Really struggling to like this . Have had to extend my library loan of it 3 times. I am just not getting the love. I am over halfway through and finding it uninteresting. I don't hate it, so am persevering. Will it get better?

I didn’t enjoy this book that much. I’d just return it and find something unputdownable.

FlutterShite · 07/06/2026 13:49

I was about halfway through (having been reading on and off for months), when my cat knocked the book off the coffee table, the bookmark fell out, and I had absolutely no idea where I’d left the story so never went back. I felt like I should love it but like you said, OP, I just wasn’t interested in reading more.

sakura06 · 07/06/2026 13:52

I absolutely adored it, but life is too short to read a book you’re not enjoying! Give up on it!

Pinkissmart · 07/06/2026 13:53

I loved it but I loved it right away.
Life is too short to slog through books you don’t like. There are so many good books out there.
I give you permission to stop 😁

Abouteffingtime · 07/06/2026 14:12

Argh but I HATE not finishing a book. I felt the same about Orbital last year, didnt hate it but took me ages to read, which is astoundibg given how short it is!

OP posts:
Abouteffingtime · 07/06/2026 14:13

To be fair, I liked it more at the start but am finding the mid section tedious. I dont care about the games, I saw a post where soneone said it wouldnt matter if you were interested in gaming, but for me I think it does

OP posts:
Santasbigredbobblehat · 07/06/2026 14:14

Took me three goes to get into it, and I did like it, but it’s a far fetched story in some respects and perhaps not worth the hype.

GrumpySparkler · 07/06/2026 14:15

I loved it OP! But you don't. Chuck it back. Life's too short.
FWIW I hated orbital after picking it up thinking it would be a great, quick read. After about 2 weeks and 30 pages it was chucked at the nearest charity shop. And I don't regret it 😂

Wofflewaffle · 07/06/2026 14:16

It was ok 🤷‍♀️ I felt very emotionally manipulated at some points, though maybe that’s what writing is. I did finish it but would rush to recommend it.

WhatNextImScared · 07/06/2026 14:16

I loved it, but please don’t keep going if it’s not for you! So many great books out there, and only so much life. I made this my resolution a couple of years ago. Don’t waste on something that’s not enjoyable or engaging to you

This is interesting as I came to it absolutely hating gaming and found that this is the only thing I’ve ever read that made me understand why games are such an important cultural experience - even though it’s not something I’ll ever share in personally

Robertplantgoddess · 07/06/2026 21:14

Thought it was ok but only ok. Not into gaming and probably too old to understand some of the points /references made. Reminded me of yellowface in the way it was written and every one else appearing to absolutely love it whilst Im thinking- ok ive finished it - i must be missing something.

Divebar2021 · 07/06/2026 21:18

I worked my way through the New York Times list and I couldn’t believe this was in the top 10. Incredibly overrated to my
mind… not bad but not excellent either.

Abouteffingtime · 07/06/2026 21:20

@Robertplantgoddess I know to avoid Yellowface too then!

toastofthetown · 07/06/2026 21:20

I loved it but if it’s not for you then stop. I used to feel that way about DNFing but now I’ll happily stop a boom which I’m not getting anything from. There’s way more books to read in life than I’ll have time for so why waste time reading a book you aren’t getting anything out of. Maybe consider it an extended break and maybe later in life you’ll pick it up and connect with it more later.

I agree! I must preferred Tomorrow to Yellowface but they’re similar in style and both in the category of overrated and didn’t really enjoy for me. I think Tomorrow is too long and protracted. I agree with a previous comment how it helps to understand how important gaming is to that community as it’s a world I have zero interest in at all.

I did finish it, but didn't understand the love for it. My new year's resolution 5 years ago was to stop reading/watching anything I wasn't actually enjoying and it's the only one I've stuck with. It's the best decision I've made. Give it up, go and get something better. Have you read Still Life by Sarah Winman?

Flamingosareflummoxed · 08/06/2026 09:34

I loved it

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 08/06/2026 09:35

I really enjoyed it, but I didn’t read it, I listened.

if you are loathe to leave it unfinished, could you pick up where you left off and finish it as an audiobook?

Amandaholdenstits · 08/06/2026 09:52

I felt exactly the same way about the book, OP. But - I loved Yellowface. Personally I don't see the comparison between it and TTT.

ADogRocketShip · 08/06/2026 11:52

Took me a while to get into as I never really got that 'hooked' feeling. But I did finish it, and parts pulled me in more than others. I enjoyed second half more.

sunshinehappydays · 08/06/2026 11:59

Ugh I didn’t like that book at all and gave up about a third of the way through. I love books and reading. I read actual books, Kindle books and listen to audio books. But life is too short to slog through a book you don’t enjoy. I give up on books really quickly now if they don’t grab me. There’s too many good books to suffer a bad one. No one will give you points for finishing a book you don’t like.

Mary28 · Yesterday 13:30

I read it quickly and liked it but certainly nothing ground breaking about it and certainly not a book that enriched my life or one I'd force myself to read if I wasn't enjoying it. If you aren't feeling it skip it. Life's too short.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · Yesterday 18:23

I loved it to start with, found it very rambling in the middle and thought the ending was weak.

VividDeer · Yesterday 18:25

I really enjoyed it, but I often quit a book so don't slog on!
