Bleeding heavily 3 weeks after novasure ablation - has anyone else had this?

kasbah72 · 22/06/2018 09:13

I had a novasure ablation almost 3 weeks ago and had zero follow up or explanations about what to expect. I have obviously done a fair amount of searching online but most stories seem to be American and a procedure done under local which does not sound anything like what I've had!

So I had bleeding and watery discharge for a few days, with a fair amount of cramping and discomfort. The pain went away after a week but the pale pink/odd tiny clots/brown bleeding discharge continued which seemed to make sense. However, after 12 days I have gone back to full on red bleeding. This does not coincide with when my period would be expected.

I am cramping a bit, feel really tired and am totally fed up with constantly bleeding or having that watery discharge. I am not allowed to wear tampons until it heals - I'm sure that is making me feel much worse as well!

Saw the GP yesterday who said that bleeding should stop nowish but it's not unheard of to go on for longer. She checked and swabbed for infection but said all looks fine on that front.

Can anyone share their recovery stories? How long did you bleed for? Did it ever stop?! What should I be expecting?

Thank you

Have you tried the various prescription drugs that help?

I would be really bad 4 days, heavy for a further 3 and often flood during the night. All the drugs did was delay the flooding!

CottonSock · 30/12/2018 17:53

@RandomMess. No not yet. A bit nervous as history of depression and weight gain. Also it didn't work for my mum, who ended up having ablation and said it changed her life. I'm not keen on coil either for various reasons.

RandomMess · 30/12/2018 17:56

There are a few different things to try drug wise and they be enough to help. Do you take ibuprofen, that will reduce blood loss?

I didn't get on with hormonal contraceptives either, nor mirena. My Mum has to have a hysterectomy for heavy periods and anaemia too!

CottonSock · 30/12/2018 18:03

Thanks @RandomMess , yes trying ibuprofen. Sometimes I think it's helped, but a bit hit and miss.

MilkTray2018 · 30/12/2018 18:26

@cottonsock I know exactly how that feels. I went from being like that one day in every cycle to having random days of totally unpredictable flooding. In total I bled for 55 days before I sought proper help and by that stage I was bleeding really heavily every day. In my experience norethisterone was a wonder drug but apparently it’s effects lessen over time so it’s only good short term. At the minute I am alsmost as bad as I was pre-eblation but 🤞 things improve soon.

Hi ladies,

Well after 15 days of brown and pink discharge it appears to be slowing (but shhhhh I’m scared that as I’ve typed it I will now be back to square one). I’m now 25 days post op.

Also, for the lady worried about work - this counts as an operation so there shouldn’t be an issue getting a sick note. I had two weeks on mine and because of Christmas have had a bit more time as well as holiday which has helped. I could have struggled on without but don’t underestimate how exhausting healing is.

Will keep you all posted.

I had NovaSure done on the 18th December plus clips. The pain was horrendous. I'd had a lap done in June and it wasn't this bad. Pain lasted 8 days with heavyish WD, only to wake up this morning (31st) with period like bleeding with period like symptoms! I feel like I got cheated Sad.
I'm in Australia

Laniakea · 30/12/2018 19:58

I had mine done exactly a year ago. It was very painful afterwards (done under GA) - I had pethidine then tramadol but honestly felt horrendous for about a week.

I had moderate bleeding watery discharge & days with red bleeding for two weeks. Then a week of being fine and then a period - about 50% as bad as before the ablation.

The next 3-4 periods were each lighter than the one before, then a couple with just spotting & the last three months i’ve had no bleeding at all.

Overall it has been brilliant (life changing) but it took a few months to settle down & the first weeks were awful (not at all like what i’d expected from reading online).

MilkTray2018 · 30/12/2018 20:22

Thanks for advice re sick note @Katie74183
Hope things have finally settled down for you post procedure.

Katie74183 · 30/12/2018 20:34

Thank you so much for sharing your experience @Lanaikea. There is hope for us all.

And Milktray2018, you are most welcome. If you can take more time off do.

I imagine most of us were probably quite anaemic at the point of surgery so it’ll also take time for the iron stores to replenish but that will help us to feel better too. I’ve been on supplements for 7 months and while I’ve not deteriorated further I’ve also not improved. You just can keep up with all the loss every few weeks.

One thing I will say ladies is that I will certainly be heading for a hysterectomy if this doesn’t work significantly; I cannot carry on worrying about floods and leaks any more.

I’m 40 btw.

Katie74183 · 01/01/2019 08:42

Tempted fate clearly.....it was even heavier yesterday 🙄😡

17 days and counting since this started. 27 since op.

Humph.

Hope everyone else has improved

MilkTray2018 · 01/01/2019 10:14

Katie that’s awful. I am 15 days post op and cannot go on bleeding like this so I have managed to bring my review appointment forward to this Friday. I will let you know how that goes. It is all so wearing, isn’t it?

