Cervical polyp

Hi all,

Had my smear 2 weeks ago and got my letter the other day saying all clear for HPV. The nurse never mentioned anything at the time but I had a phone call this morning saying I need to see the GP as I have a polyp they want to examine?

This has thrown me and I'm worried now, I had LLETZ in 2016 for abnormal cells. I did get a clear smear 6 months later and then another clear one at the usual 3 yearly check.

I have a Jaydess coil and have regular monthly light spotting which I always thought was just a light period but now I'm worried it's not and it's more like irregular bleeding.

Has anyone had a polyp found at a smear and was it all OK for you?

Has anyone had cervical polyps and not had a baby?

Yes, me. Never been pregnant. Polyp spotted at regular smear test. It was removed, no issues. I would have had no idea if not for the smear - I had no symptoms. I did have some irregular bleeding, but I was 50, and they're still irregular because I'm in my 50s and they are presumably going to stop soon.

Hi. thanks for replying :)

Did you have to have a hysteroscopy? Where they put the camera inside to remove the polyp? Mine is coming out from my cervix. Really worried about as it’s apparently 1.5-2cm quite big like a worm shape? Waiting to have it removed but need to see a consultant first.

EBearhug · 11/06/2024 07:46

Yes, I saw the consultant. I didn't have a hysteroscopy, I don't think, but I did have some long tool inserted through my cervix to take a biopsy to check. It wasn't comfortable, but no worse than the dentist.

It was like a little red slug. I asked to look. I sort of wish I'd asked to take a photo of it lying in a little kidney tray... But I didn't, mostly because my phone was in a pile with my lower clothes in the room adjacent.

missiz · 12/06/2024 00:13

@EBearhug it sounds like a hysteroscopy. That’s the thin tube thing and they can remove polyps with it too.

what size would you like, like 1-2cm, half a pinky? My one is meant to be red too eek!
Was yours benign?

EBearhug · 12/06/2024 00:34

I don't know - I had more recent gynae investigations, following a 43 dsy bleed over Christmas/January, and the next step would have been a hysteroscopy, for which I would have had the option of sedation, but the ultrasound showed things were okay, apart from a small fibroid, which shouldn't be problematic, so no hysteroscopy. I think this was just a long needle, although I didn't really get to see it - they did that again in the latest round. I think they used something different to remove the polyp, but can't swear to it. A hysteroscopy can also take photos, I think. Anyway, I have been discharged.

My polyp was benign. It was probably about 2-3cm? Not sure.

I’m glad you’re all ok now. It’s stressful isn’t it….
i think I’m going private now as I can’t bear the stress of it anymore. I have pressure in lower back and aching that I’ve had 9 weeks after I pee.

did you find it really stressful and worrying? I literally have been in a state for over 2 months. The meds make me sleep when I have to go bed and I work, try and keep my mind busy but I’m worried sick cos when they do smears, they look at cells. What I’ve got is a chunk of flesh.

yours sounds like mine, Red long thing. That’s what my GP described it as anyway….

EBearhug · 12/06/2024 13:06

For me, the most stressful bits were getting postponed for covid - first them, then me. That shouldn't be such an issue now.

missiz · 13/06/2024 01:21

It is cause they’re not rushing with me. It’s been weeks since I was seen by a consultant. Waiting is horrid.
did you ever have spotting between periods cause of it xx

There's a lot of misinformation on this thread!
Women who haven't had a baby can definitely have polyps
You can have a non-cancerous polyp, a clear smear result and still end up being diagnosed with a stage of endometrial hyperplasia https://www.gloshospitals.nhs.uk/media/documents/Endometrial_hyperplasia_GHPI1709_03_22.pdf

I recently had to have an hysterectomy and bilangual ovaries removal after having mid cycle bleeding that started off as brown discharge. GP thought mid-cycle bleeding could be caused by a polyp. I later found out I did have a polyp but that's not what was causing my mid-cycle bleeding. My diagnosis ending up being atypia endometrial hyperplasia.

The only way you can know you have nothing funky happening in your endometrium is through an endometrial biopsy.

4 months and I’m paying private. It’s 12 months nhs.

Ladymuck2022 · 16/08/2024 22:00

I think people who get polyps over fibroids are lucky- it’s a given they’ll take them out whereas a fibroid suffer can be told oh the fibroid is just buried in muscle tough luck.

I went in for an op with some consultant who argued a fibroid clearly labelled as a fibroid in a previous scan was a polyp, in the end they removed nothing citing muscle, I awoke from an operation to be lied to having asked a direct question and the UK is pleased by this. OK as long as not happening to you I guess.

littledragon99 · 16/08/2024 22:04

I had a large one removed. Simple day procedure but I was fully sedated. Saw a private Gyno as the whole thing freaked me out. Will share details if you like, feel free to DM

EBearhug · 16/08/2024 22:12

If you're lucky, you get polyps and fibroid.

missiz · 17/08/2024 17:46
