Really struggling to like this . Have had to extend my library loan of it 3 times. I am just not getting the love. I am over halfway through and finding it uninteresting. I don't hate it, so am persevering. Will it get better?

I hated it, couldn’t connect to the characters AT ALL.

Stick it on the did not finish pile and move on would be my advice.

Abouteffingtime · 05/07/2026 14:47

@ImWearingPantaloons see above 😂 Slogged on, finished it. Didnt improve!

Over all, I enjoyed it but not sure I can fully see what others can in it. I think I mainly read it because I didn't want to miss out! I could see the gaming element and got that more than I thought I would as the idea of fictitious worlds appeals to me, but the relationships didn't always come alive for me. It was too long I think, that was the main problem for me, but I suppose it was ambitious in what it was trying to achieve and I respect that.

I loved this book so much. Funny how it has elicited such strong opinions. Very marmite.

DaftNoodle · 05/07/2026 19:28

I absolutely loved it and was crying my eyes out on a flight back from Spain in parts!! lol! I just got so invested in the characters and I’m not sure why as it isn’t my usual read.

durdledoris · 05/07/2026 19:32

I read this too but didn't get the hype at all. You haven't missed much op.

Anothernameretired · 05/07/2026 19:33

I absolutely loved it! Stories about friendship are rare and I thought it was brilliant from the very first moment.
But if you're not liking it, it doesn't get better.

I've read it twice and looking forward to reading it again in a couple of years.

mumisfull · 05/07/2026 19:39

I enjoyed it when I read it when it first came out but I can’t for the life of me remember any of the story or characters! Obviously didn’t leave a lasting impression.
I’m definitely in the DNF if you don’t like something camp. The Blue Sisters was one I just couldn’t get through. I thought it was pretentious. Also, I’d just finished Hello Beautiful which is also about sisters, and was a far far more wonderful book.

Echobelly · 05/07/2026 19:46

I enjoyed it but if you're not invested in the characters I imagine it wouldn't do much for you!

Nor me. I finished it, only because so many people were raving about it and I felt I must be missing something. I have no interest in gaming whatsoever, I dont think that helped. Dont be put of the author though. I had The Storied Life of AK Fikry on my kindle for months. I didnt want to read it because I hated Tomorrow and it was fabulous.

Pemba · 10/07/2026 09:48

I loved it. Got DD and her partner to read it too, they both loved it as well. Even though DD's partner is really into gaming and I (as a 60 plus woman) am (unsurprisingly) not, I still found it fascinating.

Argh but I HATE not finishing a book. I felt the same about Orbital last year, didnt hate it but took me ages to read, which is astoundibg given how short it is!

Orbital was TERRIBLE

I did enjoy Tomorrow x 3 though

WhatNextImScared · Yesterday 08:41

I absolutely loved it, but there are lots of books people love that I can’t get. The Paper Palace is one that springs to mind. I just left it after many attempts.

I didn’t much care for The Paper Palace, the popular one that was absolute garbage for me was Where The Crawdads Sing.

@EineReiseDurchDieZeit oh Im so pleased you didnt like Orbital. It took me so long to read and its SO short!!
