Pretty standard stuff . Promote the interests of males and ignore women who say no.

That's official NUS stuff? Scary. I notice also it specifically mentions transwomen a couple of times but not transmen.

SuburbanRhonda · 14/04/2018 09:02

So many typos I can’t take it seriously.

SuburbanRhonda · 14/04/2018 09:05

Also LM has re-tweeted it - tells you all you need to know really.

NotTerfNorCis · 14/04/2018 09:17

Let's hope they do get familiar with 'TERF' arguments. It may change some minds.

flowersonthepiano · 14/04/2018 09:18

OMFG! They actually believe that there are not two sexes. Do all those politicians supporting the cause and waving their liberal credentials about actually know what they are supporting here. Angry

WeAreGerbil · 14/04/2018 09:20

It makes me think we need to subvert their message, e.g. instead of how to deal with TERFs how to deal with women who have been raped and want safe space, or how to deal with teenage school girls who already experience high levels of sexual harassment who want privacy changing, or how to deal with mental health patients with psychosis who are being told a man is a woman. Just calling us TERFs hides all these things.

flowersonthepiano · 14/04/2018 09:27

" Work with transsexuals, and studies of formation of gender identity in children provide basic information which challenges the notion that there are two discrete biological sexes. That information threatens to transform the traditional biology of sex difference into the radical biology of sex similarity… Every transsexual is entitled to a sex-change operation, and it should be provided by the community as one of its functions." Andrea Dworkin (this person has a lot to answer for).

WeAreGerbil
You're right. We need to emphasize the boundaries issue. The girl guides campaign is really good for this.

MissPiggysKarateChop · 14/04/2018 09:29

“We are what we always were in Salem, but now the little crazy children are jangling the keys of the kingdom, and common vengeance writes the law!”
― Arthur Miller, The Crucible

HerFemaleness · 14/04/2018 09:34

I see that sex based oppression is an idea we created just to invalidate trans people. Who knew!

AngryAttackKittens · 14/04/2018 09:36

Biological sex itself is something that was invented just to hurt trans people's feelings, apparently.

ElenOfTheWays · 14/04/2018 10:01

Well I know I did. What else is it for? Grin

PencilsInSpace · 14/04/2018 10:31

Idea of ‘sex-based oppression’ with scare quotes. Marvellous stuff Hmm

I don't think Dworkin has a lot to answer for. She died 13 years ago and the quote is 44 years old. Things change.

Simone de Beauvoir also doesn't have a lot to answer for, for writing 'One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman' almost 70 years ago.

Both are used completely out of context as a kind of 'gotcha' by people with an agenda who have rarely read any further than their cherry-picked quote.

AngryAttackKittens · 14/04/2018 10:49

It's been a while since I read The Second Sex, but I'm fairly sure that by "becomes a woman" she didn't mean "by completing a course of electrolysis and purchasing hair extensions and breast implants".

AnitaLovesVictor · 14/04/2018 10:56

So true - I've seen Dworkin and de Beauvoir used to prop up the trans ideology, but taken completely out of context. They must be turning in their graves.

flowersonthepiano · 14/04/2018 11:13

Comment re Dworkin withdrawn. Showing my lack of feminist education there.

PencilsInSpace · 14/04/2018 12:16

It's a good opportunity to post this link where you can download the entire works of Andrea Dworkin for free Smile

Also Sheila Jeffreys Unpacking Queer Politics which I've found incredibly helpful for understanding how we got here.

AngryAttackKittens · 14/04/2018 12:18

Sheila Jeffries, who Venus Allan recruited to the cult of radfem! If anyone still has a link to that post with the TRA who seemed a bit confused about the history of radical feminism please post it again here, it was hilarious.

SecretTerf · 14/04/2018 12:32

That post is just.... utterly bonkers.

And even setting aside the complete ignorance of history, I find myself utterly incredulous at all the assertions that radfems are ‘dangerous’ or ‘violent’ or ‘fascist’. All radfems have ever done is campaign AGAINST violence.

I was pretty heavily involved in ththe gay rights movement, oh, about ten years ago. While we campaigned against homophobes and often had a good laugh at their expense, we somehow managed to do so without this kind of rhetoric. Why is it that radfems are being painted this way? (No need to answer that, it’s obvious)

Ereshkigal · 14/04/2018 12:36

It's because they are intent on framing "violence" as non acceptance of a person's self identity.

flowersonthepiano · 14/04/2018 12:40

Gosh pencils that lot will keep me busy Shock How will I find time to post ill-informed nonsense on Mumsnet? Perhaps I should stick to biology where I do know what i'm talking about. Seriously though, I would love to read those and will try to fit some in. Thanks for the link Smile
