Are any of you radical feminists?

I would consider myself a radical feminist. I was told yesterday that the logical conclusion to radical feminism is lesbianism and seperatism! I am not in agreement, but would love to know your opinions.

I don't know. But I have seen stuff recently which suggests I am. Didn't know I was but I seem to share a lot of views that I keep seeing ascribed to rad fems, and disagreeing with views that are anti rad fems.

I'm not into lesbianism and separatism though. I thought that was just a specific branch at a specific time? I can see their logic though.

Actually saying that I am into women only spaces which is related to separatism.

How do you define it Jazzicat? I'd be interested to know in working myself out.

HerBeatitude · 30/10/2010 13:22

I have no idea.

I would question the notion that lesbianism is automatically associated with feminism though. Lesbianism is about sexuality, not about politics (although of course you can get political about it). But I know perfectly apathetic lesbians who are not remotely political.

sethstarkaddersmummyreturns · 30/10/2010 13:26

who told you it Jazzicatz? Was it a radical feminist who has gone down the political lesbian route herself or some antifeminist bloke for example?!

HerBeatitude · 30/10/2010 13:38

oh yes of course, I'd forgotten, there were "political lesbians" in the seventies weren't there, where women who identified as heterosexual, nevertheless pursued lesbianism as a political choice because they didn't want to have relationships with men. But was that particularly widespread?

I agree, I think discussing whether to change the venue is a bit shocking. I'd be sympathetic if they'd said 'yes of course we will, we just have to work out where' and then they couldn't come up with something immediately, but it should go without saying that they should be willing to do it. And these days with the DDA so many more places are accessible than used to be so it shouldn't be that hard.

I am. I agree that tinkerung aroubd the edges will never be enough. It's just anti-feminist propaganda to say you have to be a lesbian to be a radical feninist.

Most of the lesbians i know are v passionate and activist about gay rights but dont give two hoots about feninism.

Not sure how it's "anti-feminist" when it was radical feminists themselves who were saying it. Their argument was that feminists who weren't lesbians were literally sleeping with the enemy.
