It’s my favourite genre and I’m looking for recommendations.

I’ve read the classics like Handmaids Tale and Testaments, The Road, Fahrenheit 451, 1984, Station Eleven, Vox, The Power, Ender’s Game, The Stand, World War Z, The Mist.

I’m currently halfway through Children of Men.

I need more! Please recommend your favourite dystopian novels.

Brave New World

Not a novel, but there's a book called "The Ministry of Truth" by Dorian Lynskey. It's about Orwell's 1984, but it traces books which influenced 1984, and books which it went on to influence.

AndrogynousElf · 03/01/2026 20:42

The Flame Alphabet. It’s one of the most unnerving dystopian books ever.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 03/01/2026 20:42

Nod

SantasBairyHollocks · 03/01/2026 20:43

The wool trilogy

Apillthatmakesyousayalltherightstuff · 03/01/2026 20:45

Vox. And some Joe Abercrombie.

TheOliveFinch · 03/01/2026 20:46

Oryx and Crake trilogy by Margaret Atwood are also good, The Chrysalids is a classic that I have always loved, A boy and his dog at the end of the world

DarkEyedSailor · 03/01/2026 20:48

The Passage- Justin Cronin. Vampires, post and pre apocalyptic. Very good, although it wobbles in the middle. First of a trilogy but I haven't read the other two yet.

Hiptothisjive · 03/01/2026 20:51

A really good list! I would add How High We Go in the Dark and Age of Miracles.

Elephantsarenottheonlyfruit · 03/01/2026 20:52

Day of the triffids, war of the worlds, sequel to the power = the future

Mercurial123 · 03/01/2026 20:54

Murakami's 1Q84 and Norwegian Wood are considered to have dystopian themes.

Pianoaholic · 03/01/2026 20:54

On the Beach by Nevil Shute.
It really stayed with me, but I did have a nightmare about it!

I am re-reading “We” by Yevgeny Zamyatin. I will say no more on it, if you haven’t read it, this is one for you.

Have you read Octavia Butler?

NessShaness · 03/01/2026 20:57

I may be a 40 something woman, but I still love The Hunger Games series.

You must read this!

WinterFrogs · 03/01/2026 20:59

The Coldness of Objects by Panayotis Cacoyannis. Quite unnerving.

@Pianoaholic I read On The Beach as a teenager, and I've just borrowed it from my mum who still has it, 40+ years later!

student26 · 03/01/2026 21:00

Songlight by Moria Buffini recently won some YA awards. is quite good.

a lot of dystopian does seem more YA in focus these days.

SoScarletItWas · 03/01/2026 21:05

Woman On The Edge Of Time (Marge Piercey) is a combination utopia / dystopia story which highlights the horrors certain groups face in everyday real life against different potential futures.
