It is weird isn't it.

Dinosaurs are for boys.
Ponies & horses are for girls.

Insects are for boys, also all superheroes.
Kittens are for girls, and birds. Princesses, instead of superheroes. Also crowns, wands, high heeled shoes, makeup as motifs or patterns.

FaintlyMacabre · 07/02/2015 10:29

Boys: stripes
Girls: spots

SardineQueen · 07/02/2015 10:49

Oooh good one.

When I wonder why that might be I get a big boggled.

TheCowThatLaughs · 07/02/2015 11:11

My ds said he didn't like the daffodils I've bought because flowers are for girls Sad
I'm trying to fight it but it's hard!!

ChoudeBruxelles · 07/02/2015 11:13

Boys

Pirates
Skulls

BertieBotts · 07/02/2015 11:19

Owls and foxes are apparently gender neutral, but insects are split - ladybirds and butterflies are for girls. Spiders, snails and worms are for boys.

Caterpillars are mostly for boys but might be allowed for girls if they are fluffy or smiling.

BertieBotts · 07/02/2015 11:20

The spots and stripes thing is absolutely bizarre.

SardineQueen · 07/02/2015 11:20

Yeah don't think too closely on the spots v stripes is my advice!

BertieBotts · 07/02/2015 11:39

Judging by H&M website I've found some baffling ones.

Girls:
Fruit
Animal prints
Hearts
Bows (not just actual bows but pictures)
Tear drops or raindrops
France (especially Paris)
Birds
Handwriting
Ears on hoods

Boys:
America (Especially cities)
Lizards
Graffiti
Scribbles
Teeth on hoods
Skateboards
Rock Music
American sports
Computer games

thatstoast · 07/02/2015 11:43

Ds is wearing spots now but they are blue spots.

SardineQueen · 07/02/2015 11:44

The blue probably counteracts the spots to some extent.

You might want to keep an eye on him though just in case.

BarbarianMum · 07/02/2015 12:11

Boys
Death
Violence
Trouble
Anything mechanical

Girls
Ladybird and butterflies (ie decorative or helpful insects)

Bees seem to be strangely gender neutral. I guess with a bee it could go either way - could make honey (nice, sweet, helpful) or sting.

BarbarianMum · 07/02/2015 12:13

Oh, forgot (my least favourite)
Boys
Military/fighting

ISolemnlySwearImUptoNoGood · 07/02/2015 12:17

Boys
Monsters
Sea life

Girls
Being spoilt
Cats (h&m doing a full range)

tribpot · 07/02/2015 12:24

Have we not mentioned yet that shopping is for girls? Like at the age of 2 they're going out and making informed purchasing decisions?

Dragons are for boys. And sharks.

Horses are for girls. Although kudos to Lands End for this.

TheFirstOfHerName · 07/02/2015 12:32

Girls get most of the baked goods (especially cupcakes) and ice cream. Only girls are allowed strawberries or cherries.

Boys get a lot of the tech (headphones, games consoles etc), but girls are allowed the occasional mobile phone.

shaska · 07/02/2015 13:49

Stripes/Spots is amazing, never consciously noticed it and now will never not notice.

BugBugBug · 07/02/2015 14:41

Have you seen the LetClothesBeClothes campaign on Facebook? They're campaigning against this.

TiggyD · 07/02/2015 14:49

There seems to be a big change with colours at the moment. Girls are starting to wear blue. Light blue. One child I worked with was talking about colours and referred to the light blue as "Frozen coloured". I'm tending towards thinking that's a good thing. Irritating but good.

MsJupiter · 07/02/2015 15:14

Don't think anyone has said

Boys: cheeky monkey

I try so hard to buy DS neutral stuff but it's getting harder as he gets older.

MsJupiter · 07/02/2015 15:21

Wow the Lands End stuff is really cool. Lots of space stuff for girls. Shouldn't be wow/unusual of course but worth keeping on the radar.

FuckOffGroundhog · 07/02/2015 16:11

I'd love that landsend shirt but would be huge :(

ASDA had "always be pretty" on a girl's shirt last year Confused

DOn't forget that even the Frozen stuff they just have pics of Elsa being pretty and not doing anything.

she is a fucking superhero

Fucking freeze some shit.

FuckOffGroundhog · 07/02/2015 16:14

ooh just noticed they did it in "little girl" size, and they've got lots of other shirts too :)

FuckOffGroundhog · 07/02/2015 16:23

scientists!

girl genius

and this

DINOSAURS!

i am massively impressed

thanks for the tip about Land's End

Disastronaut · 07/02/2015 16:25

Has anyone noticed how from very early on boys and girls clothes as cut differently? Girls' stuff is cut much slimmer to the body, more likely to be clingy, and leggings are mainly made just for girls.

So, our toddler girls are should be showing off their figures, right? In preparation for 'flaunting their curves' in a few years. Hmm
