I remember at ante-natal classes when I was expecting DD, they showed the BF video - anyone seen that one?

And I was totally struck by how the breasts all looked, well, 'imperfect'.

Then I realised something: I had never seen real breasts before.

Only inflated implant chests in magazines etc.

Up until that day I thought I had freakish deformed boobs which only surgery could "cure".

I was 25 and thought I was hideously deformed. Makes me feel sad and angry, isn't this the worst kind of misogyny, engendering self-loathing in women, turning us against our own bodies?

You do need to feel good about yourself and it can really really knock your confidence if when your body starts to age and sag ... which is one very good reason not to tie up your self-worth with your appearance - you need to find more enduring qualities to like about yourself like, you know, stuff you're good at, things about your personality etc. Must be hard though if you're stuck with a bloke who compares you to page 3. You have my sympathy.

What's disgusting about long-term breastfeeding? Confused

their right porcelaine its pregnancy that makes you sag, the increased size and tenderness at the begining, to calm down then increase again for bf will have an impact.

KRITIQ · 28/10/2011 16:14

I think the point here is that there is a mahoosive variation in the normal, natural appearance of women's breasts, regardless of age, regardless of whether or not they've been pregnant or breastfed, etc. Appearance has little to do with feeding function or their potential for sexual arousal or to arouse others. However, we've been fed this junk line that they should look like x and if they don't, you are inadequate. Women spend thousands on lotions, potions, creams, underwear contraptions and even surgery to achieve some "ideal" because they "believe" this will make them more attractive, more feminine, more acceptable. It's just crap, pure crap.

SinicalSal · 28/10/2011 19:55

see what happens at half term and the kids start looking up naughty words on google

Bunbaker · 28/10/2011 20:04

Wow! All these deleted threads. I agree with Samhain. You don't usually see "normal" breasts on public view. I admit that the gallery was a bit of an eye opener because you just don't see breasts like those on the beach - and I am pretty well travelled. I have never seen any like those at the swimming pool either. Perhaps these women hide away?

It is obvious that the media have a lot to answer for by portraying breasts as only being round and perky.

I have never been more than an A cup, and pregnancy and breastfeeding didn't change me at all. I don't have enough for gravity to affect me and I only wear a bra so that I don't look like a boy Sad

Toffeefudgecake · 28/10/2011 20:21

Ooh, first chance to get back to this thread and I see that there has been a bunfight which I missed. Can't read any of Porceleine's comments because they've all been deleted. Was I insulted for long-term breastfeeding, by any chance? It doesn't bother me - it's the norm in so many other countries and I think it's weird that our society thinks it odd.

I don't normally come in here, but the ones on the link look perfectly normal , ordinary and attractive to me. I'm shocked if anyone here was surprised.

TeiTetua · 28/10/2011 22:46

It's very sad that so many of us are so familiar with the style of breasts as seen on Page 3, and so un-familiar with the real live ones that most women have. Even on a topless beach, "only the classically attractive girls went topless"! If our society didn't fetishise women's breasts so much, we might all come to understand what perfectly healthy and real (and attractive!) boobs are like. Well, fat chance of that.

PacificDogwood · 28/10/2011 23:03

I am coming very late to this, but feel the need to say great website, thanks for linking to it Smile

I have seen and felt many breasts in my professional life (am a dr), so totally agree that the gallery is a good representation of what real breasts look like.

I happen to like mine, always have and (4 kids, BFing to varying degrees and now aged 45) I still do. They are not porno 'perfect' but they are mine, the feel nice (to me and to DH Wink) and they did their job when called for.

Op, YANBU of course.

How on earth did this descend into a bun fight??

I really wish we could like our bodies a bit more for what they are. I think if we did, we'd be more likely to make more healthy life choices tbh.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 29/10/2011 10:36

Blimey, what happened? Shock

strangerintheday · 29/10/2011 11:11

looks like someone is super proud of her breasts but neglects anything that's above the neckline...
oops

MonstrouslyNarkyPuffin · 29/10/2011 11:27

What's normal is a huge range of size, shape, nipple colour etc. What's shown in the media is a very narrow range.

It's not only damaging for girls to see a narrow range as the norm. Unfortunately the effect of widespread access to porn is starting to have the same kind of impact when it comes to vulvas.

It does show the power of the media.

Well this looks interesting.

I see lots of boobs if I go to the gym, and on beaches in France and Spain I find it is the young girls with pointy-uppy boobs who are more likely to have them covered.

Bunbaker · 29/10/2011 15:08

"I'm shocked if anyone here was surprised."

I can honestly say that I have never seen boobs like most of the ones on the link on the beach or at the swimming pool. Being somewhat flat of chest myself I am not familiar with the "normal" range. It goes back to what is shown in the media, and I agree that it is very damaging, especially when you get some women refusing to breastfeed for what is seen as a very trivial reason.

PigletJohn · 29/10/2011 15:48

the thing that I found very sad was

(picture of woman with fine, normal chest)
woman writes "I've always been depressed about having such ugly, saggy breasts..."

there were quite a few in similar vein.
