Disgusted with what I look like.

I've just seen a video of myself and just honestly can't believe how awful I look.
Im four stones overweight with high cholesterol, high blood sugar , pre diabetes . I've had years and years of stress and it shows in my face and body.
I've had a underactive thyroid for over thirty years.

Im about to go on a low calorie shake diet through the NHS at the end of the month.

im just so upset and horrified by what I look like. I look like I'm dying.

if this shake diet doesn't work I don't know where there is to go. I can't seem to stick to a diet for more than about three weeks myself . I'm scared to take weight loss drugs.

I walk three or four miles several times a week and eat a healthy diet. It's just crept up on me over years.

Has anyone felt this desperate and turned it around?

Well don’t stay on them for life. When you get to a weight that means you can exercise much more you wouldn’t need them. I go on and off them because my job restricts me but it won’t always. You’re being a bit daft and seem to be wallowing in pity when you don’t need to.

MyManinCaracas · 03/10/2026 05:06

It’s completely normal to be anxious about taking WLI at first. I made my husband stay with me for a couple of hours in case I died! And I wouldn’t take them at night for the same reason. That was July 2025, and I’m now 50 pounds lighter, thinking about my new autumn wardrobe. Best of luck, OP.

Jerrybalanitis · 03/10/2026 05:10

Put 4 stone in books or weights on your scales and look at what your heart is carrying. But its up to you, you have been given help, listened to a thicko friend rather than science so carry on looking like you are dying. Put your life on hold. Be miserable. Its up to you, you are not a victim in this.

Bloody hell, you’re not dying. You’re a bit over weight and have some pre diabetes symptoms. Go on Mounjaro - kill two birds with one stone. Don’t bother with bloody shakes.

100%

If you don’t sort out your weight, you will be reliant on other medications. Take the jabs!!

redjaffacake · 03/10/2026 06:50

I’ve lost 5stone in Mounjaro and now 10st12.

up in till now my whole life has been dictated by food and weightloss and I can now literally eat anything and not gain weight as my body body does what it is supposed to do.

“Mounjaro” face is related to any weight loss.
I will stay in it for life but no one has too. One person has said some bit negative but lots of people on here a saying how it changed their lives.

it does pay for its self too!!

Good question. I plucked up the courage to start after Xmas but was put off by someone who was horrified and telling me it was dangerous. It's still in my fridge. I am scared of side effects and worried I won't inject it properly. I know that sounds pathetic but it really makes me anxious. I wish I could do it under medical supervision.

You can now take pills - you don't have to inject yourself.

Potterwatch89 · 03/10/2026 07:05

Just offering a different route than WLI. Have you thought about intermittent fasting / time restricted eating? It helps to naturally reduce high insulin levels, is 100% completely free and involves no drugs at all. I have lost 30lbs doing it since the start of the year and haven't once counted a calorie, macro or my protein intake.

Strongly suggest you read Gin Stephen's books start with Delay don't deny then fast feat repeat. She also has some great podcasts.

Good luck with your weight loss journey whatever you decide, it's scary seeing those photos and not recognising yourself anymore, but I'm now here 10 months on at my goal weight and will continue IF for life, it's really easy and maintainable.

EmpressStorm · 03/10/2026 07:33

I don't really understand your logic op. You need to diet on the drug s. Will you rely on the shakes for life? How are they retraining your eating habits? cAn you help us understand?

Keepgettingolder81 · 03/10/2026 07:44

WLI, get over your fear and actively starts to change your life on your health. You will be grateful afterwards.

Join a gym and a yoga class. Get a really good haircut.

However most people aren't paying a small fortune for those medications

A small fortune is no good to the OP if she thinks she’s dying from being so unhealthy. There are hundreds of countries where paying for your own medication is perfectly normal. You shouldn’t not consider doing things because the government isn’t paying for it.

Is there a reason why you can’t actually exercise rather just walking a few miles, is there a reason you can’t go swimming for example? Or do something that raises your heart rate and burns some calories and makes you feel good?

I swam all last winter several times a week. It made no difference and aggravated a back issue I have .

Yes I should be doing this. I have tried a few times but find it difficult. I do think it would make a big difference.

I ordered them and then chickened out. The doctor said if I was going on the shake programme I had to do one or the other, and the shake programme is free.

I don't want to rely on drugs and it seems many people stay on them even after losing weight.

You're already on Levothroxine presumably so what's the difference? You mightn't need to stay on it and you need a bit of help so go for it. Discuss with your GP beforehand if you need reassurance..

What evidence is there that they are dangerous?

rhabarbarmarmelade · 03/10/2026 08:44

Has anyone heard about vision side effects, exacerbating shortsightedness on WLI. Is putting me off.

I also read something about it being linked to thyroid cancer. This is what scares me. On the other hand, being overweight is a morbidity risk too.

If you feel uneasy about injecting yourself you could try the pills? My neighbour was around 20kg overweight and started taking Wegovy. She lost all of that and is much happier at around 62kg now.

allthemind · 03/10/2026 08:59

I have afriend who has lost 4st on mourjanho and she has the injections done under supervisor at a local pharmacy, might be reassuring with your medical history to do it at a pharmancy?

35965a · 03/10/2026 09:00

Mounjaro, I’ve lost over 6 stone in the past year on it. I look and feel amazing. Exercise basically does nothing for weight loss especially when you’re several stones overweight, it’s the eating you need to get under control. Plus when you’ve lost a chunk of weight exercise becomes so much easier and enjoyable. There are risks and benefits to any medication but there are risks to being obese.

jeaux90 · 03/10/2026 09:05

If you seriously don’t want to do WL injections then go on a Keto diet and start doing weights 3 times a week. Find a class which is curated like a group PT so you then don’t have to figure it out yourself and it’s more social.

You rely on drugs for your thyroid though?

Why is this different?

You've been on them for 30 years you said

Why is this different?

The NHS is woefully behind in matters of weight. Offering you low calorie shakes. Probably full of shit and artificial sweetners. UPF

Go on WLI and you'll crave a healthy diet, fruit and veg, freshly cooked stuff.
