Honestly, is this any different to girls wanting to wear trousers when it is very cold? To say you can't wear x or y because you're a boy or girl seems regressive and plays into the gender stereotyping. He isn't pretending to be a girl, he is making what he sees as a practical choice girls have.

Let girls and boys wear skirts or shorts as they see fit. Problem.solved

If it's uniform he should be able to wear it. Why are girls allowed to wear something so inferior a boy gets sent home in it.

All uniform open to all. Easy.

Fabricwitch · 20/06/2018 18:59

You are right. Boys and girls should be able to wear what they like, and this idea that only girls wear skirts/dresses makes boys who like them think they have to transition into women.

AhWeCanDanceIfWeWantTo · 20/06/2018 19:03

I hope he's wearing shorts under it in case he does a cartwheel.....

Indeed. I wonder are shorts permitted underneath skirts, if they aren’t permitted on their own.

thats seems a common mantra, probably transgender trend among them. Children can cross arbitary gender boundaries without doing unnatural things to their body.

I doubt he's trying to make any feminist point. I suspect he's being a typical teen and thinks this is a marvellous way to push his teachers' buttons.

Having said that, I agree that it's ridiculous kids can't wear shorts when it's hot.

loveyouradvice · 20/06/2018 19:38

He looks fab! If only this starts becoming more commonplace....

BertrandRussell · 20/06/2018 19:44

He doesn't look fab or not fab. He looks like a boy in a skirt. I have no problems with boys wearing skirts if they want to, but if he wants to fight for equality I can point him in a few more constructive directions. They might not be quite so media friendly though....

TransplantsArePlants · 20/06/2018 19:49

Bertrand

Yes, I hope he's fighting for equality for girls too.

ReadingRiot · 20/06/2018 19:58

Whilst it's hard to disagree in theory, I take issue with these stories because:

-they all seem more about seeking attention than the actual issue
-if you're genuinely concerned about discrimination there are bigger issues
-skirts are horrible to wear if it's very hot, a bit of fabric between the thighs is far preferable!

This particular boy seems particularly misguided in the argument that he needs to be allowed to wear a skirt because he might be transgender, so he's not asking for male/female equality at all.

LassWiADelicateAir · 20/06/2018 20:04

He looks fab!

No he doesn't. This just another example of the skewed ideas some posters have about clothes. An article of clothing which is frequently lambasted on FWR as impractical or stupid (apparently it is impossible to ride a bicycle wearing a skirt) becomes transformed when worn by a boy.

AssassinatedBeauty · 20/06/2018 20:17

Lass, you do know it's different people posting different opinions? You're talking as if there's some kind of unified response from "feminist chat".

TakeawayTakeMeAway · 20/06/2018 20:21

Why does he have to bring trans into it? Can't he just wear a skirt because he wants equality between the sexes?

Well I took it to mean that you shouldn’t have to identify as female to wear a skirt; anyone should be allowed to wear one.

Frankly, I wholeheartedly agree and I applaud his stance. It’s just a skirt; if the girls can wear trousers then why can’t the boys wear skirts? No reason other than ridiculously rigid gender roles.

NotTakenUsername · 20/06/2018 20:25

I doubt he's trying to make any feminist point. I suspect he's being a typical teen and thinks this is a marvellous way to push his teachers' buttons.

I think it’s wonderful to see teenagers taking a stand, however clumsily. It gives me hope for the future! And I don’t think this particular chap falls into the ‘kids’ category anymore.

AhWeCanDanceIfWeWantTo · 20/06/2018 20:25

Really though, this story has been happening for at least the last two years. He’s not being original. I’m honestly surprised it made the news.

Iceweasel · 20/06/2018 20:26

If shorts are allowed on hot days when the head says so, then why not allow them for the whole summer term?

NotTakenUsername · 20/06/2018 20:27

Well, the suffragettes used methods more than once - originality doesn’t necessarily equal effectiveness. Sometimes it’s persistence that gets the job done.

AhWeCanDanceIfWeWantTo · 20/06/2018 20:27

Personal opinion is that skirts should be gotten rid of altogether in school uniforms. Trousers and shorts are fine for everyone, no silliness over rolling them up, length, seeing knickers etc.

TransplantsArePlants · 20/06/2018 20:27

It made the news because he mentioned his trans friends

AhWeCanDanceIfWeWantTo · 20/06/2018 20:29

Ahh of course! (love the name btw trans)

TransplantsArePlants · 20/06/2018 20:30

Thank you

Guinea Pigs are pigs by the way

BertrandRussell · 20/06/2018 20:31

I absolutely disagree with getting rid of skirts. Taking away girl's choices is such a bad idea. Extending them to boys is fine.

TransplantsArePlants · 20/06/2018 20:32

I agree Bertrand

AhWeCanDanceIfWeWantTo · 20/06/2018 20:38

I just don’t see the need for skirts as uniform other than as an indication that schools are still clinging into antiquated notions that women should wear skirts. They are impractical. Trousers or shorts for everyone. I know I’m alone in this BTW Grin I don’t expect anyone to agree.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 20/06/2018 20:38

I think there is a growing group of teens who resent gender stereotyping, it's almost like a backlash after a childhood of blue-for-boys, pink-is-for-girls, gender based toys etc.

My teens want nothing to do with sexism/gender stereotypes

Ds (13) went to school this week with glittery pink nail varnish on his finger nails. He was asked if he was gay by some kids but mostly nobody cared.

I really think it's not just him, or the boy in the skirt in OP, it's today's young people pushing back against enforced gender stereotypes.

Or maybe I am reading too much into it Grin that is also quite possible

I agree. A local school has had to use a single supplier for skirts with a logo so the hem cannot be taken up. Then to be fair, they have done the same with the trousers, even though they were never the problem.
