Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

My one person, little act of protest

I find it really scary and sobering that freedom of expression and thought do not apply when it comes to trans-issues. I am particularly frustrated that in rl and in my rl name I cannot voice my views about the subject given the risk of reprisals that doing so could jeopardise my job etc. So, today when asked my name for my coffee cup I chose "Spartacus". It felt slightly more tangible than posting on mn. I will be doing the same whenever asked for my name in this sort of context and hope that any mners with the same concerns will have a little inward smile if they overhear me when I order or see my cup.

I love it. I think it’s a brilliant idea and will def be doing that. I’ve a feeling there’s going to be a lot of confused coffee shop workers, when this gets about.

MrsFogi · 24/01/2018 00:04

The more the merrier Brew Grin

Love it. My little act soon is going tobe to set my students a discussion task on all women shortlists as that should get them discovering

RaininSummer · 24/01/2018 00:12

A few things out which I can't actually say directly. Pressed enter too soon.

sweetpotatosteak · 24/01/2018 05:58

Interesting idea. If loads of people did the same, all on one day, barristas would likely post/tweet talk about it and it might get people reading....

franke · 24/01/2018 06:09

Imagine the scene in Starbucks if we all say we're Spartacus Grin. I like this idea. I was discussing this issue with some young students recently (i'm not in the uk). They were horrified.

SeaWitchly · 24/01/2018 07:38

I love it!
I'm Spartacus too and will give this as my name next time I am in a Starbucks Smile

Glitterypinksoap · 24/01/2018 07:45

If there's a Spartacus day I will go and find a Starbucks on purpose! which around here involves an expedition including pack horses, machetes to clear the paths and probably hiring a professional guide.

QuentinSummers · 24/01/2018 08:44

My little act soon is going tobe to set my students a discussion task on all women shortlists
That is brilliant, thank you

PositivelyPERF · 24/01/2018 11:01

That’s a really good point sweetpotatosteak. It would be like the least secret, Feminist Women’s Secret Society. uses secret handshake, rolls up left trouser leg and hops on right foot, winks 😬

MrsFogi · 24/01/2018 21:17

PPERF - great name, very snappy "The Least Secret Feminist Women's Secret Society" carrying out small guerrilla acts of feminist protest on a daily basis.
Vive LA Revolutionne! (yes sp intentional before I get the pedants piling in Wink)

I have never been to Starbucks, but I'm prepared to for this

MrsFogi · 24/01/2018 21:36

No need to boost Starbucks' coffers redshoeblueshoe you will no doubt find other ways to protest. Smile - do report back Smile.

Awesome idea!

Why do coffee cups have names?

I don't go into many coffee shops!

MrsFogi · 24/01/2018 21:43

Why coffee cups have names in Starbucks I have no idea - makes no sense in the one I visit there is no queue so no chance of a mix up. I'm sure there are other places that ask for names where it is of no consequence to give the wrong one in order to signal membership of The Least Secret Feminist Women's Secret Society (name courtesy of PositivelyPERF Flowers) and speak out in a small way.

If i do this and one of you buggers nicks my latte I won't be happy

Grin
whitehandledkitchenknife · 24/01/2018 22:04

I can't wait to do this. I'm a regular at a certain motorway service station. They remember my name from one visit to the next. It's going to be fun stopping them from starting my order as I walk in and saying, 'I'm not WHKK anymore.............. I'm Spartacus'Grin

redshoeblueshoe · 24/01/2018 22:31

MrsF well that's my mission for tomorrow

PositivelyPERF · 25/01/2018 10:50

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 😆 I’m just picturing a rush of women up to the counter when Spartacus is called. We won’t know if we should fight for the coffee or just have a group hug.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 25/01/2018 11:43

positively

And poor Spartacus the italian exhange student wont have a clue whats going on

Waspnest · 25/01/2018 11:58

Love this as an idea. MrsFogi DH always calls himself Dave at these places because his name can be spelt at least 3 ways and the workers always asked how he spelt it despite him being the only one in the queue with that name.... Worked well until dd piped up 'But Daddy that's not your name'.

dragongirlx · 23/02/2018 14:30

Brilliant idea - alas all the staff in my coffee shop know my name cause I am in their far too much and I bring my own cup
I shall have to think of something else

UpstartCrow · 23/02/2018 14:38

PositivelyPERF I would stand up and announce 'My wife and I are both Spartcus' Grin

I need more of these. I'm going into town tomorrow and will try to leaflet the womens toilet.

BeUpStanding · 23/02/2018 18:00

Can someone link to the Spartacus thread please?! It gets mentioned all the time and I missed it

Great idea though OP
