It’s not cheap so I want to know if it’s actually helping me or if it’s just an expensive scam. I have severe IBS if you take it does it help you

Fermented foods are supposed to be good for your gut Biome, and making your own kefir would be much cheaper.

However, I don't know anything about how they work for people with IBS.

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 20/03/2025 20:13

I make my own. It's very easy, just make sure you buy grains not powder which is single use
My grains multiply so I often give them away
Supposedly there are more probiotics in home made kefir. Once you have the grains it's just the price of the full fat milk

I have Crohns and since having Kefir every day the bloating and wind I have had for years has almost disappeare.
I buy a Polish brand from Asda which is quite alot cheaper than the big brands.

How much kefir do you take daily

150mls - I have it on fruit for my breakfast.

Iloveeverycat · 20/03/2025 20:31

Does it help you.
A gastroenterologist told my son it was really good to help IBS and the consultant said he used it himself.

BurgundyZero · 20/03/2025 20:32

Not a scam. Widely drunk in Russia, Poland, etc as ordinary food since the dawn of time. Very good for my IBS but the taste took a lot of getting used to. I'd start with very small amounts esp if you are prone to reflux

Fantina · 20/03/2025 20:35

Is there a particular brand that is good to buy? Ie, one that isn’t full of additives etc?

I’m not a massive fan of the taste but have it with a bit of ground cumin and salt mixed in, plus some puréed cucumber and celery which makes it actually rather nice. Sort of kefir/green juice hybrid.

HarryVanderspeigle · 20/03/2025 20:39

The plain stuff is cheap in the eastern European section of the supermarket friends. The flavoured stuff is expensive, but yiu can add your own flavours.

yes. It is all a scam by Big Kefir to get your money.

Or, it's another of the fermented foods that Europeans have been consuming for centuries and the UK is just catching up?

TheDevilFindsWorkForIdleMums · 20/03/2025 20:40

It's not expensive.....aldi sell it. Can't say I've noticed much difference to my bloating but I've started taking a daily probiotic and I'm impressed so far. More so with the ginormous poos I keep passing 😬😳🤣🤣🤣

Fantina · 20/03/2025 20:41

The Eastern European section locally to me is all dry goods. Surely the Polish brands need refrigerated too?

Downthemarshes · 20/03/2025 20:43

Buy it in the polish section - it's £2 for a big carton - the posh flavoured ones are more expensive.

You need to shop elsewhere - most big supermarkets have a polish fridge bit.

FishPie2 · 20/03/2025 20:45

This is the 1 I buy in Asda in the fridge in the Polish section not with the big brand ones. No additives.

If it doesn’t help then look into FODMAP.

Allthesnowallthetime · 20/03/2025 20:47

Try it and see? If you don't like it, don't buy it again.

Canaryhead · 20/03/2025 20:49

It’s £3.50 for a litre in Tesco no additives

We make our own. I whizz it up with some frozen cherries and have it in the afternoon.

can’t comment on the ibs as I rarely have gut issues. I drink it because I like it.

What brand Fishpie???

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 20/03/2025 21:06

I use it I usually buy Yeo Valley, always natural. I did make it for a while but I find it a bit sharp.

Probably Lowicz or Mlekovita - both are good brands. I think they have flavored strawberry Lowicz in Tesco as well.

FishPie2 · 20/03/2025 21:32

I linked it further up the page - Lowicz.
No Tesco or Sainsburys near to me then found this in Asda.
