Bleeding heavily 3 weeks after novasure ablation - has anyone else had this?

kasbah72 · 22/06/2018 09:13

I had a novasure ablation almost 3 weeks ago and had zero follow up or explanations about what to expect. I have obviously done a fair amount of searching online but most stories seem to be American and a procedure done under local which does not sound anything like what I've had!

So I had bleeding and watery discharge for a few days, with a fair amount of cramping and discomfort. The pain went away after a week but the pale pink/odd tiny clots/brown bleeding discharge continued which seemed to make sense. However, after 12 days I have gone back to full on red bleeding. This does not coincide with when my period would be expected.

I am cramping a bit, feel really tired and am totally fed up with constantly bleeding or having that watery discharge. I am not allowed to wear tampons until it heals - I'm sure that is making me feel much worse as well!

Saw the GP yesterday who said that bleeding should stop nowish but it's not unheard of to go on for longer. She checked and swabbed for infection but said all looks fine on that front.

Can anyone share their recovery stories? How long did you bleed for? Did it ever stop?! What should I be expecting?

Thank you

Sorry To hear you are going through this
I was so upset mine didn’t work. He kept fobbing me off with reviews after 3 months and 6 months now I am 12 months and had to have an IUD as I couldn’t go on like that anymore I am permanently anaemic

Madis0n88 · 14/01/2019 03:07

Iud did nothing for me.
I tried that for 9 months before.
I never stopped bleeding on that and constantly felt the strings poking the outside of my vag even after they were trimmed 3 times!
It was horrible.

Katie74183 · 21/01/2019 22:18

How’s everyone doing now?

TMI but I suspect we overstepped the line about 10 posts ago 😂
my discharge is still pale yellow and reading back has made me realise it’s been over a week like this so maybe that’s a good thing? It might be a tiny bit lighter too. Not boasting you understand, just updating for today. I’m 6.5 weeks post ablation.

I haven’t had a period but my thyroid is playing up so that can stop my periods when it’s overactive so I can’t judge anything yet.

Hope you are all ok xxxxx

Madis0n88 · 21/01/2019 22:42

After those 2 major gushes I had light spotting for about 8 hours then it stopped.
If this is my new period.... I’ll take it!
Maybe next month it will be even less?
I can dream right ❤️

Katie74183 · 22/01/2019 07:00

@Madis0n88 that is amazing!!!! Lol all relative but fingers crossed.

This is what my consultant said, not many women are completely free of periods but it’s usually so so much lighter that they don’t want a hysterectomy.

I’m so pleased for you.

Fingers crossed for more good news

Katie74183 · 25/01/2019 20:25

Will the discharge and need for pads ever end?!! 🙈🙈🙈🙈

It’s pale yellow and watery and I’m now 7 weeks+ since the op.

Ladies who have had this, did you ever get a normal non period discharge back?!!!

MilkTray2018 · 25/01/2019 21:26

Hi @katie74183 I am so happy to report that I have been pad-free for 2 weeks. Bleeding, discharge, everything has stopped. I hope
It’s forever but it has been great to have stopped bleeding after over 4 months. I am 5 weeks and 1 day post ablation and I was convinced it hadn’t worked and was steeling myself for a hysterectomy. I really hope you have similar results. I had another check up on Tuesday last and consultant said bleeding post op is totally normal and that it was still very soon after it for me, so I hope you can take some reassurance from that. I am still wary though and always have a stash of pads near at hand. Nervous about my first period post op and don’t know when to expect it or what to expect so will just have to wait and see. Good luck and hope it works out for you and all the other ladies who have been posting.

Rainbowstorms · 25/01/2019 22:01

Katie74183 I have exactly the same as you, I'm 5 weeks 2 days from day of op and I'm still getting lots of yellow watery discharge, I have to wear pads or tampons 24/7 I stopped bleeding about 5 days ago, and was hoping I'd see this discharge start to subside, but no, it doesn't seem to be getting any better :(

I was told to expect bleeding on and off for a few months until things settle but they never mentioned this.

Katie74183 · 26/01/2019 10:42

@Rainbowstorms thank you for sharing. I’m sorry you are in the same boat but very grateful that it’s not just me.

