Anyone had a breast lump which turned out to not be cancerous?

Hi everyone, i found a breast lump and saw the GP today. I did stop breastfeeding in March but she didn’t think it has anything to do with that. The whole breast has been painful for two weeks. Could be my bra but it hasn’t affected the other breast so doubt it. I have been referred so waiting for a call. As you can imagine I am worried sick! Anyone have this and it turn out to not be cancerous?

I had a harmless lump. Advised to take evening primrose oil tablets.. It went away. More than 20 years ago and had no more trouble.

AtrociousCircumstance · 15/06/2022 12:04

I had a harmless lump. So have my sister and various friends.

Good to have it checked out but it’s probably nothing to worry about.

LovelaceBiggWither · 15/06/2022 12:08

Yes I did. It eventually went away. Can't remember what it was called but it was benign.

RoyKentsChestHair · 15/06/2022 12:09

Yes harmless cyst here too. Most lumps aren’t cancer but it’s good to check it out just in case. If it IS anything to worry about at least you’re having it checked and any treatment will happen quickly. This is one area where I can’t fault the NHS. Thanks

RosyappleA · 15/06/2022 12:09

Thanks for the replies. I really hope it is nothing serious.

I read that 90% of breast lumps are not cancerous. I've had four. Never needed any treatment or follow up. You must get it checked out, but you definitely don't need to worry yet.

Forestdweller11 · 15/06/2022 12:16

Non cancerous lump here as well. Mine was something that occurs in 20 year olds rather than the 40 something that I was. Picked up on mammogram. I did follow the 'cancer ' pathway though even though they were 95% certain from the feel of it that it wasn't cancer - so cancer clinic, biopsy and then ultimately day surgery to remove it. Felt a bit of a fraud to be honest but better it was dealt with than not!

Clarice99 · 15/06/2022 12:19

I've been referred to the breast clinic on three occasions after finding a lump. None were cancerous.

It's pointless me saying 'don't worry' as it is worrying, but you're doing the right thing by getting it checked out.

All the best for getting the all clear.

Bunty55 · 15/06/2022 12:21

Yes twice and both benign.

Mablefly · 15/06/2022 12:24

Yes about 4 times (cysts, fatty tissue etc). All confirmed ok at the breast clinic either by ultrasound or a biopsy. It was scary but so glad I got it checked.

Bluebellbike · 15/06/2022 12:26

I had a lump and underwent a lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node removal. It turned out to be a DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ). I was told it needed to be removed as it could become malignant if left. The margins of the lump and the sentinel lymph node were clear of cancer so I just had a course of radiotherapy. It was 15 years after I finished breastfeeding though.

TooMuchBoozeTooManyBoos · 15/06/2022 12:26

Only myself and almost everyone I know.

It's worrying when it happens to you (what if...) but it's really, really common to have lumps examined that turn out to be nothing to worry about at all.

RosyappleA · 15/06/2022 12:32

Thanks for the reassuring replies. I guess it isn’t time to panic just yet but I will be checking it out asap of course. Now i have no excuse to not do the never ending housework I have to do here 😆. I will update in case anyone else who reads this in future finds it helpful.

I've had cysts for 28 years, since I was 36.
Obviously I have to have new lumps checked and every mammogram I have an ultrasound scan too.
I just have lumpy boobs apparently.
The hospital is always fantastic so try not to worry too much.

Wombat27A · 15/06/2022 12:38

Fibroadenoma, it gets sore so I wear soft bras & don't prod it.

Hugasauras · 15/06/2022 12:39

Me! I found a golf ball sized lump in my breast when I was 38 weeks pregnant. I freaked out as my mum has stage 4 BC and because I was about to give birth! So I went privately to get it checked as I didn't have much time and didn't want to be trying to get to breast clinic with a newborn baby. It was just a cyst that they drained there and then. They said it could come back but I'm now 39 weeks pregnant again and no sign of it thankfully!

MermaidEyes · 15/06/2022 12:41

Yes, mine turned out to be cysts.
Apparently I have a lot, particularly in one boob! Usually with lumps there's a pretty quick turnaround to get you checked out, around 2 weeks, even on the NHS. Hope yours is nothing to worry about 🤞

MargotMoon · 15/06/2022 12:41

Bloody loads - turns out I'm very "cyst-y" and have had too many trips to the Breast Clinic over the past 5 years to count. All benign

britespark1 · 15/06/2022 12:41

My friend has just had a benign cyst diagnosed and I recently had something called duct ectasia which again is benign but not something I’d heard of before. Good luck!

DonttouchthatLarry · 15/06/2022 12:42

Yes - just cysts. Know plenty of people who have also had non cancerous lumps. Try your best to not stress about it until your appointment.

RosyappleA · 15/06/2022 22:10

Thanks for all the replies and yes it is in London and they will call me in two days to book the visit to the hospital. It just scared me how easily the doctor found it as it was quite easily noticeable as she felt for it. I noticed theres still a bit of milk coming out of the breast when I squeeze. Fingers crossed it’ll be benign. Will update.

I had a biopsy whislt breastfeeding after finding a lump. It was just a cyst. Hope you're ok OP.

Crucible · 15/06/2022 22:43

3 cysts drained (separate occasions) keep us updated, I'll check back on your thread for news x

Doyoumind · 15/06/2022 22:46

Yes, twice. Both biopsied and then left alone.

ToastofLandon · 15/06/2022 22:51

Yes I had a fibroadenoma twice in my late teens, needed day surgery both times to remove them. Very common apparently
