Correcting a Blindspot: I dont know if am allowed to do this on Mumsnet

So on Wednesday night we had a get together with a bunch of women in Leeds, and I think it went well but we have decided that because Womans Place are touring, We need to Talk are mobile, we also need a solid base where roots can form and women can talk openly. We are going to repeat the event monthly in Leeds, the next events we will actually livestream because it wont be me who manages the IT(am inept) but I wanted to let you know we were going to do it that way if you wanted to come. I dont know if Mumsnet will allow this, am not sure of the rules or if it counts as advertising. I dont make money off it so its not commercial.

That's great news, Lisa.

(Advertising meet ups is fine: it's just fundraising links that aren't allowed.)

LeiaTheSlaya · 03/08/2018 16:44

Sounds great - would be interesting to see if we can get this stuff replicated in other areas. 👍

lisamuggeridge · 03/08/2018 16:56

I think thats the key Leia, its this replicating all over. I dont even think it matters what women talk about, we just need to be doing so openly and loudly and without bloody fear.

That's a fantastic idea. I'll definitely come up from London for one of them.

ThinkIveFoundYourMarbles · 03/08/2018 17:05

Is anything like this planned for Northern Ireland?

sexnotgender · 03/08/2018 17:07

Anything planned in Scotland?

MrsWooster · 03/08/2018 17:09

This is great news - I missed this weeks due to a Series of Unfortunate Events - but will really welcome a chance to chat to other women in what passes for real life!

lisamuggeridge · 03/08/2018 17:19

Sexnotgender. No BUT there is organisation up there cos I met a bunch of women with Magdalen Berns when I went to the WNTT meeting in Camden and I had spoken to Venice about putting something on. While this was made complicated by the need to manage security(which is fucking ridiculous) and the stupidity ofnot being able to advertise the venue, outside that it was relatively easy. We ended SLIGHTLY out of pocket cos we ended up having to pay a sound engineer and security but we dont see that'llbe much of a problem in future. We were going to write a 'how to ' put a meeting on, maybe do a video thing. Am quite happy for people to use Correcting a Blindspot name(such as it is), Venice is quite happy to support and I dont know about WPUK but up here the people involved in next months WPUK meeting were also involved with this.

OP posts:
lisamuggeridge · 03/08/2018 17:20

There is no edit function. I hadnt spoken to venice about putting something on, but about writing a guide to putting something on.

Come to Manchester (I had a ticket for Leeds but couldn’t make it)?

LeiaTheSlaya · 03/08/2018 17:26

We were going to write a 'how to ' put a meeting on, maybe do a video thing

That would be brilliant Lisa - it's the cost outlay/facilities/security that baffles me, I'd love a how to/rough costs/cost short cuts guide if at all possible.

Thanks Smile

I dont even think it matters what women talk about, we just need to be doing so openly and loudly and without bloody fear.

This is the main thing, isn't it? We have bloody freedom of assembly and we have the right to talk about whatever the fuck we like sans the supervision of men.

sexnotgender · 03/08/2018 18:11

Thanks lisamuggeridgeSmile

Melamin · 03/08/2018 18:12

Thank you!

Well done OP

And Leeds is such an important place. West Yorkshire Police's inept handling of The Yorkshire Ripper case, Jimmy bloody Savile living in Leeds, cosying up to Peter Sutcliff in prison. Savile being a patron of Leeds Royal Infirmary, abusing patients and having sex with corpses in the morgue.

The Revolutionary Feminists forming and starting up Reclaim The Night.

The sociology department of Leeds University having key pro-prostitution lobbyists on the faculty. West Yorkshire Police's 'trial' prostitution tolerance zone leading to higher incidences of rape. Mermaids training West Yorshire Police. West Yorshire Police taking the trip to Wiltshire to harass Posie Parker as part of a 'test case' to call anything at all 'hate speech'. Emma of Mumsnet's Emmagate being a student of Leeds Uni.

Leeds is a great place to start a weekly meeting. Good on you!

lisamuggeridge · 03/08/2018 20:15

Also the format of the events ids a bit more open mic than top table. We will invite speakers but we really think an environment whree women talk and knowledge build requires that. So thats what we will be doing. Like an open mic, regular event, but a lot less hierarchical and a lot more about bringing knowledge out and up than top tables.

OP posts:
lisamuggeridge · 03/08/2018 20:16

Somewhere you can go to do that, that is linked in with other groups...oh shit...we have a movement..a bonafide one...and not a pretend Corbyn one....lol Marvellous.
