Live stream (on now) here if anyone is interested:

www.teamusa.org/usa-weightlifting/live

Featuring 9 woman and a man, Laurel Hubbard. He is likely to medal.

This is the no-weight-limit category, hence the biologically female athletes are fairly 'gender-non-conforming' because it's advantageous to be carrying extra fat if you aren't subject to a bodyweight category.

So having a bloke in this category definitely uncool.

What do you mean it’s advantageous to be carrying the extra weight?
Can you lift more the bigger you are?

VivaLeBeaver · 05/12/2017 22:19

The more you weigh the bigger you are, the bigger you are the easier it is to lift weights as part of that increase in size is bigger arms and legs and therefore bigger muscles.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 05/12/2017 22:20

Oh god, of course Blush

Ecuador is just lifting them like cotton buds! What a woman!

Wouldn’t normally watch anything like this but interested to see what the commentators will say.

CecilyNeville · 05/12/2017 22:25

I have never watched weightlifting other than Olympic finals before (and even then not with much enthusiasm) but this is quite compelling. Also interested at how the commentators will fudge around the elephant in the room.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 05/12/2017 22:26

Poor Ecuador, someone has majorly messed that up for her.

pisacake · 05/12/2017 22:30

I think it's not just the extra muscle but also the fat insulates the muscle making it easier to lift or something.

Holley Mangold, US Olympic heavyweight lifter weighed around 400lb when competing.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 05/12/2017 22:38

Starting on 120?

I haven’t become an expert in the last 5 minutes but Jesus Christ.

pisacake · 05/12/2017 22:39

Scorecard here: www.iwf.net/scoreboard/scoreboard3.php

Green numbers are the ones they have asked to be loaded

Blue is successfully lifted.

Red is failed.

It's great to have Laurel showing us how it's done. What a bro pro.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 05/12/2017 22:41

I wonder how the female commentator really feels, given she’s an ex-competitor.

This is awful.

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 05/12/2017 22:42

Oh look. Laurel is wearing pink trainers 🙄

pisacake · 05/12/2017 22:45

Hubbard has lifted 131kg, despite what the commentators say.

I seldom find myself supporting the US in sports, but come on Sarah!!

pisacake · 05/12/2017 22:47

Sarah is determined as fuck. Star

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 05/12/2017 22:48

Wooooooooooo

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 05/12/2017 22:48

I’ve never wished anyone to drop something so hard in my life.

TimbuktuTimbuktu · 05/12/2017 22:49

Laurel is 10 years older than every other competitor.

pisacake · 05/12/2017 22:49

Hubbard's lifting technique is weird. It's like he's scared, like slow-motion.

OP posts:
pisacake · 05/12/2017 22:58

I think that was Hubbard's stronger discipline, so if Robles makes her first clean + jerk (150kg) then it's done, as Hubbard would need to lift 152kg or possibly 153kg, which I don't think he's capable of.

However he seems to be pretty much nailed on for silver, as he's 5kg ahead of the 3rd place athlete.

OP posts:
pisacake · 05/12/2017 23:17

great lift from Mexico, means Hubbard has to start at 144kg. Hopefully he can't lift it.

OP posts:
pisacake · 05/12/2017 23:19

oh, he has a pink hair tie too.

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 05/12/2017 23:20

Laurel just did 145kg I think.