Groovester · 01/01/2019 10:32

Just wanted to say thank you for this thread. I am currently waiting my ablation and it’s a comfort (believe it or not) to hear real stories about it. Didn’t think it would be painful so will have to gear myself up for it.

Katie74183 · 01/01/2019 10:48

@Groovester hope we aren’t scaring you. I must admit i wish I’d been a bit more prepared for the post op period in terms of what to expect.

And @Milktray2018 glad you’ve done that. Sounds hideous. Mine is not as heavy as yours so I should just crack on but I’m so fed up of hopeful knicker checking thinking it may have stopped but no!!

Happy New Year ladies 🙈

MilkTray2018 · 01/01/2019 11:00

@Groovester Good luck with your procedure. I know ladies whose lives have been transformed by having the procedure and hopefully that will be the case for you and for all of the rest of us eventually.
Like @katie74183 I wish I had been more informed about what can happen post procedure. That’s why I have found this thread so helpful and I am grateful to all the ladies who have shared their stories.
Happy New Year to you all too 🍾🎉2️⃣0️⃣1️⃣9️⃣

Madis0n88 · 01/01/2019 13:04

Well I’m on day 4 of NO PADS!
Hang in there.
I’m sure it’s not forever but I’ll take it.
Now if it is forever I will be the happiest chick on the planet but I’m going to remain sensible LOL
Hugs ladies
And I bled like a stuffed Pig for weeks!
❤️

Groovester · 01/01/2019 13:41

Not scared, no. To be honest, anything different from my current ongoing situation will be something. I’m on norethisterone constantly otherwise I just bleed badly all the time. Norethistetone gives me really bad headaches. So it’s heavy flooding/clots/bleeding or a chronic migraine. What joy!

Katie74183 · 04/01/2019 21:18

Evening.... update from me is no real change. It’s been 30 days since the ablation and I’ve still got dark brown discharge which sometimes feels a bit gushy and occasionally contains red blood. I’ve had this for 20 days now.

I’ve gone back to tampons because it’s been more than 4 weeks since the op and I cannot face any more pads right now.

On the positive side, at some point I should have had a period and I’ve not had any bleeding like I was having. However, it would be nice to have a normal discharge at some point!

How’s everyone else getting on in 2019?

MilkTray2018 · 05/01/2019 11:46

Hi @Katie74183 I think we just have to keep hanging in there. It’s frustrating though, and I totally get you about being done with pads - I hate the bloody things and have spent a fortune on them over the last 4 months. I went back to my consultant yesterday. My bleeding has slowed down over the last couple of days (but not enough to go padless and I’m only 16 days post ablation so a bit early for tampons yet). The consultant said it’s too early to tell yet if the procedure was successful and to give it a couple of cycles before deciding on the next step (hysterectomy). She prescribed more norethisterone in case I have another bad bleed. I have absolutely no idea where I am in my cycle and when I should expect a period so it really is a waiting game.l and a nervous one at that. The fact that my bleeding has eased is good I hope. I won’t tolerate much more though and will be going ahead with a hysterectomy soon if things don’t settle. I just can’t/won’t let bleeding dictate much more of my life.

Madis0n88 · 13/01/2019 20:32

Ok so fitbit says period is due tomorrow.
I’m standing in my kitchen and damn it be i gushed through my pants
Wtf!
I assume this ablation is a fail
Fml
I’m gushing all over
Anyone else have this happen with first post op period!
HALP!!!

Madis0n88 · 13/01/2019 20:33

Oh with no warning either.
Just BAM!

Katie74183 · 13/01/2019 20:55

Oh my Lord!!!! You poor thing. Is that what it was like before? It might be it lasts for a shorter time? Little consolation though. So sorry.

I’m still on the brown/pink/yellow/yuck daily discharge that has mini gushes. I’m 5 and a half weeks post ablation and this has been happening every day for 28 days. It is slightly more yellow at the mo but no idea if that is significant.

Madis0n88 · 13/01/2019 21:14

Yes my periods were hell for many many years
I’m so scared it did not work
I am under a unsermountable amount of stress

MilkTray2018 · 13/01/2019 23:25

@madis0n88 I really feel for you. That is what I fear too. I can totally understand the stress you are under. Have you had your review appt yet? The reason I ask is because I brought mine forward and it did give me a bit of an insight into what happened during my procedure and why I was still bleeding the way I was.
The consultant told me that I would know for sure in a couple of cycles if it had worked or not and to come back to her if/when I wanted a hysterectomy. She did give me a supply of norethisterone in case I start to bleed heavily again or during my next period (still have no idea where I am in my cycle). Having gone through the hell of bad periods for years you must be so devastated to seem to be back to square one. Maybe it will last for a shorter time? Even if it does though, you couldn’t be coping with that no warning flooding. That’s awful and so stressful. I really hope things improve for you soon.

PookieDo · 13/01/2019 23:53

My novasure did not work. Apparently any tissue not ablated can regrow. I am back where I started. I knew it didn’t work after 4 weeks when I had a completely normal flooding period.
I either have full hysto or IUD so I have gone back to IUD
