I don't know a soul here (we moved here from London a few months ago). What do we think about joining the WI? It's women only, enshrined in their constitution.

I've never made jam in my life. Can I effect revolution from within do you reckon?

Blimey - you're all making me want to go and see what it's all about! Grin

I can sew

LadyBiscuit · 04/02/2011 18:02

Aha we shall all subvert the WI flamingo! It's listening to the Archers that gave me the idea - I'm sure I'm going to fit right in

I just don't think that I've got the right clothes for the uniform, which seems to be loose, linen trousers and tunic tops!

sethstarkaddersmackerel · 04/02/2011 18:39

oh golly, I was going to wear this. (I call it my Feminine Mystique dress.)

LadyBiscuit · 04/02/2011 19:00

Ooh blimey - I really don't have the right clothes. I am just going to wear a baggy jumper and jeans I think. Go for dull and inoffensive

TimeWasting · 04/02/2011 19:17

Baggy jumper and jeans is very anti-mystique.

I have found out where and when my local WI is.

We also have a Mother's Union and a (name of village) Wives, whatever that is.

I appear to live in a retirement village. Grin

AliceWorld · 04/02/2011 19:18

Well I never. I was looking at the Townswomen's Guild to make some feeble joke intelligent observation, and look at their history

But thenthis disappointed me...

Do we know anything more?

LadyBiscuit · 04/02/2011 19:41

What's proper mystique gear? Denim dungarees? :o

(entirely off topic but did anyone watch Marchmont last night and see Alex Kingston in those hideous dungarees? I cannot believe I used to wear them and kudos to her for allowing wardrobe to dress her so vilely :o)

See this - it sounds like MN but with (possibly) less swearing.

LOVE the cross-stitch link. This would add oomph to any coffee morning.

And this seems apt for the MN Feminist t-shirts :o

LadyBiscuit · 04/02/2011 20:30

See the TWG looks good when you look at its history and then you look at the events and it's all a bit Hmm. There isn't one I can go to anyway - DS only goes to pre-school in the morning and their meetings are afternoons/evenings. I will see how the WI is. I wonder if I can knock up that teacosy by next thursday? :o

I might make a feminazi tshirt to wear. Or perhaps a very old anarchist one? Decisions, decisions ...

OP posts:
AliceWorld · 04/02/2011 21:10

ooo like the tea cosy Grin
would be good with one on those feminist fist things

AliceWorld · 04/02/2011 21:12

Actually that would ruin the whole Proudhon reference so ignore me.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 04/02/2011 21:34

thanks Alice, you made me google, and now I know who i'm constantly quoting :o

AliceWorld · 04/02/2011 21:54

And now you can tell the 'Why does Proudhon always drink coffee?' joke Grin

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 04/02/2011 22:04

Yes. Just after I've learnt to pronounce it.

And made friends with loads of philosotwats anarchists. :o

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 04/02/2011 22:04

Proudhon sounds like something out of Nancy Mitford, or netmums, the way my brain is pronouncing it.

AliceWorld · 04/02/2011 22:09

Prude-hon. Hon like gone.

Yes it's a crap joke in most circles. But if you ever get with some political theorists, you'll be the life and soul.

AliceWorld · 04/02/2011 22:10

Were you going ProudHun. Now that's a name and a half. I'm tempted to name change to it...

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 04/02/2011 22:18

Well, somewhere between "Proud Hon" (as in Honourable) and "Proud Hun", yes :o

Kind of like a landed gentry version of netmums.

FlamingoBingo · 05/02/2011 12:10

The last 10 posts or so have just gone right over my head! Confused

Too tired to google - would anyone care to enlighten me!?

TimeWasting · 05/02/2011 12:20

Proudhon was an early anarchist writer who said 'Property is theft'.

Only on MN. Grin

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 05/02/2011 12:23

definitely join the WI - I'm in my local WI and we are proper feminists

It's really good fun too - we're also big politically, and have annual "resolutions" which are proposals we present to the Government.

Over the years, we have campaigned for huge change in women's rights in the UK and abroad.

FlamingoBingo · 05/02/2011 12:23

Ooh! I've heard the 'property is theft' quote!

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 05/02/2011 12:34

i do wish you lot would stop going off topic.

here's my WI website
for you to look at.
