How many books do you read in a month?

OnceaReaderNeveraReader · 12/01/2026 10:47

Do you read one at the time or sometimes start several books in the same period? And how many books do you normally buy and keep in your "to read" pile?

Inspired by my previous post, want to try and make an active effort to read more. I find myself buying books occasionally but never read them and having these piles of unread books by my bed actually puts me off!

I usually have 3 books on the go at once. One is an audiobook for listening to on dog walks, one is a physical book which I read during the day (mainly at meal times) the third is my kindle which I read in bed at night. The speed at which I get through them depends on how gripping they are. I try to make sure they’re all quite different genres otherwise the stories and characters get all mixed up in my brain!
If you find it hard to make yourself sit down and read regularly then I would recommend trying some audiobooks that you can listen to whilst cleaning/cooking/commuting

Hellohah · 12/01/2026 11:33

I only read one book at a time. I know there are posters on here who think this is crazy. But I have a busy life and don't really have the mental capacity to read more than one book at a time.

I read about 80 books a year, but not necessarily 6/7 a month. I tend to read far less in the summer months than I do the rest of the year. I'm already on book 5 for January.

What books have you got unread? Maybe we can convince you to pick one of them up if any of us have read them?

DisplayPurposesOnly · 12/01/2026 11:49

One book at a time. Im a fast reader (so prefer series) but speed depends on size of book, how easy it is, how interested i am. And I work full-time which annoyingly cuts into my reading time, dammit.

Currently

  • wading thru The Egoist, finding it very hard going as Im out of practice with that language & style. I put it down when a better offer comes along so haven't stuck to my OBAAT preference
  • about halfway thru The Rose Field over about 10 days which is quite slow going for me
  • recently completed the Ruth Galloway series, the shorter ones I would read in a day.
tinyspiny · 12/01/2026 13:05

I only read on my kindle before I go to sleep and I only read one book at a time , last year I read 72 books so 6 per month .

Ineffable23 · 12/01/2026 13:08

I don't usually have more than 2-3 on the go and quite often only 1.

I read about 70 books a year. I started reading a lot more books once I decided that reading anything was a hell of a lot better than doom scrolling and stopped trying to encourage myself to want to e.g. read a Russian novel after a long day work and instead consumed a nice low key murder mystery.

NerrSnerr · 12/01/2026 13:14

I sometimes have a few on the go. I have one on Audible that I listen to when out walking or on the bus, I have one other on the go at the moment which I read when kids are in activities and in bed. I might add in a third if the bedtime one is a big hardback that I don’t want to lug around. I have read 3 so far this year.

NerrSnerr · 12/01/2026 13:15

I also read to my 11 year old every night so have another one on the go.

Chasingsquirrels · 12/01/2026 13:31

1 at a time (kindle), although I do also have a physical technical one (bridge for beginners) on the go atm.

150 last year, so 10-15 a month. I've read 6 so far this month.
Last year was the most I've read in recent years.

I tend to "buy" anything free I fancy from my daily Bookbub email, I've got 1,400+ unread atm.

ForLoveNotMoney · 12/01/2026 14:15

1 at a time but I’m currently off sick so have a lot of time on my hands! I’ve started His and Hers today and am already about half way through. It’s my 7th book this month so far but like I said, I’m off sick and on enforced rest. I am not always this prolific!

Every bit of this is exactly what I do.

I was reading very little after my kids were born and Clare Chambers was great for getting back into the swing of it because they’re an easy read but not at all trashy.

somewhereintheworld · 12/01/2026 14:23

I read about probably three a month depending on how good they are. I always read in bed. Someone on here recommended The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Cristie, so I'm reading that atm and I must confess I have no idea who dunnit so far 😂. Enjoying it though so thanks to whoever recommended it.

APatternGrammar · 12/01/2026 14:35

If you don’t enjoy reading, there’s no reason you have to do it. Have you tried audiobooks?
At times I have read a novel a day for a month or two, but if I felt like I had to do it, I wouldn’t.

Yuja · 12/01/2026 14:45

Anything from 0-3 depending on what else is going on in my life. If I’m busy at work I read less but if things are stress free I can get through loads as I relax more

chickensandbees · 12/01/2026 14:49

I usually have 4 or so on the go:
1 audio
1 on my kindle which I read in bed
1 physical fiction
1 or more physical non fiction which I dip in and out of
I read about 8 or 9 a month, 111 last year.

Newyearnewmewoooop · 12/01/2026 14:51

1 at a time, probably around 8 a month

Teenagerantruns · 12/01/2026 14:54

One book at a time.
Im not working atm due to caring responsibilities, so can read one book in a day or two.
I have kindle unlimited so sometimes l start and then abandone a book if its rubbish.

Wow! I thought I was a prolific reader until I read your post. 😁

I have a kindle which I read at night and probably average about a book every 10 days. Although currently reading 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami and feel like I’ve been reading it forever!

CatWithThreeLegs · 12/01/2026 16:34

Often I will have an audiobook whilst I'm doing chores and, if I'm reading a physical book then I may have another on my kindle so I can read in bed. The kindle book might then be something non-fiction so it doesn't matter if I only read a few pages.

Therewerelions · 12/01/2026 16:50

I have read 4 books this month so far but this can vary.
If I begin a series of books I like then I can read one every two days or sometimes faster.
I only read one book at a time.

whippetwoman · 13/01/2026 14:05

I have four on the go at once.
Like previous posters I have an audiobook for driving and walking to work, plus on-lead dog walking.
I have a physical book on the go and then Kindle book that I read in bed.
I also always have a book I only read at work on my Kindle app on my laptop. Of course this is for my breaktime and I definitely would not read it at any other time ever...

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 13/01/2026 15:59

1 regular book and 1 audiobook at a time. I’ve read quite excessively this month not sure why usually it’s maybe 7 a month and this month I’ve read 12 so far mainly because I’ve been ill and its given me something to do but also because I’ve got nothing to watch

ClawsandEffect · 13/01/2026 16:21

2 or 3 a month for pleasure. 2ish a month for work. So probably around 5 books a month.

WatchingWongFilms · 13/01/2026 16:32

I can get through anywhere between 4 and 10 books a month because I'm lucky enough to have a lot of free time, and not so lucky to have insomnia. So, it really just depends on how long the book is or how often I let myself get distracted by a new show (not every often these days, TV doesn't seem to be made for me anymore).

Usually read on Kindle and usually have one fiction and one non-fiction on the go. I'll also sometimes listen to an audiobook when walking the dog or having a long bath.

RichardTemplethatbeatingRythm · 13/01/2026 16:36

2 -3 a month of new books if I haven't any new ones I'll read three or four of older ones on the go at same time.

Nomedshere · 13/01/2026 18:04

One book at a time. Currently on book 7 of the month
