Disgusted with what I look like.

I've just seen a video of myself and just honestly can't believe how awful I look.
Im four stones overweight with high cholesterol, high blood sugar , pre diabetes . I've had years and years of stress and it shows in my face and body.
I've had a underactive thyroid for over thirty years.

Im about to go on a low calorie shake diet through the NHS at the end of the month.

im just so upset and horrified by what I look like. I look like I'm dying.

if this shake diet doesn't work I don't know where there is to go. I can't seem to stick to a diet for more than about three weeks myself . I'm scared to take weight loss drugs.

I walk three or four miles several times a week and eat a healthy diet. It's just crept up on me over years.

Has anyone felt this desperate and turned it around?

The point is not to stay on them for life! It's an NHS programme designed to last three months to reverse pre diabetes and diabetes.

Just do that then.

That's bloody amazing. Well done you. You've truly charged your body and life. Really interesting to read, I need to lose that amount or I weld settle for less. I turned down bariatric surgery in favour of Wegovy. I'm only a few months in and have lost two stones. I have wondered if I've made the right decision and will I really be able to lose what I want to lose with with Wegovy, also what happens when I come off it. Reading your comment is really encouraging, thanks, well done you.

Is that the pills?

There's a difference. Thyroid medication is an absolute necessity. Weight loss drugs are just one way to lose weight and they are expensive, with side effects.

You see OP, this is where your lodge is taking a little kink. And I mean that kindly. You and I both take levothyroxine to stop ourselves from developing cretinism and premature death. I take Mojarro because without it I am severely insulin resistant and will pile the weight back on in a mash of Weeks the amount of weight I was carrying will also limit my life .Your four Stone. An equal risk to your life and longevity. Obesity carries a significant risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke along with associated risk such as diabetes and it’s associated side effects such as diabetic renopathy (blindness) and severe problems from neuropathy of the extremities such as feet.

I regard Mojarro as no different from levothyroxine in its ability to prevent premature death. I urge you to look at the peer reviewed research On the SUMMOUNT research that I posted earlier and let you work it out for yourself. The minuscule risk of side effects severe enough to match the likelihood of serious poor outcomes from long-term obesity. It’s a very large study and will hopefully put your mind at rest and And you wonder why you waited so long to regain your health and happiness.

I'm eyeing the pen I have had in the fridge since last December. There is no way I would want to be on it for life though.

You don’t need to be. I don’t know why you keep saying that.

It seems extremely irresponsible of all these posters ordering you to go on weight loss injections/medication. All medication has risks and the effects are dependent on the individual. There are other ways to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle without injecting yourself every day, but you may decide you want to try that anyway.

Sorry you hate the way you look - I relate to being disgusted with myself sometimes, but the people around you won't think that at all. Try to treat yourself well.

I have gallstones after going on mounjaro, they were not there before starting but are now two years in, I am not having symptoms and have stopped it now, and I understand they can be caused by weight loss (my weight loss was slow and steady) but also the meds.

So yes there are risks to be aware of, quite common ones as well as rare.

I am still glad I took it and lost weight, I think it would have been hard without it.

Its not the feeling of it, its the fear of not administering it properly. Also the fear of side effects and long term implications for health that as yet we know nothing about it.

Unlike the implications of your current health issues?

My biggest worry was getting used to the suppression and overeating after coming off. So I have intentionally stayed on the lowest dose. For me it is just something to keep the edge off so I make better choices and eat less.

I wasn’t a snacker, didn’t really eat that often, but when I ate it was too much of the wrong thing. The jabs allowed me to change my diet and reduce my intake without leaving me hangry. I hope that this will continue when I stop the jabs, and that I don’t become reliant on them because I’ve made the conscious choice to stay on a low dose.

I was sure that as a non-snacker that the ‘food noise’ thing wouldn’t be a benefit to me, but actually it has changed food into being for sustenance instead of taking the pleasure from it, I no longer crave particular salty foods etc (not that often anyway) and have lost 4 stone in 21 weeks

Nobody can tell you that the jabs are definitely the way to go, but if you already have one, and you know you want to lose weight, one month giving it a go won’t hurt.

