Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

My one person, little act of protest

I find it really scary and sobering that freedom of expression and thought do not apply when it comes to trans-issues. I am particularly frustrated that in rl and in my rl name I cannot voice my views about the subject given the risk of reprisals that doing so could jeopardise my job etc. So, today when asked my name for my coffee cup I chose "Spartacus". It felt slightly more tangible than posting on mn. I will be doing the same whenever asked for my name in this sort of context and hope that any mners with the same concerns will have a little inward smile if they overhear me when I order or see my cup.

I'd be a little nervous that when they called out 'Spartacus', and I tried to collect my drink, others would stand and say "I'm Spartacus" for a laugh.

Brilliant idea. I am rarely asked my name for an order but I am Spartacus.
I shall be using 2+2=5 on twitters too.

Just did my bit today- we had prospective councillors doorstepping this morning, asking what issues concern residents.
I blurted out that the GRA is my biggest concern ATM, and people gaining access to women's safe spaces!
I think I surprised them tbh, as the issues here are more austerity/local services, NHS etc

I'm going to get "TERF" daubed on my house now, aren't I? Or they'll know not to knock next time Grin

I’ve just asked to join the round table as a self Id male. I have also asked for their policies on this.

Love it.

I crossed out ‘gender’ and wrote ‘sex’ on my HFEA form re storage of embryos etc during IVF.

No one will ever notice, but it made me feel better.

GrainneWail · 28/02/2018 18:36

Ffs, LadyScience, as if ivf could be based on anything other than sex.

LadyScience · 28/02/2018 19:10

I know, Grainne. Maybe my eggs are poor quality because I’m just not feminining hard enough.

Love it. My little act soon is going tobe to set my students a discussion task on all women shortlists

Let me know how it goes. I am too much of a wimp to do stuff like that at the moment, but I would be fascinated to see how it pans out. A couple of my students are trans as well so I have to be really careful. I do talk about feminism and discrimination against the sexed body but not in the context of trans rights- just in terms of explaining the history of women's oppression. I have not been challenged yet, but my students are not always the most awake...
