Comments on the article now open on the Guardian site.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 05/07/2018 09:33

Fantastic!
There is no single cure for unhappy girls, but as adults it is up to us to teach our children that one does not need to change one’s body to reject socially imposed gender stereotypes.

Comments seem to be open Shock

Larryduff · 05/07/2018 09:33

Brilliant! Keep pointing out that it's the very people trying to redefine woman/man that are the ones reinforcing the binary that they say doesn't exist. Just get rid of gender expectations and the problem goes away.

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 05/07/2018 09:33

Magpiesarehuge I was the same as you in the 70's, perhaps if we were children now we could transition just one side of our bodies? I was definitely what would be described now as non-binary.

Ballerina Sindy (was yours pink or purple?), Raleigh chopper bike, meccano, remus sewing kits, making guiders (home made go-carts) with my older brother - that was my 70's childhood.

CaptainBrickbeard · 05/07/2018 09:45

I love this article: it perfectly encapsulates my worries about the prevalence of trans issues at the moment, that instead of breaking down restrictive gender boundaries it in fact reinforces them. I don’t see how anyone could argue with what Hadley writes in this article.

Catsrus · 05/07/2018 09:59

Well done Hadley!

I was GNC in the 60's - a Tom boy - my Dd declared herself a boy pre teens. Changed her name etc. She grew out of it once she realised we, as a family, thought sexist stereotypes stupid and she could climb trees if she wanted ... she's a happily female adult - oh and straight too, as I am.

Halfeatentoast · 05/07/2018 10:08

This is fantastic!

LangCleg · 05/07/2018 10:09

Moon hopper Olympics in the garden, using bamboo poles and flower pots! Unisex! (I was shit.)

Bowlofbabelfish · 05/07/2018 10:13

Comments seem fairly sensible so far too.

AngryAttackKittens · 05/07/2018 10:21

Hadley has always been a good writer, and has been sticking her head over the parapet for a while now. Couldn't be happier to see this. I wonder if she ever runs into LOJ in the break room, and if so if he attempts to argue with her or just glowers.

Tackytriceratops · 05/07/2018 10:30

Bloody hell, well done Hadley!

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 05/07/2018 10:38

The comments so far are very gender critical. And it's interesting that the Guardian has actually opened them.

In the same way the Guardian demonised Corbyn until, close to the election, they realised he had a lot of public support then they did a quick u-turn, they are beginning to see the light on this issue too?

I think the YouGov poll has played a significant role in showing that despite claims by some factions that most people support self- ID, this is not actually the case.

AngryAttackKittens · 05/07/2018 10:41

I agree, the poll may well have shattered some assumptions in the media set.

Lottapianos · 05/07/2018 10:45

I have emailed her to say a big thank you, and to make her aware of debate being shut down on this site this week.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/07/2018 10:45

Comments, oh my Shock

WichBitchHarpyTerfThatsMe · 05/07/2018 10:46

Does anyone know how YouGov work? Do they choose poll subjects independently or do they get commissioned? I'm just wondering who decided to do this poll and why. If it came from a transcultist organisation it really has backfired on them.

SecondRow · 05/07/2018 10:53

Yay, Hadley.

Yet again would love to be a fly on the wall when the turning tide is discussed in Guardian Towers Grin

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/07/2018 10:59

One of the comments accuses her of being 'phobic'. Which, considering how benign the article is, looks deranged.
The TRA attempt to get everything feminist to be seen as dogwhistle transphobia is utterly backfiring.

MotherofPearl · 05/07/2018 11:05

Yes Countess, that's why I think it may read to some PP like she's holding back. She probably is, but by writing such a sane, measured and innocuous article, it makes those who start screeching 'phobic' look ridiculous and frankly unhinged - so: job done!

woman11017 · 05/07/2018 11:10

Novelist Linda Grant's speaking out too, following the Freeman article:

@lindasgrant
I’ve tried to keep shtum on the trans debate but this clearly sets out the issues that feminists have with the new orthodoxy.

Procrastinator1 · 05/07/2018 11:14

On the other hand, this was in the Guardian yesterday.
www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/jul/04/homophobia-lgbt-cure-conversation
Mention of the increase in DV during football but no follow through on the effect of that violence on women, the two deaths a week...…...

mimivanne · 05/07/2018 11:28

Will do,thanks Wich

woman11017 · 05/07/2018 11:29

DV facts aren't allowed either, I notice Procrastinator1.

arranfan · 05/07/2018 11:32

Hadley F's article was probably heavily edited and sub-edited - it's probably not unreasonable to suppose that many very clear phrases and expressions did not make it into print as written.

gendercritter · 05/07/2018 12:02

Thank you so much Hadley.

Some of my quite significant anxieties about this issues alleviate when I see something like this being published.
