrow · 05/10/2018 23:13

''This event is part of Daylighting, a four-day programme of events to challenge archives, change narratives and amplify new voices.''

What an interesting way to describe it. How many people will be airbrushed out of this brave new worlxd order, we wondxr.

Serfisafleur · 05/10/2018 23:14

Nothing wrong with the existing one imo.

AngryAttackKittens · 05/10/2018 23:15

For a start I wouldx't use womxn at all, becaxse I'm not a pretentioxs arsehole.

ShcfG · 05/10/2018 23:17

"womxn"??!!

That's not even a bloody word! At first reading, I just thought the OP's phone was playing up!

Serfisafleur · 05/10/2018 23:19

From the urban dictionary
Women:
Extremely expensive, extremely time consuming, extremely upsetting, extremely complicated, extremely high maintenance, extremely annoying at times, & extremely emotional all the time. Women also make some very bad cooks, so be careful. Backstabbing gold digging bitches.

Grin I am simply not bothered by such a load of crap!
ShcfG · 05/10/2018 23:21

And I love the photo they use...

wellcomecollection.org/events/W5e9eyYAACUAMqcz

Is that a photo of a bloke, manfully mansplaining something to three women??!! Grin

AngryAttackKittens · 05/10/2018 23:24

Middle woman is doing the "you are wrong but I'm not sure if it would be rude to point that out" gesture.

UpstartCrow · 05/10/2018 23:24

Oh come on, you have no idea how they identify.
And anyway he's probably manfully explaining that 'Daylighting' means creating cracks to let in the light or something cool like that, and not any other less desirable kind of lighting. No siree Bob.

JellySlice · 05/10/2018 23:27

Daylighting? Or gaslighting?

UpstartCrow · 05/10/2018 23:30

Gaslight, sunlight, they are completely different things. He's sure of it. Look, he has an earring! He's bound to be sensitive.

I'm not saying thats a dick pic, but it could a dick pic from their reaction.

ShcfG · 05/10/2018 23:33

Nearest woman is looking at his piece of paper and thinking, "Are you sure?"
Or possibly, "Are you on glue?"
Woman on the left is thinking, "Aw, just fuck off, you wee gobshite."

But all are too nice and polite to say anything!

AnotherBewilderedQuoll · 05/10/2018 23:42

"Woomksn" ? "Wimmksn"? Oh, I get it, the letters 'a' and 'e' must be as dangerous and bigotty as the letter 'k' that had to be removed from 'folx' Confused

R0wantrees · 06/10/2018 00:12

'womxn'

"A spelling of "women" that is a more inclusive, progressive term that not only sheds light on the prejudice, discrimination, and institutional barriers womxn have faced, but to also show that womxn are not the extension of men (as hinted by the classic Bible story of Adam and Eve) but their own free and separate entities. More intersectional than womyn because it includes trans-women and women of color.
Womxn's voice's have been excluded from mainstream dialogues for generations."

Eh?

R0wantrees · 06/10/2018 00:13

Its free and on Friday 19 October 2018, 15:30—17:00

Knowmydisrespect · 06/10/2018 00:21

I reckon that photo was taken a fraction of a second before the woman in the middle vomitted all over the manful mansplainer's wee booklet.

heresyandwitchcraft · 06/10/2018 00:24

SERIOUSLY?!?!
The Wellcome are actually non-ironically using the spelling womxn?
What are they doing?
How are you even supposed to pronounce that?
Why would women of colour be excluded from "womyn"? Why would you even change the standard spelling from "women" for an event like this? Trans women (NB, I'd bet they'll get flack for the hyphen) are literally males. So if you want to talk about women being perceived only as an extension of men, not a separate set of unique individuals in their own right as a biological sex, you might want to take a long hard look at yourselves. Because you're perpetuating that exact myth by centering male feelings in using this load of rubbish.
No woman of colour is going to feel excluded by the word woman.
This is all coming from one place, and one place only.
The males who want to be perceived as women.

seafret · 06/10/2018 00:29

I have no idea any more what it real and what is a joke.

Is this a joke? Like that 2012 sitcom thing?

Has someone put something in the water? Or are loads of people just going insane?

R0wantrees · 06/10/2018 00:33

Prof. Michael Biggs,

"I have entered this debate not because I am a feminist but because freedom of speech is one of the highest values of a democratic society, and the basic foundation of university life.
Transgender activism poses a grave threat to freedom of speech. I think of the young MPhil student who had to disguise herself to attend this meeting because she feared the reaction
of fellow students. This is the generation that we have educated "

stillathing · 06/10/2018 06:49

Wtaf?
Since when has the term woman not included black women?

And trans men is where trans intersects with women because woman is a biological term not an outfit.

So. Sick. Of. This. Crap.

ChrysanthemumsAreMums · 06/10/2018 06:58

This articulates my thoughts

KataraJean · 06/10/2018 07:06

Wow, I have no words, the word woman is being taken away, if it has not already gone.

What do we call the class of people who have female reproductive organs and give birth? You know, when we need to talk about the multiple issues which affect them and only them? I presume women remains okay for that?

And why is there not a parallel definition of mxn? Or is there, let me check.

KataraJean · 06/10/2018 07:13

Okay, Urban Dictionary says mxn is short for Mexican.

Given that womxn is to remove the men from women then it makes sense that there is no parallel definition of mxn.

I note that the third Urban Dictionary definition says a misspelling of women.

I may take the hit and write and ask the curators how they propose to define the class of people who historically and currently have female reproductive organs and give birth, and if the use of the word womxn is not simply setting up a new category of exclusion?

TheCrowFromBelow · 06/10/2018 07:16

What a load of eye roll inducing bollocks.
From the crappy man centric photo to the shite suggestion that the word “woman” excludes parts of the female population based on ethnicity.
Trans is not a race. Stop trying to conflate the two.

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 06/10/2018 07:17

The Trans demand activists are working on changing the OED definition of woman

But what to? I’ve never heard of a good explanation on what TRA think it should mean.
