Why do I keep getting cystitis?

BathFullOfEels · 01/01/2021 19:40

I’ve been with my partner for about a year now. We only see each other once a week or so (or not at all now that we’ve been upped to Tier 3) and have sex a lot when we see each other.

Every time after I’ve seen him I get cystitis the next day. We don’t do anything weird or rough in bed, we’ve been really strict with hygiene as I thought maybe he had dirty hands or something that kept causing it. We stopped using condoms(after we’d both had sti tests) about 3months in as I thought perhaps that was causing it somehow but I still get it.

I’ve had cystitis once in my life before this and that was before I was sexually active. I’ve learned to fend off the worst of it by drinking pints and pints of water after I’ve seen him. I saw him yesterday morning and, as it was NYE, I got distracted by other stuff and didn’t drink loads of water.

I’ve now got a fever, blood in my urine and I’m in absolute agony. I can’t keep doing this every time I see him, it’s insane.

Is it possible to have a urethra that is allergic to someone? I don’t understand it. Has anyone else had anything similar or found a way to stop it?

Do you pee straight after sex? Only thing that helped me. I used to get it when I had a distance relationship.

Regularsizedrudy · 01/01/2021 19:43

Are you peeing every time after sex? You need to straight away to sterilise your urethra

BathFullOfEels · 01/01/2021 19:55

No! I didn’t know peeing straight after sex was a thing. Thank you so much. I really hope this works. I’m so uncomfortable at the moment I was actually considering breaking up with him even though I love him to pieces because he keeps fucking up my urethra.

bellagogosdead · 01/01/2021 20:01

Seriously though, go for a wee straight after, plus drink pints of water/ tea.
Lube is also a good idea ime.

HoneyWheeler · 01/01/2021 20:02

Weeping straight after sex is a game changer. Hope it sorts itself out soon!

Regularsizedrudy · 01/01/2021 20:06

Honestly it works a charm! I’m surprised a gp has never told you this, they really should have!

StormBaby · 01/01/2021 20:08

Sorry to say but I had this with someone I was with for 2.5 years. I never managed to fix it.

Never had it in the 6 years since we split. He just irritated me in all the wrong places.

This has made me laugh so much I have tears in my eyes. Tried to read it out to DH and couldn't stop laughing!

Def wee after sex, also get some D-mannose powder (available online and from health food/supplement type places) miracle stuff for UTI's.

gifmenu · 01/01/2021 20:55

You could try taking d-mannose as a preventative prior to sex.

1940s · 01/01/2021 20:56

D mannose is literally a lifesaver. The powder form is best and pee straight Fter sex

BathFullOfEels · 01/01/2021 22:02

bellagogosdead yeah, I probably should have worded that more carefully Grin.

I’ve ordered some D mannose and I’m necking cranberry juice. I think I’m going to need antibiotics this time though as I have a fever and blood in urine Sad. All for a shag, hardly seems worth it.

I mean, weeping after sex means you’re DEFINITELY doing something wrong Grin
lissie123 · 01/01/2021 22:08

Are you on the pill? Maybe worth thinking of other contraception as I understand the pill o can increase your susceptibility to a uti.

Regularsizedrudy · 01/01/2021 22:40

You will deffo need anti bios, and cranberry juice won’t do jack shit. It’s full of sugar which is the opposite of what your pee needs right now.

Regularsizedrudy · 01/01/2021 22:41

There’s a few studies that show cranberry EXTRACT has a small benefit to preventing utility but even that is debatable.

Regularsizedrudy · 01/01/2021 22:42

UTIs even

BathFullOfEels · 01/01/2021 22:43

I’m not on contraception as he’s had a vasectomy. He’s the first person I’ve been with since I had ds2 4 years ago with caesarean delivery. I’m wondering if that’s moved things around a bit to make me more susceptible to cystitis. I’ve never got it after sex with any other partner. But then I probably haven’t ever had quite as much sex in a short space of time with any other partner either Blush

BathFullOfEels · 01/01/2021 22:44

I’d better stop on the cranberry then, thanks regularsizedrudy. I’ll stick to water for flushing through

Are you using highly scented toiletries? I found the combination of regular sex and scented toiletries gave me terrible cystitis.

Use a gentle shower gel
Cranberry extract tablets
Wee before and after sex

Weirdfan · 01/01/2021 23:29

Loads of water and take some paracetamol while you wait for the D-mannose, it helps. You may well find the D-mannose sorts it, I was getting recurrent early UTI symptoms every few days (not sex-related) for months, never developed into full on infection but was annoying and uncomfortable. I used to take one dose of D-mannose at the very first sign of anything and it would just magically go away. Did that for a few weeks and noticed it was happening less frequently and now it's been months and months and I've had nothing. Still keep some in the cupboard just in case but it seems to have cured whatever issue I was having completely. Honestly it's amazing stuff, hope yours arrives quickly.

gingerbreadfox · 01/01/2021 23:41

Have you tried the cystitis sachet medication? They are like salty granules you mix in water.

Tastes disgusting, I have to hold my nose and down it, then pour in a tiny bit more water to get the last remnants and down that too.

It really does stop the discomfort within a hour or so! Have literally saved me from agony so many times.

Bobbiepin · 02/01/2021 17:09

If you have a fever and blood in your urine you need antibiotics. Before that the other stuff and your body might be able to sort it but fever is a clear sign of infection.

Please learn from my experience with this and don't try to ride it out. Hospital is not where you want to be right now and kidney infections are agony.

Also get a general check up. I get them when my thyroid function is low, or when my iron is low too.
