But I agree that it is striking how much of the more extreme side of trans twitter involves anime avatars. Something to do with a liking for roleplaying/gaming/cosplay which involves taking on the role of something/someone completely different? Or just nerdishness and a total disconnect from real life?

Many TRAs were originally "ordinary" male nerds spending too much time on forums and image boards such as 4chan which are full of porn and hentai. There is a lot of peadophilia in those type of communities, they love little anime girls.
