Are you inadvertently being transphobic? Find out here

A lot of Twitter transactivists think Mumsnet is transphobic. Every time women ask for a definition of transphobic, they get blocked, so you may be confused as to whether you're transphobic or not. So I thought I'd be helpful and give you a few examples of what you must not believe, if you don't want to be a transphobe.

If you believe any of the following, you are transphobic:

  • Female mammals gestate their young in their wombs. This includes human mammals.
  • Only females menstruate.
  • A penis is a male organ
  • A vagina is a female organ
  • You can find out whether your baby will be a girl or a boy by going for a scan
  • The duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a baby boy.
  • Gay men have male bodies and want to sleep with other men with male bodies
  • Lesbians have female bodies and want to sleep with people with female bodies
  • A woman is an adult human female. A female in this context, means of or denoting the sex that can bear offspring or produce eggs, distinguished biologically by the production of gametes (ova) which can be fertilized by male gametes
  • A man is an adult human male. Male in this context means of or denoting the sex that produces gametes, especially spermatozoa, with which a female may be fertilized or inseminated to produce offspring.

These are just some of the basic things you need to stop believing if you want to ensure you don't engage in wrongthink. I hope this is helpful and will guide you in ensuring that you learn to think correctly and stop being a terrible bigot.

Thanks AskBasil, I'll try to correct my thinking.

Devilishpyjamas · 03/05/2018 09:22

These TRA are so damaging for those who are non-binary who just want to quietly get on with their lives.

I mean that whole list is bonkers (& yep I have see some of those used) so any sensible message about transphobia gets lost.

MadCap · 03/05/2018 09:24

You forgot to add breathing while female.

AskBasil · 03/05/2018 09:27

Using the word female may be considered transphobic in certain contexts MadCap, careful now.

Just call me Aunt Lydia

Grin

I'm here to correct any wrong thoughts. And to offer advice about how to think correctly.

Another one: Discriminating about who you sleep with on the grounds of what you say their sex is, is transphobic. If you're a straight woman and you want to sleep with a man with a penis, you are discriminating against men with vaginas and you are in fact, a penis fetishist and regrettably, a transphobe. Sort it out.

KittyKlaws · 03/05/2018 09:35

Having a female body and talking about it - also deemed exclusionary

ReluctantCamper · 03/05/2018 09:37

Gotcha.

MaterialReality · 03/05/2018 09:47

Excellent list! From conversations on Twitter, I'd add:

  • You can tell whether a person is male or female by looking at them and don't have to ask first.
  • It's sexist to say that some toys and activities are for boys and others are for girls.

You might also want to examine your conscience very closely and turn yourself in if you happen to be a Secret TERF.

AngryAttackKittens · 03/05/2018 09:50

Are you female? Do you not hate yourself for it?

Bigot.

GruffaloPants · 03/05/2018 09:50

Thanks Basil. Very helpful. Will try to assimilate.

Not sure about the word "aunt" though. Very exclusionary. How about a new gender neutral word. Uncunt perhaps?

GruffaloPants · 03/05/2018 09:51

Material - isn't it sexist to say some toys are for boys, others for girls? That's where all this madness starts!

LaSqrrl · 03/05/2018 09:53

Unimpressed by the Almighty LadyPeenâ„¢ whilst living as lesbian?
Bigot.

AngryAttackKittens · 03/05/2018 09:55

OK with some peens, but not the particular one that's demanding your attention at this very moment? Bigot.

(This one works for regular non-dress-wearing MRAs too)

MaterialReality · 03/05/2018 09:57

Gruffalo - well, I might think it is! But I was adding to the list of transphobic statements. I've had comments deleted on news sites because pointing out that a little boy who likes dolls and dresses would be fine if his parents weren't so attached to rigid gender stereotypes and let him get on with it. That doesn't fit the brave little trans girl narrative.

AngryAttackKittens · 03/05/2018 09:59

Oh yeah, there's another one. Butch lesbian who stubbornly insists that no, actually, you're not a man, nor do you want to be? Bigot.

According to whichever group of idiots protested Glasgow Pride a while back drag queens are also transphobic.

R0wantrees · 03/05/2018 10:02

Can I add 'not calling yourself cis woman'?

AskAuntLydia · 03/05/2018 16:54

"I think a transwoman with a penis sleeping in the same tent as a girl guide is a safeguarding issue".

That's transphobic.

Don't worry about teenage girls, that just means you're a bigot.

leyat · 03/05/2018 16:57

OP brilliant post :D

PerspicaciaTick · 03/05/2018 17:01

Wanting to go for a wee without having to battle through a scrum of gender-excited students - transphobic.

PermissionToSpeakSir · 03/05/2018 17:03

Some clarity at last!

Thanks basil

I was finding it so hard trying to work out what I am and am not allowed to think.

Hopefully I won't be 'called out' and publicly humiliated for my unforgivable transphobia any more if I can just. manage. to. stop. trusting. my. own. senses. and. memories..

Ooh now this is quite tricky... but I think I am nearly there...

I feel lighter..

I am transformed!

Praise be!

Now all I need to do is spread the word! with force

Elendon · 03/05/2018 17:04

Also remember that towns with the names of Penistone and Scunthorpe are transphobic as well.

As well as women's internal reproductive organs.

tinytemper66 · 03/05/2018 17:06

I couldn`t give a hoot. I have a vagina so I am a WOMAN!

corlan · 03/05/2018 17:08

I knew my O Level in English Lit would come in handy one day. It's Doublethink from George Orwell's '1984'.

"To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies, to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic."

TotallyLibrarianPoo · 03/05/2018 17:09

Apparently losing my bits to endometriosis ( sorry that one pissed me off )[mad]
