How many books do you read in a month?

Do you read one at the time or sometimes start several books in the same period? And how many books do you normally buy and keep in your "to read" pile?

Inspired by my previous post, want to try and make an active effort to read more. I find myself buying books occasionally but never read them and having these piles of unread books by my bed actually puts me off!

My stats from last year show that I read between 2 -7 books a month, averaging 4.25 per month.
The number increased once I made a conscious decision to stop watching tv. With no tv time 7 books per month should normally be achievable unless I have a big classic on the go. I don’t like rushing my reading so I’d be happy with 4 books a month while reading big classics.
I normally have one or two physical books that I read daily and if I get into a reading slump I just change the book and read something else for a while. In addition I have one audiobook to listen to on the school run (long drive twice a day).
I also have a separate „bath time” book that I read in the bath every evening - 15ish minutes every day. I normally manage to get one extra book a month this way.

Between 10 and 20 per month. Usually 2-3 on the go at once.

I read about probably three a month depending on how good they are. I always read in bed. Someone on here recommended The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Cristie, so I'm reading that atm and I must confess I have no idea who dunnit so far 😂. Enjoying it though so thanks to whoever recommended it.

Have you finished it? What did you think?

That's a lot! How many hours a month does it work out as?

I have no idea :-) I typically read a book quicker than kindle estimates I will, and I read everywhere that I would otherwise scroll a phone eg whilst cooking or commuting.

I read more at different times ( in the winter, on holiday, read a whole book waiting for the bloody RAC just before Christmas) and some books take much longer than others, so there isn’t a set monthly number, but I read 150 books last year, so I suppose it averages out about 12 a month.

I find rereading old favourites is quite a good way out of the odd reading slump.

It's pretty impressive however you do it!

I read between 5 and 8 a month.

Between 8 and 10 a month. I also have an audible and a physical on the go simultaneously. I’ve read one 800 pager this month and I’m on a 1000 pager now, so fewer this month.

One book at a time, always on kindle. Usually have an audiobook on the go aswell. I read a lot, almost 250 books last year excluding audiobooks, think I listened to about 20 of them.

pippistrelle · 25/01/2026 12:51

My circumstances are such that I have time and space to read and/or listen to a lot of books. But I consciously increase that time by trying not to do much mindless internet scrolling or TV watching. I usually have multiple books in multiple genres on the go. There's my upstairs book, my downstairs book, my train book, my late night bedtime listen, my woke up too early listen, my walking about with headphones listen. For me, one book wouldn't suit all those purposes.
I keep track of them in a journal. I had to start that after I mistakenly bought a book that I'd already read a few years ago but didn't instantly remember. And now the recording of them adds almost an element of ritual that increases my enjoyment of reading even if it's a book I haven't liked that much.

I'm generally a one book at a time person, but sometimes I stretch to two if one is non-fiction or a completely frothy novel with little substance for bedtime reading.

I average around two books a month, sometimes one if it's a large book. I like to take my time and think about and appreciate the words the author has used rather than race through it to find out what happens next.

MollyFeather · 31/01/2026 18:42

I read only on a kindle and one book at a time. Only read when in bed and I’d probably say that these days I get through a couple of books a month - maybe 3 actually.

AgentPidge · 31/01/2026 18:47

I read one Book Group book per month and one or two others. Re the not starting or finishing them - I'd really recommend the library. My local one can get books in for me in less than a week if they haven't got them. I especially love just picking them off the shelf and giving them a go because if you don't feel like finishing them, no one tells you off and you can feel no guilt! And you might find something you really love.

MyThreeWords · 31/01/2026 18:48

I'm amazed by the speed of reading on this thread. I struggle to read one book a month, even though I love reading. sometimes I wonder if there is something wrong with me. I can't take the words in properly unless I reread sentences/paragraphs a LOT .

I've also recently realised that I enjoy audiobooks and drama on BBC sounds much more if I slow down the playback speed to 0.8.

I don't know if it is because I can't take info in as well as other people, or because I am a bit obsessive/anxious about absorbing every word.

Serenwib · 31/01/2026 19:03

I usually have two books on the go, one fiction and one non-fiction. Currently my non-fiction is an audiobook as I've been driving a lot and listen to it in the car.

I've read 5 books in January. Last year I think I read 80 altogether.

user1476613140 · 31/01/2026 19:13

I listen to Audible books - most recent being two of the Jennifer Worth trilogy books. I read the physical copy of the first of the trilogy as it was loaned by a relative. These books were gripping so got through them fast.

Also I am reading Benbecula at the same time. Not a big book but I don't get a lot of free time so it's taking ages to get through....

I would love to get through more books but I am a very slow reader. Audible has helped a bit with this...have just started Bleak House. And there's no way I would read a physical copy of Dicken's works!

Finally someone just like me! I often read and reread the words and sentences several times before moving on to the next paragraph. I realise this is why I can't read 80 books a year.....😬

ProfessorLeveretGrey · 31/01/2026 19:23

I read about 2 a month at the moment. I only read one at a time and only read at bedtime.

RaininSummer · 31/01/2026 19:23

Four or five and one at a time normally.
