Is kefir a scam

It’s not cheap so I want to know if it’s actually helping me or if it’s just an expensive scam. I have severe IBS if you take it does it help you

I get Arla organic from Ocado, £2.95 for a litre carton. It's the nicest one I've tried and not that expensive. I have it most days for breakfast with fruit and nuts/seeds.

Make your own?

Riversof0tter5 · 20/03/2025 21:41

Kefir hasn't had any different effect from bio live yogurt, or homemade ayran or homemade dahi

All good and really help

Cheap to make

It helps but it's not going to cure IBS. Much better IMO are multi enzyme tablets from Holland and Barrett. If I take one I can then actually eat foods that normally upset my stomach. I use them sparingly though as there's a cumulative effect of eating food that affect IBS and I don't want push my luck so I mostly try to avoid 'bad' foods.
Have you tried a low fodmap diet? Onions and other alliums are my big problem.

I have kefir from Chuckling Goat brand (you have to buy it direct from their website). It took about 4 months but it sorted out a lot of digestive issues that I’d had for years. I now have it every day and if I don’t have it for a few weeks I really notice a negative impact (bluntly lots more farting, bloating and pain etc!).

Consider yourself warned that it’s way stronger and more powerful than the supermarket stuff and took me a while to get used to the fairly gross taste.. the supermarket stuff tastes amazing and mild to me now 😂

how do you have a stomach of steel

I grew up on a farm drinking unpasteurised milk in a very dirty house. I think my microbiome is pretty active!

It’s £3.50 for a litre in Tesco no additives

In our Tesco, if you look in the world foods section the polish version is cheaper

I don't think it's a scam, just the latest fad food using 'gut health' as a selling point.

I have IBS and can't eat fermented things, whatever the brand name. If I have a flare up I have to follow a low FODMAP diet. My assumption is that I already have enough of the 'good gut bacteria' and adding more to it upsets my digestive balance.

I make my own so it’s very cheap. My eczema has almost disappeared, it only flares up if I miss a few days. I have mine on overnight oats and add fruit and seeds as it’s much more tangy than the commercial stuff.

Maybe "latest" in the English speaking world? I don't get it because I eat loads of kimchi and make my own yoghurt. But loads of my friends' families have always had it as part of their breakfast.

My DH loves the stuff. Drinks it mixed with cherry juice (good for preventing gout)
Anecdotally also good for ADHD.
Fermented foods are apparently v good for gut health.

Ilovelowry · 21/03/2025 10:11

I have it with my porridge most days. But I use the yoghurt kefir, not the drink.

I love the aldi one, the Biotful quark yoghurt one is super delicious too but I can only get it on ocado now - waitrose sell a flavoured version but surely having sweeteners with your kefir negates the benefits! Also I love the plain taste.

I mix the aldi one into a pot of Greek yoghurt, I reckon that it turns the yoghurt kefir like too and the bacteria spread.

I drink kombucha too so I'm fully on board with the gut biome theories.
