So I was gently introducing a friend to the issue of self identification, female penises etc. Came on to the women's march and the "not all pussies are pink" tweet.

She agreed. Not all pussies are pink.
I said we're all pink on the inside.
She said no, pussy refers to vulva - hence the pussy hats being vulvas.

Now help me out here. I thought it refers to vagina. Have I got this wrong?!

She then told me that people of all other skin colours apart from white don't have pink vaginas, either.

I'm straight, white and not an HCP so never seen inside other women's vaginas! She's white with DDs from a black father. I am wondering if I've got this wrong too! And I'm so embarrassed I may have!!!!

The on-line definition is “genitals” which are external sex organs only (That is news to me! 44 years old and I’ve always included thought “genitals” included the vagina!)

I assume the labia majora are a person’s natural skin colour and the labia minora are pink, although the only vulvas I’ve seen, apart from my own, belong to my (white) daughters. So, the vulva would have a pink element (labia minora) and a skin-colour element (labia majora) in which case you’d both be right. But we’d need someone who’s seen a range of vulvas to give you a definitive answer!

Yes, pussy hats are pink because pink is the colour of enforced femininity under patriarchy. Nothing to do with skin colour.

That said, there's nothing to stop anyone wearing a brown pussy hat if they feel they'd like to represent the colour of their vulva rather than the flesh colour of their vagina.

This pussy hat derailment pisses me off. It's so obvious that the intention behind it is anti-woman, not standing up for black and brown women.

Perhaps this problems stems from the USA tendency to say Vagina whether they mean vagina or vulva? I get irritated by this. The vagina is specifically the vaginal opening, the canal, the internal muscle while the vulva describes the external genital area, the labia minora and majora, clitoris etc. It’s particularly important because penetration of the vagina in many law systems is what constitutes the crime of rape. While grabbing someone’s vulva would be the crime of sexual assault.

In terms of colour, there’s an excellent art photography project that demonstrates the diversity of colour and form of vulvas. Can’t remember who it’s by but I’m sure google will turn it up. There are definitely a lot of shades of brown in vulvas. Don’t know about vaginas though. Mine is sort of dark red. I’m white.

I think picking on the pussy hats as racist is a bit daft. Why can’t people just knit them in different colours? Wool comes in many shades a bit like people.

The point was to show a sea of a single bright colour to represent a lot of women showing solidarity. If the hats were all brown it would look like a sea of people with brown hair and would not have been effective.

But the real reason they want to stop women wearing them is because women's reproductive systems in their entirety are basically deemed transphobic and therefore you mustn't mention them.

I don't think the colour matters as much as the awareness behind the hats.

I've made a few - some in pink and some in black. The black is more wearable for those who want to make a quieter statement everyday, not just on marches.