The discharge is weirdly watery isn't it?!
And there’ll be nothing and then wet.

Fingers crossed it’ll dry up and resemble something normal soon!

@MilkTray2018 fingers crossed I’ll be in your boat soon!!!!

Madis0n88 · 26/01/2019 13:59

I had the watery feeling and discharge until I had my first post op period.
Then After that was fine in literally 2 days!
I’ve been dry as a bone and I don’t mean like vaginal dry I mean my normal let’s get busy no fear of discharge dry.
Now just to find a man to appreciate it again lmfao!
Hang in there ladies ❤️

Rainbowstorms · 26/01/2019 17:48

@Katie74183 yes! Sounds identical to what I'm experiencing, I see you are 7 weeks plus on from the day of your op, I'm 2 weeks behind you, please keep us updated on how you are getting on, I'm hoping this comes to an end very soon for us.
@madis0n88 how many weeks was that for you? I bled from the day of the op up until around 4 weeks ago, I'm 5 weeks 3 days since the day of the op and about 5/ 6 days with no bleeding.

Rainbowstorms · 26/01/2019 17:50

I mean I bled for around 4 weeks but still getting lots of watery discharge 5 plus weeks after op.

Madis0n88 · 26/01/2019 17:53

Surgery was November 23
Wd and light bleeding for 2 weeks then the flood gates opened for almost 2 weeks
Heavy heavy heavy then back to Wd and spotting until January 11 then I got a “period” for 2 days
2 massive heavy gushes in about 30 minutes then spotting for a day then gone
So pretty much 2 months of weird and crazy to now dry and happy vagina lol

Rainbowstorms · 26/01/2019 22:35

Thank you, that's reassuring, hopefully if I give it another 3/4 weeks it will 'dry up' I don't mind putting up with it for a few more weeks if I know there will be an end to it, I was starting to think something had gone wrong
I'm pleased that you're all sorted now :)

Katie74183 · 27/01/2019 08:05

I was thinking the same....have I traded monster long period but with 2 weeks normality every cycle for no period (which is definitely a plus) and instead relentless watery discharge 😬

Wishiwasinthevi · 12/02/2019 03:04

Hi! I’m here in the US and had Nova Sure done 31 days ago.
I found this site while looking for info on post ablation bleeding as I’m STILL bleeding and really wondering when it’s going to end.
I wanted to add a couple of things to the conversation after reading the posts from various ladies.
One person said her first post ablation procedure was as bad as her periods pre-ablation. I have read that your first period after your ablation can be extremely heavy and that’s nothing to be concerned of- it’s not a sign of a failed ablation.
And my doctor told me that as the first few periods go by that your bleeding can get lighter and lighter and even stop.
So for the ladies that said they were hoping that their pair ablation periods would do this- there is a chance!
I am just wondering how long I am going to bleed for. I had a 2 week check up and everything was fine according to my doctor.
This procedure also seems to have thrown my periods totally out of whack, atleast I guess they’re periods, it changes from watery discharge and brown blood to bright red blood, but in the 31 days I have had two of them and they’ve both been a week to a week and a half early which is unheard of for me.

Katie74183 · 13/02/2019 21:40

Hi!

Just to let you know I am now 10 weeks post ablation and the watery discharge has finally gone!!!!!

I’m still using pant liners because I’m doubting it’ll last & am so used to them after all these weeks 🤣 but the discharge is pretty much normal non period discharge.

How’s everyone else getting on?

Rainbowstorms · 15/02/2019 06:36

That's excellent news Katie74183! Mine is still the same, I'm 8 weeks 2 days since the op. I've been checking back here to see how everyone is getting on, and you have given me renewed hope!
I was really starting to think this was my life now! Sounds dramatic but it gets me down, I'm still having to use pads/tampons all the time, even to bed, I'll give it a couple more weeks, then I'm going to see my GP.
I'm so pleased you are finally back to normal :)

AH1971 · 23/10/2019 11:35

Hello wondering if someone can advise, I decided after years of heavy period (but no pain) to have the endometrial ablation, wow sure I have made the wrong decision, gutted, contracted an infection and was given the wrong antibiotics for a week, so 2 week post op was given the right antibiotics 3 weeks post op the infection has gone, I have still crampy pains and been bleeding every day since the ablation I am now 4 weeks post op and totally fed up can anyone advise will it get better is this normal, I have been discharged from the hospital and don't know what to do :(

Beachgirl19 · 30/10/2019 19:37

Hi WishIwasintheVI I was wondering how things ended up for you? I am 16 days post op from a Minerva ablation and have been bleeding quite heavily for 12 days. My doctor has no answers, doesn't seem concerned but also says this isn't normal. I would love to hear a success story from the US.