Just stick to the lowest dose and you are less likely to have a dependency on it and more likely to develop better portion control habits…hopefully a little weight off will help your back too 💐

To many WLI are a necessity, for me having tried so many different ways to shift menopausal weight I was heading for multiple health issues. Yes they are costly which is why I restructured my whole budget to allow for them again but tbh the saving on food, drink, bigger clothes all the time, etc means overall the cost is not as bad. My weight gain as well as physical risks had a huge effect on my mental wellbeing, self confidence, energy at work, so much more, that I know I've made the right choice.

mondaytosunday · 03/10/2026 20:54

Shakes will make you lose but it’s very short term. Get a calorie tracking app like My Fitness Pal. For the first week just record everything you put in your mouth. Weigh or measure it (often you can scan the packet). Then look at the diary at the end if the week and see what you are actually eating and drinking. Work out your TDEE and get yourself in a 500 calorie deficit. Consistency is key. Watch those liquid calories! First few days will be hard but keep your eye on the prize. Time is going to pass anyway so wouldn’t you rather be two stone or more lighter in six months?

Keepingtimer · 03/10/2026 21:11

I've been using MFP on and off for literally years. I start off logging everything and watching the calories. Then I just get erratic and then stop. It's pitiful.

I know perfectly well how to lose weight, I've done it many times in the past. This time I just can't keep motivated. There are no excuses.

OP posts:
lifeturnsonadime · 03/10/2026 21:54

If you have a pen in the fridge this is really a no-brainer imo.

At some point you must have seen WLI as the answer otherwise it wouldn't be in there.

Just bite the bullet and take it one day at a time.

You don't have to take the second jab if you change your mind, you certainly don't need to be on WLI for life, although you may decide the benefits will make it worth it.

Keepingtimer · 03/10/2026 22:21

AccidentalPrawnYouFool · 03/10/2026 22:24

Why do you assume you will need to be on the WLI for life? I took them for 6 months lost the weight I wanted to, stopped and now am maintaining at a size 10. I fluctuate like everyone but it’s easy to lose a couple of kilos when you’re a normal healthy weight.
Take the MJ - the side effects that it may not even give you are less concerning than the side effects of obesity. Stop listening to other peoples warped opinions. Read peer reviewed papers and make up your own mind.
Why are people so weird about meds. You’re taking meds for your thyroid, you’d likely not think twice about taking medications for other serious health conditions.
IMO MJ and a healthy balanced diet sound much better than the awful NHS Cambridge starvation diet milkshakes.

Actually , no. I watched the video about six times and still managed to prick my fingers so they were bleeding. Don't ask me how, I couldn't understand how to turn the thing from 0 to 1 . I didn't realise that you have to keep on and on turning it. Anyway, hopefully next time it will be easier. What happens with the needles? When the sharps bin needs emptying, how do you empty it?

I don't know what's wrong with me. It's the whole idea of injecting myself with something. It just feels wrong.

If you got the needle into your skin and the medication under your skin despite struggling with not putting your fingers against the pointy bit - and not quite understanding that turning it to get the full dose means turning it until it stops so a dose came out - it's easy. Because you still managed it.

If you didn't do it this time, the big cap that covers the needle assembly is what you use to remove the needle after use. Don't try and put the tiny needle cover back on, just the cap and then you are protected when you unscrew it.

Sharps bins aren't emptied. When they are full, they are sealed (don't close the lid fully until that point as you will not be able to open it again) and disposed of responsibly and then either a local pharmacy will accept them or your council will collect a sealed bin as a free clinical waste collection.

And as a general rule, don't listen to people who get their medical knowledge from TikTok or their mates down the gym.

Bloody hell, you’re not dying. You’re a bit over weight and have some pre diabetes symptoms. Go on Mounjaro - kill two birds with one stone. Don’t bother with bloody shakes.
