Cervical polyp

Hi all,

Had my smear 2 weeks ago and got my letter the other day saying all clear for HPV. The nurse never mentioned anything at the time but I had a phone call this morning saying I need to see the GP as I have a polyp they want to examine?

This has thrown me and I'm worried now, I had LLETZ in 2016 for abnormal cells. I did get a clear smear 6 months later and then another clear one at the usual 3 yearly check.

I have a Jaydess coil and have regular monthly light spotting which I always thought was just a light period but now I'm worried it's not and it's more like irregular bleeding.

Has anyone had a polyp found at a smear and was it all OK for you?

Almost exact same situation, can I ask are you okay now?

Sidge · 07/01/2024 16:52

If it’s any consolation I’ve referred a lot of women for cervical polyps and not one of them was abnormal.

Anecdotal I know, but hopefully reassuring.

worriedgal · 07/01/2024 16:58

I had this at the beginning of December.
Urgent referral after a smear test.
I had a large polyp removed and it was completely fine.
Smear was normal too so try not to worry- my gynaecologist said it's very common and like spots/ acne that can form on the cervix 😱

Thyra123 · 07/01/2024 20:13

Thank you, my heath anxiety is debilitating, I’ve barely eaten or slept for the last two days for worrying so I’ll try and calm down a bit now, really appreciate it

Thyra123 · 07/01/2024 20:13

I have acne on my face so that’s also reassuring thank you so much for commenting!

Mumaway · 07/01/2024 20:14

I have a very large polyp and asked for a referral for reassurance. The consultant said in the absence of HPV, cancerous change is almost non-existent, and all I needed to do was regular smears and ignore it.

worriedgal · 07/01/2024 21:26

@Thyra123
I completely understand the worry
Dh and I were besides ourselves and convinced it was something awful but it really was nothing to worry about and even the removal was not difficult.
I bled a bit for a few days and went back a week or so later to be checked and got the path lab results were ready so I was signed off by the consultant.

Thyra123 · 07/01/2024 21:29

That’s amazing! I’ve not had HPV, altho I had cell changes removed by Lletz years ago, so perhaps the HPV was removed then. In the last six years my smears have been clear and HPV negative. I’ll try and chill out a bit, thank you!

Thyra123 · 07/01/2024 21:30

I pray this will be the case for me! Thank you I really appreciate your reply!

Gbeanf · 07/01/2024 21:36

Not to worry.

I also have had a previous LLETZ several years ago and had a large polyp removed earlier this year. It had been picked up incidentally on a smear.

Removal was straightforward and done in 5 minutes in clinic, didn't even need any local. No issues at all.

Pathology was totally benign, as is the case with 99 percent of these.

Thyra123 · 07/01/2024 23:26

I am so grateful for your message :) I wonder if the Lletz procedure causes some scar tissue which might lead to a polyp or perhaps it’s totally unrelated and polyps are just random 🤷 thank you again!

lollydu · 13/01/2024 12:01

I saw a consultant who looked and said it actually doesn't look like a polyp or anything that needs to be removed and was a good spot from the nurse who did my smear as it's tiny. He said could be scar tissue from my lletz procedure or just part of my anatomy but going back end of this month for monitoring to see if it's grown or changed and if not then I'll be discharged x

Hi. Are you a nurse @Sidge

I am a mess worrying about 2 x Polyps I have got coming out of my cervix, from inside and been told I need a hysteroscopy to see further / remove. Terrified! never had kids either (someone else said Polyps are unusual for someone without children).

I have had a smear (it was long overdue) and came back clear and no HPV, I had this done privately, so cell LBC and HPV test. Thing is, I don't know how reliable these tests are and I have UTi systems, lower back aching and my head is a mess worrying. I went for the private gynae appointment as I was spotting a bit in between periods. I have had a TV ultrasound too (which was normal) with the exception of an area (slightly hetrogenous myometrium) and womb lining 10.1 but I was due on a period.

I have done a few dipstick urine tests at home, constantly saying white cells and blood, sometimes a trace sometimes none, sometimes more. I am a wreck stressing thinking the polyp is bad and spread to my bladder.

Any advice welcome :(

The polyp turned out to be benign thankfully. Thanks for all your reassurance :)

lollydu · 24/05/2024 20:05

That's great news Thyra123

@missiz - hopefully hearing all the situations in this thread will go some way to reassuring you? Try not to worry, it's very common for dipsticks to show up microscopic blood in menstruating women.

I don’t think cervical polyps are common in women who haven’t had kids though….

Jenesaisquoiii · 31/05/2024 13:42

Hey all
Can anyone kindly share whether they experienced polyps with a bit of period like pain, bang in the middle of cycles when it's not usually crampy at all?
Was sex ever painful with your polyp?
Also did polyps cause any lack of discharge for you ladies? (Been very dry and a bit smelly so wondering if I've got BV as well as polyp in cervix that caused a very slight bleed in between a period)
So sorry re TMI!
Also wondering whether I'm experiencing signs of early menopause (am 33 🥴)
Glad to hear it's normally not a serious problem! Am free of HPV too so glad about that too

Jenesaisquoiii · 31/05/2024 13:42

18 months post partum with first baby, just so scared to have sex again as used to really enjoy it 😆

I tend to get bad ovulation pain (so in the middle of the cycle) but since the polyp was removed it seems less?
Not had pain or dryness, it would be a little early for you to have perimenopausal symptoms but not unheard of. Polyps are really common and 99% of the time harmless, but I’d go and get a swab done by GP or GUM clinic to check re the other symptoms just to put your mind at rest. Great news about no HPV!

Cyclewidow46 · 09/06/2024 18:05

Many years ago I was having a lot of bleeding in early pregnancy. Obviously I was referred to EPAU and luckily baby was fine. A large polyp was found on my cervix which was the cause of the irregular bleeding. The polyp was removed at 20 weeks. That was my first pregnancy so you do not need to have had children to develop polyps.

How did you get on?

I haven’t been seen yet. My Gp had another look at it, to check its size and any changes. I’m worried 😞 she said it’s the same but I’m waiting to be seen by a consultant. Apparently cos it’s NHS I have to see a consultant of theirs now despite the fact I saw a private Gynae@Thyra123

Has anyone had cervical polyps and not had a baby?
