While I impatiently await the next maeve kerrigan and strike books this year please could someone recommend another series?

My requirements are not too complicated, not too dark or gory, I can handle serial killers etc but not graphic or gratuitous violence. I like a will they won't they too

JD Kirk - Scottish Highlands settings!

Was going to recommend JD as well. His Logan series is his main series but he also has taken characters from these books and given them their own series.

Vaseem Khan Inspector Chopra /baby Ganesh and Malabar House series

I'm enjoying the Department Q books by Jussi Adler-Olsen at the moment.

Peter May, love his Harris series. Really evocative. But his other books are good too.

May be too much gore, but I also love Jo Nesbo and Camilla Lackberg if Scandi crime is your thing.

Have you read the Manon Bradshaw series by Susie Steiner? I love Maeve Kerrigan too and I enjoyed this series. Sadly the author died in 2022 so there won't be any more but I really do recommend them.

I haven’t read the Karen Pirie ones but I was a big fan of Val McDermid’s Lindsay Gordon & Kate Brannigan serieses (is that a word?) back around the millennium.

I absolutely loved the Kate Brannigan series. All my copies were from charity shops (student purchases) so I’ve got my eye on a nice new box set of the books I’ve seen on Amazon.

I loved M W Craven's Washington Poe series but they are quite gory.

I really loved Jo Callaghan's DCS Kat Frank/AIDE Lock ones.

Marion Todd's DI Clare Mackay books are pretty good. Sarah Ward has written a few series, I really enjoyed the the DC Connie Child and Mallory Dawson ones.

Another vote for both Elly Griffiths and Susie Steiner!

Sue Grafton’s Kinsey Millhone series. I found almost the complete set in a local charity shop & I’m halfway through. They work as standalone but are better read in order.

I love these, but I did actually shed a tear when the author died and they stopped at Y, I’m thinking about reading them all again now though

I loved the Manon Bradshaw books too, a really unique character. It’s so sad there won’t be any more, the author seemed like a lovely person too.

HappyPen · 07/01/2025 21:46

Simon Mason’s DI Wilkins books are really good too.

BananaSpanner · 07/01/2025 21:49

The Hawthorn books by Anthony Horowitz.

MamaNewtNewt · 07/01/2025 23:21

I think Manson Bradshaw might be my favourite fictional detective.

rockstarshoes · 07/01/2025 23:54

OMG The LJ Ross books are my guilty secret!

Other than the fact I'm obviously one book behind someone on BorrowBox & have to keep waiting for someone to return them I thought I was the only person listening to them! 🤣

With Johnathon Keeble narrating, I love them!

AnOldCynic · 08/01/2025 00:04

@hiredandsqueak Logan McRae one of my faves too. He's on a par with Rebus for me with the dark humour and great characters.

I have to say I've read some completely dross crime fiction.

Great suggestions thanks all.

Try Stephen booth, he wrote a series set in the peak district. The main character are sergeant ben cooper and d.i. diane fry.....its really gripping.

Struckbylightning · 09/01/2025 23:29

My favourite detective series is Louise Penny’s Three Pines books, set in Quebec. Wonderful characters and great stories.

HilaryThorpe · 16/01/2025 15:48

I like Marion Todd's DI Claire Mackay books. Set in St Andrew's.

Agreed. I found them really gripping through a fog-bound Christmas.

Lovelynames123 · 16/01/2025 16:18

I like JD Kirk novels, the DCI Jack Logan books have great characters, I actually laugh out loud sometimes which is unusual, but they have a serious undertone. The spin off Hoon books are also a good read.

Currently reading Jack Gatland, has a few series with different DCI main characters. Easy reads but hard to guess so not boring.

Neither are gory

HoppityBun · 17/01/2025 18:51

Tim Sullivan’s DS Cross series is excellent and I think I have a MN recommendation t thank for that

Pashazade · 17/01/2025 19:01

Another vote for Louise Penny, just fabulous, I now desperately want to visit Quebec.
Pure silliness Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series, love them!