Ps: I too wish I was in the VI, particularly St John lol

Achaney37 · 17/12/2019 01:06

Hello Ladies! I had my ablation on 11/25/19. The first 3 days I had lots of cramps and pain with a week of mild bleeding. The second week I had no more blood just liquid brown/pink discharge. I was hopeful at this point that the bleeding had stopped but alas no. I have been bleeding/spotting every day since and Im at the start of week four. Before my ablation I had a 54 day period and became anaemic down to 7.3 hemoglobin (on the verge of needing a blood transfusion). What worries me more than the spotting is the pain, I went from only needing pain meds once a day in the second week to almost taking the max dose of Ibuprofen and Tylenol daily. I went for a follow up with my OB on the 18th day post op and she said everything seemed normal and we needed more time for healing and that she only saw "old blood" in my uterus. Everything i read online talks about the discharge going on for a few weeks to months I just dont read too much about the cramping and pain continuing. My cramps hurt more now than during my previouse (to the ablation) menstrual cycles. Anyone else experience something similar?

Momtotwo47 · 21/12/2019 05:34

I had my ablation 3 and 1/2 weeks ago in office.....took 10 minutes and don't remember a thing. First I had watery brownish discharge for a few days, then it lightened up. A week and a half later I was bleeding and have been on and off ever since. The cramps are worse now than right after and I am so frustrated. My uterus has never been kind to me, so I can only think the worst right now, but I am thankful that I am not the only one.....crossing my fingers!!!

PrettyBland · 18/03/2020 21:20

I know this post is old, but hoping someone is still around to help me figure this out.

I'm an American, had a polyp removed, a d&c, and a hydrothermal ablation done on 1/29/2020. I had some discharge/bleeding for about 4 days after, then nothing for about 5 weeks. Then 15 days ago, I started bleeding, not much at first, but now it's heavy. I'm passing clots that could fill the palm of my hand. I'm pretty much back to where I started. My Dr tells me it's "probably" normal but will see me if I want to make an appointment. Well I also just had sinus surgery, and want to give it a few days before I make an appointment with my gynecologist.

After reading through your experiences, I'm thinking what I am going through may be a normal part of the healing. I have also read elsewhere that some woman will experience heavy/clotty periods for the first few cycles and it may take 6 months to see results.

So, day 15 of heavy bleeding with large clots about 7 weeks post ablation. For those that experienced something similar, how long did it take for your cycle to even out or stop completely?

Lisaav · 17/07/2023 16:27

I'm going through this right now and was so thrilled to find this forum. I know this post is quite old but I'd love to hear how everyone made out. I had my ablation on 6/23. The first week just light discharge. The next few weeks were active bleeding and cramps. I feel like it's getting worse not better. I go for my post op tomorrow. I know it's only been 3+ weeks but everyone I know that had it done had little to no bleeding.

PrettyBland · 17/07/2023 19:37

I ended up with a hysterectomy at the end of August 2020 unfortunately. My bleeding didn't stop. I bled from the date of this post (3/2020) until the hysterectomy in August. I became severely anemic, losing hair, heart palpitations, extreme exhaustion - couldn't leave the house because the bleeding was so heavy - clotting the size of my fist. I was miserable. I had to find a 2nd dr because the dr that performed the ablation wanted to do it again and that's a HUGE no-no. Besides that, I shouldn't have had one to begin with due to having a tubal ligation and 2 c-sections. The dr didn't take my history into consideration at all. The new dr who performed the hysterectomy said my uterus was folded in half from the last csection I had and that was another reason I shouldn't have had the ablation. Feel free to email me if you'd like to discuss more since this thread is kinda dead lyndak76 @ prodigy(dot)net
