What was the last book you read that really got to your heart?

Mine is Project Hail Mary, I didn’t know anything about the story before I read it, just the cover blurb. I really, really enjoyed it and it really tugged at my heart strings. I won’t say anymore about it as I don’t want to give any spoilers away.

Remember me, its a true story, i cry reading it.

I recently re read Silas Marner which I love and it didn’t disappoint - such a simple
but lovely story.

I haven’t finished yet but I’m currently reading A Year of Marvellous Ways by Sarah Winman and it is just lovely. The two main characters are a bit unusual and there are some lovely moments between them.

'Rabbit stew and a penny or two' by Maggie Smith-Bendell - the memoirs of a Romani girl growing up travelling the roads of Somerset, Wiltshire and the South West of England during the latter half of the last century. I saw Maggie speak at an event last autumn and was inspired by her story, especially as the locations are in the area where I live.

This book stretches plausibly. The sheer volume and severity of the abuse Jude survives defies probability. And who goes around adopting 30 year old men!

A Long Way Home by Saroo Brierley - what a story - about getting lost in the streets of India as a small child and how his life unfolds thereafter.

The Radium Girls by Kate Moore. It was both heart-breaking and enraging.

A Fortunate Life by Albert Facey. He wrote it as an old man about his childhood and youth in Western Australia on the Goldfields, droving cattle on the huge pastoral stations and later at Galipoli. He seemed to genuinely believe he had been fortunate even though it was all unimaginably tough. The prose is so simple and spare because he was completely self taught and just says it exactly as it was.

If Russia Wins by Carlo somebody. Just read it this week on a plane. It's an academic scenario grounded in research by a guy who was senior in Nato until recently but reads like a thriller. It's short and my son and I both read it in one sitting and were left genuinely shaken up. Feels very real.

Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton. Beautiful book.

Everything Anne Tyler writes.

'The Midnight Library' really got me

I’m just reading Clock Dance, it’s beautiful. I read A Spool of Blue Thread and Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant before this and enjoyed them both, but this is my favourite. Any recommendations for my next read?

The Correspondent was just lovely and also heartbreaking. I generally fall asleep reading - not with this! I had to switch to something else at night because I was struggling to put it down and go to sleep.

Everything by Sarah Winman, Tin Man, When God was a Rabbit and Still Life are my favourites.
Also The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt

I’ve just read My Friends by Fredrik Backman, I’d highly recommend it

‘When the cranes fly south’ - beautiful book. I’m very much a ‘stiff upper lip’ type of person, and don’t really get emotional, but that book will stay with me for a long time.,
