Honestly, is this any different to girls wanting to wear trousers when it is very cold? To say you can't wear x or y because you're a boy or girl seems regressive and plays into the gender stereotyping. He isn't pretending to be a girl, he is making what he sees as a practical choice girls have.

I think that boys and girls should be allowed trousers or skirts.

He's wearing a jumper or sweatshirt in the pic so I wonder how hot it is?

spontaneousgiventime · 20/06/2018 16:40

Good for him. Why should a boy not wear a skirt?

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 20/06/2018 16:42

He looks good in that skirt.
Totally owns it!

BettyDuMonde · 20/06/2018 16:43

Good for him!

I look forward to the day when this happens and it doesn’t make the news.

AhWeCanDanceIfWeWantTo · 20/06/2018 16:44

Not allowing shorts is ridiculous!!

Interesting that he is an army cadet. He should be well used to following uniform rules.

Mossandclover · 20/06/2018 16:44

This comes up most years in schools where they disallow shorts.

Potato25 · 20/06/2018 16:45

"When I asked why I couldn't wear a skirt to school, they said it was because I am a boy and can't wear a skirt," he said.
"Personally I identify as a male but I have a few trans friends. How dare they bracket me into a certain category because I look like a boy."

Why does he have to bring trans into it? Can't he just wear a skirt because he wants equality between the sexes?

scotsheather · 20/06/2018 16:46

True but kind of beside the point. Eldest DD wears trousers in the height of Summer, younger wears skirts in snow, wind and rain.

Definitely cooler

PinkAvocado · 20/06/2018 16:48

What annoys me most about these situations is that adults believe they know hot the pupils are better than they do. If shorts are allowed when the Head seems it hot enough then they’re already an item of uniform. Such a power trip.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/06/2018 16:51

The Times had a piece about a load of builders who donned skirts or dresses when they weren't allowed shorts in the recent hot weather. Good for them - get rid of arbitrary gendered rules re clothing.

Dragoncake · 20/06/2018 17:01

Skirts are comfortable in hot weather. Seems like a practical alternative to shorts.

llangennith · 20/06/2018 17:48

I hope by next summer all schools will allow any pupil to wear school shorts to school in hot weather. Not just when the HT decides it’s hot but as an option. All the primary schools round here allow girls to wear school shorts as an alternative to dresses or skirts so they can do the gymnastic things girls do without worrying about showing their knickers.

LassWiADelicateAir · 20/06/2018 18:27

It amuses me to see posters praising skirts and dresses as practical and sensible when men wear them.

HerRoyalNotness · 20/06/2018 18:34

Those builders loook hardcase Grin

But, whenever I’ve worked on a construction site it’s long sleeves and trousers across the board. Site office workers, cleaners, brickies, everyone. And in temps a lot hotter than 26c.

AhWeCanDanceIfWeWantTo · 20/06/2018 18:38

It’s funny that, isn’t it lass?

ErrolTheDragon · 20/06/2018 18:43

Why?Confusedthey are, for many purposes and especially in summer. Just as trousers are practical and sensible for many purposes and especially in cold weather. Men in many cultures find 'skirts' perfectly appropriate (and no, I'm not particularly thinking of kilts).
I more or less switch with the seasons, as do many women nowadays - it'd be nice for men not to be constrained by arbitrary clothing rules in this country too.

MarklahMarklah · 20/06/2018 18:43

Good for him.
I understand that a school may wish to have a uniform but to start dictating who should wear which particular garment within that seems to me a step too far.
My secondary school did not permit trousers for girls, and we only ever did cross-country running in the winter. In short skirts and aertex blouses. Utterly ridiculous.

AssassinatedBeauty · 20/06/2018 18:46

What is so stupid is that the uniform should be available to all, and should include items like tailored shorts for those that want to wear them. I would also leave it up to the students to decide if it's hot enough for shorts. Especially in sixth form, where a simple dress code would be sufficient.

NotTakenUsername · 20/06/2018 18:48

He is probably out the house from 0800-1600 or more. A cool morning can move on to be a scorcher in the midday sun.

SeahorsesAREhorses · 20/06/2018 18:48

Hmmm, if he was attacked would the fact he is wearing a short skirt be to blame? Probably not eh, 'cos reasons.

Boys in skirts are great, it's just a piece of cloth. Let both sexes wear what they like, so long as it's uniform.

Amalfimamma · 20/06/2018 18:49

Good for him. Even though he'll now be championed as a poster boy for the tra brigade.

Tbh I'm very surprised they haven't tried to trans Braveheart and every Scottish man who's ever wore a kilt

Loopytiles · 20/06/2018 18:49

I liked the construction workers in dresses and skirts too, but it seems likely the employer will just change its policy and require women to wear trousers!

Boys and men, and girls and women, should be able to wear whichever, except for health and safety considerations.

NotTakenUsername · 20/06/2018 18:49

Yuck I hate them - clammy thighs!

BertrandRussell · 20/06/2018 18:53

I hope he's wearing shorts under it in case he does a cartwheel.....
