I am an avid reader but keep on choosing duds and really want a bit of escapism. Favourite books I would recommend and enjoyed are:

Perfectly Ordinary People - Nick Alexander
The Quiet end of the world - Lauren James
The last one at the party - Bethany Clift
How to kill your family - Bella Mackie
Lessons in Chemistry - Bonnie Garmus
Sorrow and Bliss - Meg Mason
The Silence of the Lambs - Thomas Harris
Hunger Games books
Alchemy - Rory Sutherland
I'm Glad my Mom died - Jennette McCurdy
You could be so pretty - Holly Bourne

Any have similar tastes that can recommend me something?

When you ask for book suggestions, try not to give an example of the bland shit you've read before

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 26/02/2025 22:40

When you're reading a thread, try not to take the bait from gobshite posters

LollyWillow · 26/02/2025 22:44

Have you reading David Nicholls? His latest, You Are Here, was terrific. But also US and One Day if you haven't watched them on the TV.
Slightly left field, but looking at what you have read and enjoyed, I think you would like Pachinko.

Tarquinthecat · 27/02/2025 18:39

How about a biography?

Wallabyone · 27/02/2025 18:50

I've read quite a few on your list:

All My Mothers by Joanna Glen
Small Pleasures by Clare Chambers
The Hand that First Held Mine by Maggie O'Farrell.

Thanks for the recommendations- they’ve been wonderfully so far! I’ve read and really enjoyed

Before and After
A place of execution
Skin Deep

I need someone else in real life to read skin deep as feel I need to talk to someone about my feelings towards Delia!

Thanks so much for all the suggestions

It’s one of favourites. Read it twice!

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue was fabulous. Also loved Frozen River.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 10/03/2025 17:30

I'm trying to get back into reading. I'm really enjoying "A Terrible Kindness" by Jo Browning Wroe.

It's a kind of human nature story. A young man at the very start of his career experiences something awful, which makes him question both his childhood and his future. I'm only halfway through, I don't know how it ends yet!

Edit: it’s a bit David Nicholls-y.

Guardup · 10/03/2025 20:37

Addie LaRue is in my top 5 best audio books @IdahoGal . I’ve not read frozen river so will add it to my list- thanks

@IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads I’ve picked up ‘a terrible kindness’ in the book shop but didn’t buy it. I do love the David Nicholls I’ve read so will check it out. Thank you

How about a biography?

I’ve read David Nivens biography recently @Tarquinthecat and I Am Malala on holiday last year. I also read Frank Skinners about 20 years ago and that’s about it!
I’m not too keen on celebrity culture and I can’t think of anyone I’m interested enough to read about. I’d love any recommendations if you have any?

@LollyWillow I’m sorry I just saw your recommendation of Pachinko. It’s not one I’d ever pick up and know very little of Korean and Japanese culture so will look forward to learning something new! Thanks

If you’re up for a memoir, Educated by Tara Westover is brilliant

Ihaveneedofwaternear · 10/03/2025 21:23

Into The Darkest Corner
Vox
Q
The Passage Trilogy - amazing!
Do you like Stephen King? I enjoyed The Stand and Misery
The Secret History
Kala
Despite the Falling Snow

Guardup · 10/03/2025 21:32

@Fandangles educated added- got great reviews too so thanks for the recommendation. I’ve also just thought I read ‘I’m glad my mom died’ which I enjoyed and after reading it I lifted the ban on that awful tv programme ‘Sam and Cat’.

I will also second the recommendation for Kala.
I thought it was a fantastic book. I was sad when it ended as I felt that I knew the characters, in fact everybody in the village, so well.

I really enjoyed “I’m glad my mom died” too, although still cannot stomach that show! 😂 DD loves it so does watch it sometimes-now I look at it and think it’s just really sad she was going through all that. She did a podcast chat with Louis Theroux which is worth a listen (although pretty much a recap of the book, was interesting to hear it in her own words)

@Wallabyone All my mothers. Just traded 15 hours of my life and I came out the winner. Beautiful book. Thank you for the recommendation
