Anyone else planning to participate in this between 23-25 January? Thought it might be good to share what we see. It's just recording what you see in your garden during one hour during that time period.

I may actually do it in my own garden and then pop to my Dad's to do it there too.

Yes, I'll be participating. Received my RSPB big garden bird watch pack today and have been keeping my feeders well stocked in readiness 🙂. Must dig out last year's log to compare. I'll post my findings here when done 👍

kinkytoes · 20/01/2026 21:00

Thank you for the reminder.

I do this every year. Love it!

Festina · 20/01/2026 22:08

I’m in! I anticipate a repeat of last year (and every year before that) with Siskin being the top bird, but you never know!

That's very pretty 😍

DiggoryVenn · 24/01/2026 13:25

@RainbowZebraWarrior lovely, I also really like your metal woodpecker.

It’s raining so hard here (south west) that there are currently no birds in my garden. Will try later.

This is so often the way @DiggoryVenn . I joked to my DH earlier this week that as it’s the bird count weekend, bad weather is almost guaranteed 😂

I’ve been out all day, so nothing has been counted yet. Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Gorgeous birdfeeder @RainbowZebraWarrior 😍 Your birds are lucky!

JenniferandJuniper · 24/01/2026 19:32

Love doing this every year, will be observing tomorrow.

MrsSPenguins · 24/01/2026 23:01

Lovely day here for January so did this today whilst gardening and lots of birds including our regular robin.

DiggoryVenn · 25/01/2026 09:03

So I had a very poor result yesterday:
2 blackbirds, 3 blue tits, 1 sparrow, 1 wren, 1 blackcap and 1 pigeon.

However, if the weather isn't too bad later, I will do it again from my Dad's garden. He is much more rural so gets much more interesting birds.

I’ve organised for my scout group to do it as a family event. Just hoping the rain holds off 🤞

Festina · 25/01/2026 10:10

I’m 10 minutes into my count and 20+ jackdaws just showed up. I stopped counting them after 20 😄

Blackcap is a good spot @DiggoryVenn!

Indianajet · 25/01/2026 10:14

Robin, three bluetits, four sparrows, 2 blackbirds, two crows and a pigeon- my usual visitors.

Snugglemonkey · 25/01/2026 10:16

We are currently on it. So far 2 robins, 2 blue tits, 1 magpie. Only 10 mins in though!

Jewelanemone · 25/01/2026 10:16

We did this yesterday, however next door's Maine Coone decided to stretch out on our lawn for most of the hour 😕 We did see some blue tits and long-tailed tits, though, so that was good.

CBAwithallthethings · 25/01/2026 10:33

Our garden was very quiet yesterday but did it this morning and had more visitors.
4 house sparrows
3 blue tit
3 wood pigeon
2 blackbird
1 collared dove
1 robin

MrsSPenguins · 25/01/2026 10:49

Our Maine Coon was indoors but we were gardening with our 3 silkie chickens wandering round and could hear lots more birds in our trees but could not see what they were, lots of chirping and singing as we dug up ground and revealed worms. But we did have a flock of 23 crows appear so that added quite a bit to the bird tally. Though didn't know how to answer is this usual as I haven't seen that group before but DH reckons he's seen them a lot and some of our regulars appeared, some didn't. I put yes but probably should have put no.

Festina · 25/01/2026 11:45

The results are in and to no one’s surprise Jackdaws secured top spot here. The finches put in a very good effort with siskins coming second (counted 13) and bullfinches third (4)

@MrsSPenguins if you get big flocks from time to time, it makes sense to me to tick yes for that question. It may not happen all the time, but it’s not unusual for your garden.

I’m doing it. This morning my bird feeder had a visit from a long tailed tit family - loads of them! Then the robin arrived and saw them off.

Today I’ve also had my resident dunnocks, black birds and robin. Had a chiff chaff. I have approximately 4000 jackdaws and some collared doves.

here’s a photo of the family of long tailed tits if you can make them out!
