Interesting article. Also slightly touches on #ManFriday

if multiple oppressed people are saying you’re upsetting them with your attitude, have you ever considered that you aren’t some outspoken minority, you’re punching down in the most despicable way?

*oppressed people here = white men, obvs. Yes, we're punching down to them. As always.

And "decorum and patience" here = "not issuing rape and death threats". As if this is some impossibly high standard of etiquette we're holding people to.

The article firmly re-conflates LGB with T, because there is a move by some commentators to separate the issues, and that makes the transactivists nervous. Worried about the GRA? Homophobe! Lesbian-hater!

(I note that she says "free reign" Grin)

NoSquirrels · 20/03/2018 20:59

Fuck me that is one wilfully blind article.

But this:

Plus, if you want to get really pernickety about penises and vaginas, there are as many intersex people (born with a variation of reproductive anatomy) as there are ginger people.

Is the stat right? I’m SO curious if it is...

Pratchet · 20/03/2018 21:06

Intersex people have a sex, they are male and female, and the condition has zero to do with being transexual. I can't believe that they're now trying to appropriate people with ginger hair. As in, if you feminism doesn't include women with ginger hair it isn't intersectional?

SunsetBeetch · 20/03/2018 21:31

Intersex people are NOT happy about being dragged into trans debates either.

HairyBallTheorem · 20/03/2018 22:16

a) Intersex people don't want their medical history appropriated by trans whacktivists.

b) You only get to the ridiculous "as common as people with ginger hair" if you include conditions like hypospadias (birth defect of the urethra in males) and PCOS as intersex - which they clearly aren't.

But then we know transwhacktivists aren't terribly good at biology. If they were, they wouldn't utter fatuous nonsense about "lady peens".

I wonder if the TRAs have read this... It's more applicable to them than the 'TERFs' IMO

OlennasWimple · 20/03/2018 23:39

I think this is the same journalist who was on the Nicky Campbell phone in on Radio 5 Live this morning?

BigChocFrenzy · 21/03/2018 05:39

TRA activists display the worst male characteristics of violence and repression towards women,

of outrage and claiming victimhood, whenever women don't knuckle under to their demands

Coyoacan · 21/03/2018 05:58

Congratulations to the Man Friday women, sheer genius!

As for the other article... "a femme cisgender bisexual woman", I just can't get my head around how self-obsessed some people are.

wildduckhunt · 21/03/2018 07:08

What a gaslighting crock of shit that second article is. Angry

Pratchet · 21/03/2018 07:27

👍👍👍I keep wanting to like posts and follow people. Still getting used to this.

TerfsUp · 21/03/2018 07:40

From the article: "If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck".

Well, if it looks like a man, sounds like a man and acts like a man, then it probably is a man.

TerfsUp · 21/03/2018 07:42

To be fair, wildduckhunt, it's an opinion piece, rather than a piece of journalism.

AntiGrinch · 21/03/2018 08:47

Ok this is going to sound weird and tin hat (and probably is). But as the Cambridge Analytica scandal unfolds - and as we learn more about its part in swinging elections - I have to wonder whether there are parallels with techniques being used by TRAs. I am astonished at how quickly such a special interest has dominated social practice - when change is usually glacial. I feel like there has been a whole step missed out.

Usually you get something like:

Hated outliers with small pockets of sympathy in trendy circles
Small pockets of sympathy become larger and less exclusively trendy
Society at large comes to know and understand once niche group
Mainstream opinion supports once-hated group
Law changes to protect them

I feel like now we've gone from

Hated outliers with small pockets of sympathy

to

Mainstream opinion supports once-hated group

and soon

Law changes to protect them

Without going through the understanding bit that used to take decades

She's been picked up for it on Twitter.

Antigrinch, I'd not thought of that before but that's a really interesting point of view.

OvaHere · 21/03/2018 09:04

I've thought the same Grinch after reading an article about someone in the US election who ran 50 or more twitter accounts to campaign with and back up their own views. I did wonder how many of the TWAW accounts are bots or at least accounts that are controlled by a smaller number of people than appears.

rowdywoman1 · 21/03/2018 09:10

Antigrinch
I agree. They've operated 'in plain sight' for some years but instead of operating as social justice movements have to, they're (mainly) wealthy middle aged white men with immediate access to power, funding and the powerful. So they;

Established pressure groups to lobby but called them charities
Using charities to lobby parliament about changing the law
Apply for funding from everyone
Got funding from everyone
Provide training for everyone - the NHS, education , the law civil service, police etc
Use civil service, the law, police to introduce and enforce their specific world view (and introduce sanctions for not complying)
Special focus on education - universities and schools - to ensure that the children / next generation are believers and compliant
Developed special language including 'transphobia' - definition which will include anything and everything and enable total silencing of anyone who suggests that there are problems.

Such careful positioning of a regressive and intolerant ideology as 'vulnerable, discriminated and needy'. Also see Redtoothbrush informative posts about cults.

Just imagine the good that could have been achieved using these tactics about something like violence against women. But of course, women would never have been granted that level of access to power and funding.

I had the same thought. There was something on the Trump thread recently where an interviewer or journalist commented that Bannon was the only man they’d come across who had a really nuanced grasp of intersectional feminism, which I thought interesting given how intersectionalism has been weaponised by TRAs to push back women’s rights.

Mouthtrousersafrocknowandthen · 21/03/2018 19:17

It's been there in the background for some time, I don't think its rapid. The 2010 Equality act crystallised it. Since then the consequences have become more and more public catching more and more peoples attention.

We are pushing back against only a few people, the hearts and minds to win however are the grass roots, the parents whose children are now dealing with the consent problems, ALL girls are experiencing this for a tiny number of special case boys.....the people ramming that home are middle aged men TIMS. Cross dressers.
