Peri menopause - very heavy bleeding

MajesticWhine · 24/11/2020 19:49

Just wondered if this is normal? I'm 49. Periods are becoming a bit less regular. Last cycle was 6 weeks, now suddenly my period has come and is extremely heavy. Soaking a super plus tampon in half an hour. Clots and clumps tumbling out. My bathroom looks like a murder has taken place.
Never had anything like this in my life, not even post childbirth. Has anyone else experienced this? Is this just a part of the joy of perimenopause?

I had exactly that. Aged 53-54. Extremely heavy bleeding. Now 55 and my periods have just stopped this year. It’s really weird! I know nothing about the menopause.

Pipandmum · 24/11/2020 19:54

Not me but my mother used to flood. But you might want to get it checked out too. She ended up having a D and C and they found cancerous cells.

Soontobe60 · 24/11/2020 19:56

Same here from mid 40s. First I had Tranexamic acid, which helped a bit, but still heavy periods, just not quite as long. Then had a mirena coil fitted which did the trick within about 6 months. At the same time as having the coil fitted I had a biopsy to rule out anything sinister.

Honeyroar · 24/11/2020 19:58

Yes I get that every few months (am still regular but don’t get the ridiculously heavy ones every month). Probably started at about 47. I’m now 52. I feel completely worn out and emotional too.

BippityBobbityBoo · 24/11/2020 19:58

I had this last week, two weeks after my normal period I had the heaviest one I’ve ever had. Like you it looked like a murder scene. I lost so many hand sized clots, I was actually quite scared. I called my dr who wasn’t very interested, just told me to do a pregnancy test 🤷‍♀️. I’m 40, now wondering if this is the start of peri for me( mum was 41). Due a smear so will book this week. Nothing to add to help you OP but I was really quite scared and shocked at the blood loss

Bluntness100 · 24/11/2020 19:59

I’m fifty one and going through this now, in fact my period started yesterday and I feel exhausted I’m bleeding really heavily. I woke up in the night and had to run to the loo as I could feel it chugging out of me. It’s pure shit.

oneglassandpuzzled · 24/11/2020 20:00

I had this and it turns out I had endometrial polyps. Worth seeing if you can get an ultrasound.

BippityBobbityBoo · 24/11/2020 20:05

Yes that feeling of it almost pumping out is quite sickening, I was actually in Asda when I felt an enormous flood and had to rush home. Cried when I walked in! jumped in the shower and lost more enormous clots, I did feel quite sorry for myself 😞

BippityBobbityBoo · 24/11/2020 20:06

@oneglassandpuzzled is that the same as endometriosis?

I also have pelvic pain (still)

Lobsterquadrille2 · 24/11/2020 20:06

Yes, I'm 51 and had this for three months in a row, then it went back to normal for a couple of months and the last one was of the murder scene type too. I've had zero other menopausal symptoms.

I would get this checked out. I had this at the same age and it turned out to be fibroids. I had them removed
BippityBobbityBoo · 24/11/2020 20:07

And the bleeding lasted 12 days

MajesticWhine · 24/11/2020 20:08

Sounds like this is a reasonable common experience then? I will check it out with GP. I doubt anything is very wrong as I had an ultrasound earlier this year to investigate very tiny amount of postcoital bleeding and nothing wrong was seen then. But it's a bit of a shock. Good job I'm WFH.

@Thewoodfromthetrees thanks!
Dr was so disinterested. Would it be checked in a smear? Blood tests?

ShanghaiDiva · 24/11/2020 20:09

I had this. After sitting down for an hour was almost too sacred to get up..whoosh, absolutely horrendous. I had the Mirena fitted and periods stopped completely.

BippityBobbityBoo · 24/11/2020 20:11

@MajesticWhine sorry I’ve hijacked your thread!

How do you know you’re peri? Do you get tested? Genuine question

MajesticWhine · 24/11/2020 20:22

I don't think there is a test for it. I am assuming because of my age and my cycle being irregular.

Thewoodfromthetrees · 24/11/2020 20:22

@BippityBobbityBoo do you have private health insurance, as you can book an appointment with a gynae who may recommend a transvaginal scan

nancybotwinbloom · 24/11/2020 20:29

Mine are getting heavier and a lot more clotting. I'm 41. I think I am in peri menopause as the mood swings etc are creeping in.

BippityBobbityBoo · 24/11/2020 20:29

@MajesticWhine ok, thanks. Hope you manage to find some answers and help

@Thewoodfromthetrees no, no private cover.

DramaAlpaca · 24/11/2020 20:32

It's totally normal for your periods to change in your mid 40s. Mine went exactly as OP describes and it was miserable. After 18 months of it I saw my GP and ended up with a Mirena coil which stopped the bastard things completely and for good.

oneglassandpuzzled · 24/11/2020 22:24

It’s not 🙂 They are little growths that are usually benign but need checking post-menopause just in case.

hopeishere · 26/11/2020 21:58

I'm 50 and I've bled this month for 23 days on and off some days light then really heavy and clots. Ghastly. Am getting a mirena next week to see if it helps.

Blossomhill123 · 28/11/2020 15:49

I have experienced this last few days . I’ve been very tearful and achy a few
Days before period . I have lost so many large clots and changing tampons every 30 mins (lilletts ultra the most absorbent on market ) . Feel washed out with it . I’m 45 .

WhereAreWeNow · 03/12/2020 22:54

My periods are exactly the same - a gushing, flooding, clotted blood bath for a couple of days - and have been for a year or 2. I'm 44. They've always been heavy but now it's a whole different level. I'm about to try going on the pill to see if that helps. I'm tempted by mirena but I know some women hate it and you can't easily change your mind. At least with the pill I can stop taking it if I have problems with side effects.
