Found a lump in my breast

Jadelr · 12/09/2025 17:51

Hi,

Yesterday I found a lump in my breast and called the GP this morning and I have an appointment on Monday to see the GP. I know I will likely be referred under the two week rule as I had a breast lump checked out in 2016 when I was 21 that was just fatty tissue. I’m a very anxious person and have been none stop feeling the lump and googling all day, I’m worried sick. My brain keeps jumping to the worst case scenarios.

The lump feels somewhat moveable and feels oval in shape and quite small, I’m praying it’s something benign. Has anyone had a similar experience and it turned out to be ok? Being an anxious person especially surrounding my health I’m struggling already, my mind is racing 😣

The waiting to find out is one if the worst bits if this whole journey.

Hope you’re okay.

WonderingWanda · 12/09/2025 17:56

Sorry op, you must be so stressed. Obviously no one knows which is why it needs to get checked. Plenty do turn out to be nothing as you know because it happened to you. Try to so something mindless that keeps your brain busy and stops you spiralling. I find cleaning quite a good distraction. Fingers crossed for you.

It is, it’s awful. Waiting so long to just find out what it is, and now I have a son which makes this whole ordeal worse because I always worry if I get poorly because of him, he needs me. Hopefully things will be ok 😒

thankyou, yes I do use cleaning as my distraction I always have done when I’m struggling. Now I have my son I think more catastrophic and worry more, fingers crossed everything will fine 😣

I’ve been there, twice. The worry is bloody awful. But both times mine turned out to be cysts and the extremely high likelihood is that yours will too. I won’t say don’t worry, because you will anyway, but I’m sending a handhold and a rather unmumsnetty hug. Good luck xx

Mischance · 12/09/2025 18:04

I have had this several times and they have always been benign. The waiting is hell, I know.

Please try and stop googling. Every person is different and nothing on there applies to you personally. It is just general information. Organise some fun with your son this weekend if you can.

Thank you so much, it’s so awful and all my mind can jump too is its going to be something awful 😣 I’m not sure what cysts would feel like but my limp feels abit hard so not sure what it could be, let’s hope it’s nothing serious 😔 xx

What did your lumps turn out to be and if you don’t mind answering what did they feel like? I’m taking him out this weekend to take my mind off the GP appointment, it’s not so much the appointment I’m dreading it’s the further testing that I’m scared of. But im going to do my best and stay off the internet for now x

90% of breast lumps turn out to be harmless. I've had four! There is absolutely no point in wearing yourself out worrying about this before you need to.

i Know I’m just an anxious person, I’m currently in therapy for my anxiety so it’s something I do struggle with. Can I ask what yours turned out to be?

Me too *Jadelr, *found mine weeks ago but no appointments at my GP til next Wednesday (booked it on 18th August) so I know exactly how you're feeling, I'm anxiously waiting with you. Will keep everything crossed for good news for you on Monday, the waiting is like torture though!

user64291 · 12/09/2025 18:21

Hi. I went through this last week. Ended up with being told fibrocystic changes likely due to fluctuating hormones (I’m in peri). Weirdly the lump went down before my appointment which showed it was hormonal. If you’re due your period that can sometimes prompt breast changes

They all turned out to nothing really, just bits where the tissue had got thick, not even cysts. No treatment needed. For one I had a needle biopsy, which is very quick and easy and the others just a mammogram or mammogram and ultrasound. They all felt quite different from each other. I was told some women do just have lumpy breasts.

Sorry you have to feel this way too, it’s an awful feeling isn’t it 😔 let’s hope we both receive some positive news 🫶🏻

My lump does get more tender around my period however I can’t tell whether it’s the lump that gets more tender or just the surrounding tissue. Hopefully mine ends up being something benign 🙏

Mine were hard too and immovable. Googling sent me down a rabbit hole of terror! The tests they do are not scary at all. Examination by consultant, mammogram, (didn’t hurt me at all and on one occasion the machine wouldn’t work so she had to attempt it about 20 times) and ultra sound. Got told they were cysts straight after. I went private though because I couldn’t even get a GP appointment.

Yeah Google says the worst, I’m trying my best not to google too much! Do they offer mammograms to younger women online it says they usually don’t because breast tissue is more dense? I’m 28, I’m praying it’s nothing serious 😣 was your lump very big? mines like a small little grape well smaller than a grape too be honest

Had similar, same day appt at GP, who confirmed it was tissue. Weirdly by the time I got to the appt, I’d found a similar ‘lump’ on the other breast. GP said anything symmetrical tends to be tissue and size fluctuations down to hormones etc. Breasts are lumpy by design and yes, some lumps may need additional intervention but others can just be nothing. Try not to worry.

Thankyou for replying, yeah I have quite lumpy breast tissue in general however I can tell the difference between the lumpy tissue and the lump. Hopefully it’s nothing serious

I’ve just looked up the data. Breast cancer is very unusual at your age. Try not to worry, although I know that’s difficult.

Jadelr · 16/09/2025 20:49

Thank you everyone. I have my breast clinic appointment Monday 29th September. Hoping all goes well 🙏

Sending good vibes for you for the 29th Jadelr, my GP appointment is tomorrow and I can admit here that I'm quietly terrified. Pretty sure it will be mammogram and ultrasound (mine is actually above my breast, on the flat part of my upper chest) as next steps so more waiting, and I have to figure out how not to worry the life out of my (16yo, autistic and anxious) DD by thinking of a reason to be at the hospital as she will notice on life360. Have to be up in 4 and a half hours but can't settle so here I am!

Hi, thankyou! How did your GP appointment go? It’s so worrying when you find a lump. I’ve just been trying to keep busy until my breast clinic appointment otherwise I know my mind will spiral 😒 x

Hi , I had a lump similar to what you described, when I was 26 and it turned out to be benign . It’s called fibro adenoma ( not sure about the spelling) and I had it removed. I understand that you must be feeling very anxious and I remember being terrified as I waited for the operation and the results. And the operation was done at the student doctors exam time and I was asked to be a test patient; which was a weird and somewhat embarrassing experience being examined multiple times !

good luck OP, try not to worry and avoid Dr.Google !

Hi,

thankyou for replying to my post! I’m hoping that’s what mine turns out to be, I’m 28 and I have had a breast lump examined when I was 21 but he said it was just a lump of fatty tissue. But I’m just terrified, I think more so now I suffer really badly with anxiety so anything health related triggers me quite badly! Do all fibroadenomas have to be removed? x
