Bladder/UTI issues

Posting in here as I didn’t get responses on the COVID board.

I tested positive for COVID 25th Sept following cold like symptoms (cough, achy, headache) started to feel a bit better and returned to work (from home) on Thursday. Thursday afternoon I got sudden stabbing pain in the right side of my abdomen, lasted for a couple of hours and didn’t improve with paracetamol. The pain went from my side down into my pelvis. Since then the side pain has been intermittent but I have a constant feeling of needing to wee. I thought maybe I had cystitis so got 3 days of antibiotics from pharmacy - I finished those and they didn’t make any difference.
I managed to get a doctors appointment, they tested urine, confirmed an infection and gave me 3 days of antibiotics. Those seemed to work - and following the 3 days of taking them I had 2 normal days.
Yesterday the feeling of urgency started up again, couldn’t get doctors appt today but have had urine test at pharmacy who say no infection present.
I am really fed up of the pain and discomfort now and wondered if anyone has had the same and managed to treat it effectively?

Your post has made hairs stand up! I had my Covid vaccination just over a week ago and I have been exactly the same. Pain/sensation started lower right side of body down towards the groin then spread across that area. Took 5 days of my usual UTI Nitro and it felt somewhat better. 2 days later the same if a bit worse. Spoke to then saw a doc today who did a dip test which was negative ( surprise, surprise) and has given me a different Antibiotic - Trimethropine. I feel the need to pee all the time but when I do go and I try not to go often very little pee. Doc started talking about my mind perhaps exaggerating it 🙄 and to try Kegels. WTF! Sample has been sent off. I'm worried that I stop peeing all together.

Rapunzel22 · 07/10/2022 00:18

@JohnNutLips how are you feeling now?

Rapunzel22 · 07/10/2022 00:22

www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_health/4635239-not-a-uti-whats-going-on I see this similar story.

JohnNutLips · 07/10/2022 08:46

@Rapunzel22 Managed to get a doctors appointment yesterday, dip test was clear again but prescribed another 7 days antibiotics in case it is lingering infection. The antibiotics definitely helped last time so I’m hoping a longer course shifts it. It’s really miserable isn’t it 😢

I've been googling since I wrote last and it seems there is an acknowledged link between covid and aggravation of UTI issues in people who suffer from it. Yes it is so worrying and of course these dip tests are pretty useless.

JohnNutLips · 07/10/2022 09:42

They’ve sent another sample off to be tested as they seem to have lost the first one. I’ve been Googling and they do know that there’s a link between the virus and bladder issues - it seem the virus attacks the bladder wall and if damage is caused it can alter the receptors that signal when the bladder is full or not. I am finding that there’s no difference in “feeling” or urgency whether I’ve got a full bladder or not - I can go to the toilet and there be a trickle or a massively long wee and the feeling is no different.

Cross posts 😀 I have never been prone to UTIs before, but I do have diabetes and it’s a known issue that people can get them. One of the days I had COVID I slept from mid afternoon to 1pm the following day and woke up with no need to wee, I think I just got so dehydrated, and I am wondering if that’s what triggered it.

This is me too. Doc told me to not go to the toilet all the time which I wasn't doing to allow my bladder to get full. I am also diabetic.

Rapunzel22 · 07/10/2022 10:06

To clarify - doc was suggesting that I was going to pee all the time instead of allowing bladder to fill up. I wasn't doing this.

JohnNutLips · 07/10/2022 12:04

Same for me, I’m trying very hard not to go to the toilet all the time and to allow my bladder to fill properly.
The nurses have been lovely both times, and she did say yesterday that if the longer course of antibiotics didn’t clear it then I’d need to have further tests.
The fact that it did massively improve the initial infection (dip test did show infection the first time) makes me hope the longer course will clear it. I’m just really worried that it may keep coming back… I’m meant to be away abroad for Half term ☹️

This is my problem too - foreign travel coming up. I've had 3 days of Trimethoprim now and today the sensation was not persistent. Fingers crossed.

Elsamit · 10/10/2022 21:57

I keep stand by antibiotics (bought online) to take on holiday in case of a flare up. Both Trimethroprim and Nitrofurantoin can be bought online.

RainyDaysareCarp · 11/10/2022 21:10

Useful to know @Elsamit

JohnNutLips · 16/10/2022 19:32

How are you now @Rapunzel22 ? Fingers crossed I seem to have cleared it… finished the 7 day course of antibiotics on Friday, I’ve been trying to keep drinking loads and stayed away from tea and coffee.

Ask for a seven day course of a different antibiotic. Don't be fobbed off. Long term hidden infection causes bladder scarring which is painful and long lasting (don't end up being me, basically - I had this in my 20s and it took 10 years and basically being celibate for a year due to bad pregnancy and post natal to get rid of it, and it still flares occasionally m.

YukoandHiro · 16/10/2022 19:39

Oh sorry just seen you've had the seven days. Really hope it did the trick but go back at the first sign of anything else and ask for another sample to be sent off.

Starrr123 · 21/02/2023 18:28

@JohnNutLips im exactly the same!! Did it go away? Im on my second course of 3 day antibiotics!! Xx

JohnNutLips · 21/02/2023 19:07

@Starrr123 i had 2 of the 3 day courses with probably a 2 day break between due to taking time to get an appointment and then get the prescription. I then managed to get 7 days of a different antibiotic and that did the trick, as well as drinking loads of water and not drinking tea or coffee - then gradually weaning back onto those eventually.

JohnNutLips · 21/02/2023 19:39

@Starrr123 i had nitroflurantoin I think! Just keep drinking loads and loads of water to flush it through, mine was worse when my bladder was empty. I hope you feel better soon, it’s really horrible 😖

Starrr123 · 21/02/2023 19:41

JohnNutLips · 22/02/2023 10:26
