Follow on thread regarding the data breach situation:
___

Dear MNHQ

I'm very grateful for the commitment to free speech you've publicly taken, and for Justine's courage this week.

A former disgruntled employee of MN is writing on Twitter about the 'transphobia' of MN staff, and calling you TERFs. She is showing a great deal of bias and intolerance towards women with feminist views, this may well be her honest opinion, which is no big deal I suppose, since she is no longer an employee.

At least, it isn't an issue until she calls a shout out to her
'friends who still work at MN' to report and take down posts by 'transphobic scum', by which she appears to be referring to any poster objecting to being called TERF by her friend.

Regardless of the personal views of the MNHQ staff, who should be as free to hold their own views as I am mine, I am disturbed that there may be a small contingent of employees who are invested in unfair moderation and will not be applying fair-handed principles, at least if the claims of this ex-employee are credible.

Can you please give posters some reassurance that the difficult job of fair-handed moderation isn't being abused by the 'friends' of ex-employees who are 'reporting it all' and taking down posts because any gender criticism means the poster is 'transphobic scum'?

Thank you.

To be clear, tarring and feathering Emma is not the goal here, at least not for me. She's already ensured that when future potential employers google her she's going to lose out on a lot of jobs. The goal is to plug the leak so this can't happen again.

thebewilderness · 19/04/2018 02:00

It was clearly stated in the previous thread that staff access to information on users was restricted last month.

And the more seriously it’s taken, the more likely she is to take it seriously and delete the r st of what she has. Always assuming she hasn’t already shared it.

Just catching up with the day's events here.
I hope a simple apology from the gender zealot is not considered sufficient. This is a serious breach of user data. If I didn't value this space so highly, I would probably leave. But it is important for us to be able to discuss these issues, so I won't be going anywhere.

@weebo about 3 years ago, so things could have conceivably changed by now regarding staff access privileges

flowersonthepiano · 19/04/2018 02:08

Cross-posted with battleaxe. Off to sleep now

AngryAttackKittens · 19/04/2018 02:09

Exactly. Didn't realize this could create problems for you, Emma? Well, now you do, so be smart and don't damage your own professional reputation any further.

DarthArts · 19/04/2018 02:10

Upshot is Emma made a call.

Her current and future employers can make decisions on whether she's a trustworthy employee.

Battleax · 19/04/2018 02:13

That’s the upshot of that aspect.

But I’m still poised ready to dereg. I want to know that my data is going to better protected in future.

Weebo · 19/04/2018 02:15

I think it may be important to note that there are TRA's on social media right now scoffing about how funny it is that MN feminists are turning on Justine/HQ because of this.

I really advise a healthy amount of scepticism when it comes to any posts regarding the inner workings of HQ.

I'm not saying Johnny is lying - I have no fecking clue - but even if they aren't let's not turn the one place we have to speak into a shite flinging match.

AngryAttackKittens · 19/04/2018 02:15

Whatever professional consequences there are for Emma will be partly a result of TRAs preaching the idea that the ends always justify the means when "fighting transphobia", and nothing that's done to a "TERF" can ever get you in trouble because society will understand.

Tell that to the ICO, see how well it goes.

Battleax · 19/04/2018 02:16

And it would also be nice to hear some acknowledgment from MNHQ that other TRAs are likely to be making deliberately efforts to be hired by MN specifically.

Battleax · 19/04/2018 02:20

If they’re laughing, they’re daft.

  1. We’re having the completely standard MN “bracing exchange of views” with Justine that happens at least twice a year.

  2. Their infiltrating sympathiser cocked her own efforts up rather magnificently. (Although I suppose maybe they don’t care that she’s marred her career OR that she could have been more efficient in her TRA doings).

HelenaDove · 19/04/2018 02:22

Bloody hell Ive only just seen this.

AngryAttackKittens · 19/04/2018 02:23

Like I said earlier, the goals are - figure out how this happened, figure out how to stop it happening again, report the data breach to the ICO.

I know that TRAs are pretty much the least professional group of people in the universe so the adult approach most people here are taking must be confusing for them.

Weebo · 19/04/2018 02:25

Christ, I'm sure she's thankful for all the gin sent to HQ now. :o

OlennasWimple · 19/04/2018 02:28

I know that MNHQ will never say so, but I hope they know who the "friends who have reported this" (from the original tweet up in the OP) are, and have ensured that they understand the legal obligations on them to use data appropriately

ICJump · 19/04/2018 02:28

I totally agree Angrykitten. I don’t want some kangaroo court style thing. But a private apology isn’t really suitable if MN aren’t going to pursue it further. If MN do take it further then that’s what happens but if it’s only dealt with in-house a private apology isn’t really ok.

OlennasWimple · 19/04/2018 02:28

And yeah, let's not let this descend into either a hate fest for EH, or a slanging match with Justine / MNHQ.

Battleax · 19/04/2018 02:32

It won’t.

Mamaryllis · 19/04/2018 02:33

Can anyone send me a twitter link? I can see people chatting, but just curious if mine was flashed round the world again and can’t find the actual data. Ta...

Weebo · 19/04/2018 02:38

I've PMed it to you Mama.

It's obviously out there but I don't want to splash it around.

Mamaryllis · 19/04/2018 02:59

Thanks weebo- link doesn’t work as it says thread has been deleted by twitter, but I will assume I’m not on it. Mnhq emailed me last time Grin and I don’t appear to have any emails or other dms.
Thanks for trying!
