A tweet from Sophie Walker today - maybe she's beginning to listen to the strength of feeling amongst women?

A flicker of hope regarding WEP and Trans issues?
OP posts:
QueenLaBeefah · 10/03/2018 13:11

I wouldn't hold your breath with WEP.

YTho · 10/03/2018 13:16

Where does toksvig stand on this issue?

SweetGrapes · 10/03/2018 13:16

Hmmm... I'm listening. Would love it if she is BUT she needs to be braver if she is. I didn't see anything in her manifesto.

Triliteration · 10/03/2018 13:18

Presumably, unlike the Labour Party, the mass leaving of gender critical members has had a significant impact on their numbers. I can’t imagine a full turnaround. It will be interesting to see whether her next plan will be an attempt to appease everyone and whether, if she does that, she will find herself booted out of office, no matter how integral she might appear.

PlectrumElectrum · 10/03/2018 13:19

They've missed the boat entirely on this. Too late to try & claw back credibility with mealy mouthed vague platitudes. As a fine woman recently said "shit, or get off the pot".

MIngerDynasty · 10/03/2018 13:26

"Be proud" of what? of you lady feelings? Hmm

Dunno about Toksvig she hasn't really said too much kind of avoided the conversation. I know full well she wouldn't countenance a lesbian with a penis herself though

MacaroonMama · 10/03/2018 13:35

The original tweet from Ophelia Brown is unbefrickinglievable! What else is being a woman if not that?!

And I bloody well will celebrate my uterus as it held my three babies, and celebrate my boobs as they fed said babies! The insouciance...

MacaroonMama · 10/03/2018 13:36

(I know not everyone's can and Flowers for those wonderful women - I also miscarried a baby and had to mixed-feed a bit, so I am not being smug.)

QuentinSummers · 10/03/2018 13:44

Maybe Sophie has peaked! Gosh I really really hope so....

QuentinSummers · 10/03/2018 13:46

And I would be happy if they changed policy, so many of us started put fully supportive of trans issues before we understood what was going on. I think it's unfair to not allow WEP to change their minds on this.

QueenLaBeefah · 10/03/2018 13:53

Toksvik is probably scared to talk about it or the BBC will give her an official warning.

DonkeySkin · 10/03/2018 13:54

The thing is that there really is no middle ground in this debate.

Either you define woman as an adult human female, or as a metaphysical feeling that anyone can claim.

If the WEP does decide to change direction and go for the former, trans activists, libfems and many leftists will do everything they can to destroy them.

If they persist in using the latter non-definition, they have no reason to exist (I think it was Sarah Ditum who suggested they rename themselves the 'Undefined Group Seeking Equality With Other Undefined Group Party'), and they will be incapable of advancing women's interests.

Either way, they can't avoid a massive split on this issue. Some female politicians who have made tentative noises in opposition to the current trans narrative seem to be under the impression that a compromise can be found that will work for all. It really can't be. This is an existential fight over whether the female half of the human race is to be permitted to exist as a distinct class of persons in law and policy, not a semantic disagreement or a question of balancing rights.

LangCleg · 10/03/2018 13:57

Too little, too late.

FencingFightingTorture35 · 10/03/2018 15:31

That is a pretty TERFy comment. I'm glad she's written if even if it's a small gesture

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 10/03/2018 15:36

Not holding my breath, but more like this please WEP.

rowdywoman1 · 10/03/2018 15:36

Given everything that's happening it's pathetic that we even notice this timid comment.
Bet she'll be in for a drubbing from the activists in her party. If Heather BE can get kicked out for that well known hate speech programme the Moral Maze, then that tweet is literal transphobic violence.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 10/03/2018 15:44

I'm just repeating this because it's so important

Patodp · 10/03/2018 15:54

Oh this is realllly interesting.

I can only assume the party got absolutely hammered by members leaving over the Heather B. Evans fiasco and she's has to shift her position somewhat.

I really like the tweet.
I could get behind a party that accepted both transwomen's identies AND female biology as important. She must have peak transd.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 10/03/2018 16:48

I will join the party and vote for them if they change this. It's not too late to do so. It's not too late to reach out to homeless labour voters.

Come on Sophie, be 'slow' if you must but FUCKING GET THERE.

SusanBunch · 10/03/2018 17:00

Unless Sophie is an imbecile, she must realise that the whole trans thing about men being women is utter and total bollocks. Who knows why she is toeing the line, but I find it hard to believe that she doesn’t get it.

People like Dawn Foster and Laurie Penny on the other hand.... Dawn has an interesting twitter thread going at the moment where she claims that no women except terf nazis have a problem with self ID

hipsterfun · 10/03/2018 17:02

Couldn’t agree more.

While our journeys to terfdom will have been unique to each us, this is surely the final stop.

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 10/03/2018 17:14

I think she's peaked! Hooray. It took long enough.

I do feel for her though. We've all been there and it is a big shift in your world view when the scales fall.

hipsterfun · 10/03/2018 17:34

For me there’s no coming back from the Moral Maze debacle.

hackmum · 10/03/2018 17:50

Sophie was at the Woman's Place meeting last week, wasn't she? Maybe listening to the arguments changed her mind.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 10/03/2018 17:58

If she has changed she is going to need a lot of courage to see this through.
