I suppose its possible that 99% of prostitutes have been abused, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they have been trafficked from abroad. There are plenty British prostitutes who have been abused. Often young girls in care are targetted, just like happened in Rochdale or Oxford.

In fact every man who has sex with a 14 year old for money is committing child abuse. We need to punish these men a lot harder than we currently do.

Yes I have, this government treat those they perceive as being weaker then themselves as scum and/or potential scapegoats. I hate their welfare policies with a passion. Political or no we should always question especially when outlandish statistics go public.

If the "johns" were not prepare to pay for sex then there would be no pimps. I agree with you that the pimps need to be punished as hard the customers. The girls themselves (and families!) need to be protected by the police so that they feel safe to tell the police who the pimps are. It is wrong to criminalise prostitutes who may well be cohersed.

It says "abused and trafficked". There's no point in getting into an and/or argument over a politician' statement. I think it's fair to assume he meant it in the "and/or" sense.

He is giving his opinion, as a politician, about how he feels. I think his 99% is supposed to be taken in the manner it was quite obviously - to me - intended - to mean "a vast majority". He is saying he is shocked by the young ages of the girls, and that people who dismiss concerns by saying it's the oldest profession in the world need to bear in mind factors such as history of abuse, current abuse, coercion, being young and vulnerable and so on. He is not saying he has carried out an extensive scientific study and these are his findings, nor is he saying he has spent a period of time combining peer assessed scientific studies and now he is presenting the results. He is a normal person using standard vernacular to emphasise his point.

If it makes people understand better, try replacing the "99%" with "most" or "many" or "lots" or some other term like that.

You also probably know that most feminists have nothing against women who genuinely choose but are concerned for those who have little or no choice.

Even your scenario of escort vs loo cleaner is lacking in real equal choice. Feminists (in my mind) would rather that woman had genuine access to education, better work prospects, decent wages, and working conditions.

Pimps prey on women and girls who have little economic prospects and / or personal problems of self-esteem/abuse/addiction. They know that lack of alternative options and a feeling of vulnerability is a huge factor in entering prostitution. Why don't you?

What's wrong with cleaning loos? It's necessary and valuable work that forfills an important need and it is a disgrace that those doing it are not properly remunerated.

Having sex with men is not necessary work - men do not "need" sex.

Also I would rather clean toilets for the rest of my life, then have to have sex with someone I didn't want to and I suspect I'm not alone in this.

The term 'trafficking' does not just mean being moved across borders. It can mean being moved within a country or held against your will for the purposes of sexual exploration. I would be very surprised if it is not a very small percentage of prostituted women who have never experienced this at some point.
