Is the OED now hate speech?

Interesting to note some of the sources of the complaints: twitter.com/Direct_PS/status/1044263398333132800

I have emailed them, called their behaviour disgraceful. No more business from me.

MsJeminaPuddleduck · 25/09/2018 21:29

I've cancelled my regular Ocado order for this wk and told customer services to let me know when they put out a media statement on this and I'll use that to determine whether to permanently jump ship or not.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 25/09/2018 21:31

This issue has brought me back to Mumsnet after over a year away. Will trot off now to donate.

MipMipMip · 25/09/2018 21:38

What have Lush done this time?

It would be fascinating if stonewall complained about a board with their own definition on it. And if it stayed up it would open up a lot of people’s eyes to what self id would include.*

I really like this idea.

PerverseConverse · 25/09/2018 21:52

I've also emailed Ocado and told them to stick it.
Maybe we could devise a list of women-hating companies to boycott.

JillyArmeeen · 25/09/2018 22:00

What have ocado done? I seem to have missed it.
They are a customer of primesite, I can't work out how they have been dragged onto this.
I can't afford ocado anyway but a list of others would be great.

RiverTam · 25/09/2018 22:02

Jilly Ocado tweeted supporting Primesight’s decision to take Posie’s billboard down.

numptynuts · 25/09/2018 22:05

Twitter isn't for the faint-hearted is it.

Pulling up my big adult female pants and going in. I'm going to fight this, I thought I'd peaked before but today I've reached new, dizzying heights.

Good idea.

Stonewall say transwomen are women.
These are the people Stonewall consider trans.... and list them all. Ordinary people think that when people say 'trans' they mean people with gender dysphoria who've had surgery and hormones, and not the reality.

JillyArmeeen · 25/09/2018 22:42

RiverTam, thank you for the explanation. I get it now.
Wonder who does their twitter and ads, they've obviously not thought this through.

AbsintheFriends · 25/09/2018 22:47

"Woman: transgender, transsexual, gender-queer (GQ), gender-fluid, non-binary, gender-variant, crossdresser, genderless, agender, nongender, third gender, two-spirit, bi-gender, trans man, trans woman, trans masculine, trans feminine and neutrois. (Oh, and also adult human female)"

Listing what surgery is, and what it isn't, (with percentages) would be useful too. And of course the reason we don't do this is the poor "genuine" people who will get caught in the backlash.

Gillwill57 · 25/09/2018 23:23

Ridiculous so basically a true fact being removed because men dont like fact

rosablue · 26/09/2018 00:36

Anyone else wondering how long it will be until the TRAs start to attack the Oxford Dictionary and other dictionary companies to get them to change the definition of women in the dictionary?

Will be interesting to see just how long they are able to hold out for and when they update their definition... because the way things are going at the moment they're definitely going to be updating it, even it they add a second definition rather than change the entire thing from how it is currently.

It would be good to get a statement from the dictionary companies that they are not planning on changing the definition of woman any time soon - that although language evolves this particular word hasn't.

Likewise, it would be good to get the BMJ/Royal Colleges of Medicine, Surgery, etc to provide a definition of woman and man to ensure that doctors know exactly what sex people are as it can have important effects of health if the individual is treated as if they were the wrong sex...

silentcrow · 26/09/2018 00:39

And there goes the Standing For Women Twitter account @Humanfemales.

FFS.

AssassinatedBeauty · 26/09/2018 00:46

Wtf. How is it so fucking easy to shut down women's voices?

Ereshkigal · 26/09/2018 01:28

Twitter is a disgraceful misogynistic cesspool.

OlennasWimple · 26/09/2018 02:52

Fuck you Twitter

Thank you Mumsnet

Iused2BanOptimist · 26/09/2018 04:25

But what new definition for Woman can the dictionaries possibly find that is an accurate fit?
Massive own goal by Ade. Publicity money can't buy and I love how they refer to him as Mr not Dr. That's the direction his career is heading.

Iused2BanOptimist · 26/09/2018 04:30

Bugger twatter. Anyway, reminds me to buy a t shirt and give another donation.

Iused2BanOptimist · 26/09/2018 04:35

Also I haven't filled in that twitter consultation yet, I will really let rip now.
Are people adding their Twitter names as asked? It's not compulsory. I'm not sure about that.

ThefusilliJerry · 26/09/2018 06:29

I’ve just seen that times article on Twitter. It’s as if harrop has never heard of the law of libel. May be he hasn’t? Ms Minshull please see a solicitor!!

Beesandfrogsandfleas · 26/09/2018 06:47

The definition of words like “consent” and “paedophile” may also be changing soon.
Thin edge of the wedge.
