Because sometimes there’s a chink of cheering sunlight in the darkness.

I purchased this for Dd2s birthday she really liked it.

And the instructions have some information about the women too!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/01/2018 13:36

I got this for DD as well. She was more impressed with the Lego than the fact that they are women (she is 7), but good to normalise it I think.

badbadhusky · 06/01/2018 13:37

I’m going to look them up. From the built kit, I’d say mathematician, computer scientist, technician/engineer and astronaut, so a range of STEM disciplines covered. 👍 I might ask for it for my birthday.

It's actually a pretty good set too (though a bit too white, I'd have liked to have seen the computers from Hidden Figures there but hey).
My DS1 loves it. He also has a scientist set from a few years ago with all female scientists. A palaeontologist, chemist & astrologer if I remember rightly.

moofolk · 07/01/2018 00:21

Although there was supposed to be an Ada Lovelace set made which I'd have been all over.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/01/2018 01:51

It is sitting in front of DD RIGHT NOW thanks to a lovely MNer, who I would love to thank on here if she's OK with that...

IcedCocoa · 07/01/2018 08:01

Really glad to hear this.

DS got the Lego calendar free with purchases, and it has a voucher for Father’s Day. I am a single mother and it is my money being spent. So they need to also get with the times on who might be buying the Lego! (There’s no voucher for Mother’s Day)

Thehairthebod · 07/01/2018 09:17

I'm surprised that given the film came out not that long ago, that one of the characters from Hidden Figures wasn't in there.

Great set though, I might get it for DS!

EBearhug · 08/01/2018 00:10

I'm surprised that given the film came out not that long ago, that one of the characters from Hidden Figures wasn't in there.

That's probably why. The ones which don't have associated film merchandising rights will have been cheaper to make, so bigger profits. There probably aren't enough of them to really exploit as Lego has with Harry Potter and Star Wars. Or maybe I'm just being cynical. Smile

HerRoyalNotness · 08/01/2018 00:20

This place does custom figures and have this set

inspirational woman

Daffydil · 08/01/2018 08:49

moofolk Astronomer. Not astrologer. Not quite the same...

LeCroissant · 08/01/2018 13:30

This set was one of the crowdsourced designs that Lego does every now and again - it was designed by a woman called Maia Weinstock. She gets a small proportion of the profits of the set, so it's a double win - a popular set featuring women, designed by and benefiting a woman!

moofolk · 08/01/2018 15:53

Daffydill hahahaha slight difference but I'm sure any astronomer would be fine with the mixup. Hmm

pisacake · 08/01/2018 16:05

I'm sure any astronomer would be disgusted tbf.

Daffydil · 08/01/2018 17:08

Most astronomers I know (and I know quite a few) would be really quite pissed off.

Hardwickwhite · 08/01/2018 17:11

We got one for DD2 (15) and she absolutely loves it. She's talking about selling all her Harry Potter lego, to make space on her shelf for this set, and her planets.

CannotEvenThink · 08/01/2018 17:23

Dd has both the sets. She has a "women in science" corner of her bedroom consisting of the Lego, her fossil hunter Lottie doll and some feminist books.

Regarding hidden figures etc I think the original idea did want another black woman in there but permission was denied by the woman/ family. I may be wrong but that's what I heard.

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 08/01/2018 17:28

I have both those sets!

LangCleg · 08/01/2018 17:29

CannotEvenThink - if she doesn't have it/know about it already, this is a fantastic book about women in science:

CannotEvenThink · 08/01/2018 17:52

She has it Lang, thank you

SimultaneousEquation · 08/01/2018 17:54

I got this for —me— dd for Christmas Smile

pisacake · 08/01/2018 18:00

if you want a NASA set to go with it, there is

shop.lego.com/en-GB/LEGO-NASA-Apollo-Saturn-V-21309

i believe the missing woman from the women of nasa set is missing because she had licensed merchandising rights to the producer of a film about her or something like that.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katherine_Johnson

moofolk · 08/01/2018 18:21

pisa Yep a licensing issue make sense.
One thing I liked about the scientist set was that it wasn't billed as a 'Women Scientist Lego Set', just as a scientist set which featured only female figures.
Obvs different to the NASA one as they are real people but could do with more of that.
