I really hope Hubbard knocks it out of the park. An easy win.

Nottheduchessofcambridge · 05/12/2017 23:28

This frustrates me as my 16 yo niece is a weight lifter and will possibly be competing against transgender women in the future. I don’t care what they say, being a man with male hormones and genetics is obviously an advantage. Women are being robbed. They need to compete in a different category!

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 05/12/2017 23:28

Go Sarah ! That last lift by her was awesome.

pisacake · 05/12/2017 23:30

So Hubbard can't win, as he's gone for 151kg on last lift, which means Robles is gold medallist.

Harsh on the 20-year-old Thai lifter to be pushed out by a man.

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 05/12/2017 23:34

So did he get silver?

pisacake · 05/12/2017 23:35

So it's

  1. USA
  2. cheating NZ
  3. Egypt
  4. Thailand
OP posts:
pisacake · 05/12/2017 23:36

How shit for that girl to have her medal stolen from her by a man twice her age.

OP posts:
chocdog · 05/12/2017 23:39

It's a mad world.

CecilyNeville · 05/12/2017 23:45

Imagine the atmosphere though, had Hubbard won. The US hasn't had a great lifter for years, and here one is at last, at the World Champs, with a California home crowd. It would have been quite something.

pisacake · 05/12/2017 23:48

The commentator just manages a knowing 'This is the first time we've seen a New Zealand lifter'.

No mention of the fact it's a fucking bloke

OP posts:
pisacake · 05/12/2017 23:56

presumably the commentators would get sacked and called bigots if they even mentioned that Hubbard is a man.

So just smile sweetly.

OP posts:
MrGHardy · 06/12/2017 06:33

A man who achieved nothing as a man places 2nd as a woman at world champs. Yea, TW have no advantage. Riiiiight.

Thermostatpolice · 06/12/2017 07:26

So Hubbard is twice as old as the other competitors - well into middle age - and yet still won silver? The biological advantage is obvious. And unfair.

BlindYeo · 06/12/2017 11:37

This is so wrong. The fourth place competitor has been robbed of a medal.

Is there a way of contacting the team/competitor and saying that is how we see it? Nobody speaks up because they are afraid of being called transphobic and being piled on and yet I'm willing to bet a majority of people think this is a travesty.

ohfortuna · 06/12/2017 12:16

What a fucking joke
we definitely need a trans category for sports

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 06/12/2017 12:31

I disagree sorry.

Suffering from mental health issues or AGP doesn’t warrant a separate category for sport.
You compete as the sex you were born as. If that means you’re not good enough, then welcome to the 99% of the population that aren’t Olympians/world champs/athletes either.

Datun · 06/12/2017 12:45

Asking for a trans category is a tactical thing to do.

In real life it will never happen. Partly because there aren’t enough trans people to go round, but also it will still be biological men competing against other biological men. Which is the exact thing they are trying to get away from.

ohfortuna · 06/12/2017 13:02

Don't get me wrong I agree that ideally you should compete as a sex that you were born with
However given the current fashion for coming out as trans, the way that trans people are lauded for their courage and bravery etc.... Well it just seems to me that arguing for a separate trans category might be a way to stop them competing against women?

Most male weightlifters in my view would also see this as travesty, they are well aware of the strength advantages that men have over women

cromeyellow0 · 06/12/2017 13:14

As far as I know, Laurel has never claimed to be a "transwoman" or to have a lady brain etc. This makes him different from people like Fallon Fox or Hannah Mouncey who do identify themselves as women. He's just blatantly exploiting a loophole to win medals.

PollyBanana · 06/12/2017 13:21

The fact that Laurel came second will be used to support their validity.
"what are you complaining about, there's no advantage, otherwise laurel would have won!"

BlindYeo · 06/12/2017 13:36

Agree Polly. I'd almost rather he'd got gold, then the point would have been better made. He's robbed someone of a medal either way though.

I suspect a particular athlete of using certain defeats as a tactic to deflect criticism. Doesn't always win but pulls it out of the bag for the big events and finals funnily enough.

I just cannot believe sporting bodies are going along with this. They of all people must be aware of the biological differences in strength between males and females.

Datun · 06/12/2017 14:22

cromeyellow0

If Hubbard is not claiming to be a woman in order to enter women’s sports, how has he done it?

I’ve had a brief skim, but can’t find anything where he claims he’s not actually a woman.

Can you remember where you saw that?

Or is that your conclusion because he doesn’t write ream after ream about his ‘journey’.

BlindYeo · 06/12/2017 15:16

www.stuff.co.nz/sport/other-sports/99595478/transgender-weightlifter-laurel-hubbard-avoids-interviews-after-silver-medals

From this article it seems that some coaches at least feel able to say they are not happy.

The fault appears to lie with the International Olympic Committee, whose rules on transgender athletes are followed by the International Weightlifting Federation.
