He said that he may have to write a blog about it or do a second version of his book. I don't think he's backtracking.

NotMeOhNo · 22/09/2018 10:30

I don't think he should feel obliged to address trans issues. His views on gender are clear. Trans ideology is a form of religious belief: the idea of brain souls in tutus or overalls.

Ereshkigal · 22/09/2018 10:37

Agree.

Ereshkigal · 22/09/2018 10:38

Nothing short of complete capitulation will please them, we've all learned that.

Ereshkigal · 22/09/2018 10:39

As you said, boatyard!

Onlyinanemergency · 22/09/2018 10:51

I read "How not to be a Boy" in one sitting! As a mother of a small DD and DS, and a "sensitive" husband who only really came round to feminism after the birth of DD I thought this was a really important book. And I loved Peep Show! (Sorry to derail...)

SpannerInTheWorks · 22/09/2018 11:06

Re the JHB row.

She said something (rather idiotic IMHO) about having got to Oxford through brains not privilege. He replied that he had got to Cambridge through brains AND privilege, and finished his tweet with the words "you thick Oxford twat".

It was supposed to be a joke about brains and Oxford/Cambridge rivalry. She didn't like it (fair enough), he apologised properly and deleted his tweet because it was being RT-ed.

MipMipMip · 22/09/2018 11:15

Dud you see the intro he planned to put in his book? You'll like it.

Going to have to buy How not to be a boy now.

LangCleg · 22/09/2018 11:32

I like Robert. But I think he will lose courage and run away from this. I honestly don't think he could cope with a full-on TRA onslaught.

NothingWithoutEffort · 22/09/2018 11:33

He won't get a full attack though, will he? Because he's a man.

KittyKlawsReturns · 22/09/2018 11:36

Whatever the case, Webb was just the performer, not the writer. Holding him responsible for a character's opinions is as moronic as thinking Anthony Hopkins actually eats census takers.

Even if he wasn't just performing the lines and he wrote them, this is television - creativity means that characters who are not particularly likeable or PC can be created. What you do if you are easily offended is not watch or switch off not go on a bloody Twitter rampage smiting anyone you fancy for not using language the way you deem appropriate. When you do it makes you an arsehole regardless of gender.

FermatsTheorem · 22/09/2018 11:45

Yes, precisely, Kitty. Writers do not people their imaginary universes with clones of themselves (well not unless they're spectacularly bad writers writing particularly bad fanfiction aimed exclusively at an audience of their mates on Tumblr).

Thegirlinthefireplace · 22/09/2018 12:05

I know, its lunacy to assume a written character portrays the views of the shows writers. I watched a drama last night containing a neo nazi, racist antagonist. Does this mean the writer is a neologism nazi racist? 🙄

Ahhhh note to self - never post on a moving bus...

Sadly I think you're right...

LangCleg · 22/09/2018 13:07

No way to do it without being prepared for confrontational maniacs forcing you into confrontations. He's not that type of person, is he?

Ereshkigal · 22/09/2018 13:15

Hopefully Graham Linehan would have his back.

Helmetbymidnight · 22/09/2018 13:16

I think its been on his mind for a while, and he - this might be my imagination - DID backtrack once.
However, I saw him tweet to someone gender critical about 6 weeks ago, saying how much he admired them and he felt he personally should stand up and say more.

I think he's aware of the consequences.

Ereshkigal · 22/09/2018 13:16

Also without a full recantation of his heresy, they won't relent. I'm not sure he'd be prepared to do that.

NoSquirrels · 22/09/2018 13:20

He knows the score. He knew it before he posted earlier this week. The. He posted what he wanted to put in his book but was advised not to by his publishers.

I’ll bet you a pound to a penny he’s been advised to stay out if the rows whilst promoting the book (paperback out fairly recently) and now most of the promotion is over he’s feeling like he can afford to...

Betcha Abi Burdess is a big GC feminist too.

terryleather · 22/09/2018 15:36

I really want my doubts to be proved wrong...keep forgetting that the men don't get anything like the abuse women get for coming out as GC so perhaps he'll go for it - think he retweeted Lily Maynard a while back and got shit for that so perhaps had a taste of what to expect.

CaptainCorrigan · 22/09/2018 15:43

It's funny because it's like when soap stars get hit with handbags by people in the street because they play villains. It takes a special kind of stupid to not be able to seperate TV and reality, and not only that but not actually bother checking who has written the script

Bowlofbabelfish · 22/09/2018 17:05

There were people saying Sam Rockwell shouldn’t have got the Oscar for Three Billboards because his character was an asshole 🤦🏻‍♀️

the telly isn’t real, people...

Juells · 22/09/2018 17:07

because his character was an asshole

Gosh, I thought his character was brilliant - he looked like he was going to be a stock villain, then turns it all around towards the end.

Juells · 22/09/2018 17:09

misses bowlofbabelfish's point
