While I impatiently await the next maeve kerrigan and strike books this year please could someone recommend another series?

My requirements are not too complicated, not too dark or gory, I can handle serial killers etc but not graphic or gratuitous violence. I like a will they won't they too

@HoppityBun yes!! They are brilliant. I have just finished the one that came out yesterday. Definitely Tim Sullivan's DS Cross series.

Nadine matheson

Huge fan of Peter James.

Others are Charlie Gallagher, Rachel McLean and Carol Wyer

DCI Andy Gilchrist series by TF Muir set in St Andrews area.

DI Rob Marshall series by Ed James set in the Scottish Borders.

Inspector MacLean series by James Oswald set in Edinburgh.

As suggested further up the JD Kirk ones are great and the narration on Audible is fab. And the Mist Isle series as a Skye resident waiting on the next one to come out!!

Second Peter May and Elly Griffiths.

Also recommend Fred Vargas Inspector Adamsberg books, which are very whacky.

Also Ruth Downie Medicus series, set in Roman Britain

Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie series.

Have you read the Manon Bradshaw series by Susie Steiner? I love Maeve Kerrigan too and I enjoyed this series. Sadly the author died in 2022 so there won't be any more but I really do recommend them.

I think I'll try this one next!

Reporting back I have read the first Ruth Galloway, I wish I checked that it involved missing/dead children😬

I have just finished the first inspector gamache by Louise penny. Enjoyed it but I prefer a female lead and like a bit of relationship drama, too many characters in inspector gamache for me to remember who is who.

Only two months until the next maeve kerrigan !

Oh I'm sorry about Ruth Galloway, they aren't always children, the different cases if that helps?

Oddsquadnumber1 · 25/02/2025 20:12

Ah don't worry! Yes I would read another as I liked her character and the setting, just a reminder to myself to check the description on Goodreads first!

Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie series.

Oh I love those books.

OP I really enjoy the Montalbano Books by Andrea Camilleri, the plus is that they're set in Sicilly.

If you don't want over complicated though I'd try Ann Cleeves Wink

Oddsquadnumber1 · 25/02/2025 21:11

I've read all the Jackson Brodie's, I have heard of Ann sleeves, name always sticks with me, but never read one!

Anne Cleeves writes the Vera and Shetland series you may have seen on TV.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 26/02/2025 17:20

And if you like 'relationship drama' with your murder mysteries then you definitely need to try the rest of the Ruth Galloway series !

PilatesPeach · 26/02/2025 17:29

I have enjoyed the Sebastian Clifford series by Sally Rigby - book 7 is due soon. I listened to them on Audible with the fantastic Jonathan Keeble - I can't deal with too much violence or cruelty or grit but they were fine. I also enjoy the T A Williams series Murder in Tuscany series again on Audible with a great narrator. Both are ex police now turn PIs. I also enjoy Maeve Kerrigan.

TheGroovingDucksOfItchycoo · 26/02/2025 19:04

I love Ann Cleeves, especially the Vera books and LJ Ross (can you tell I'm a fan of Northumberland 😁?) As well as the books having a wonderful sense of place, they are well written, especially Ann Cleeves.

Ruth Rendell's Inspector Wexford books I also enjoyed, and in the 90s I devoured anything and everything by Margaret Yorke.

Edited

If you are a fan of Northumberland - try Mari Hannah.

Thanks for the recommendation. I always love a recommendation for something new to read.

Book74 · 27/02/2025 18:13

Try Alex Smith ,dci Robert Kett . There 18 in the series, books are set in Norfolk.

Oddsquadnumber1 · 27/02/2025 18:33

I've started the Manon Bradshaw series as of a few days ago. Enjoying it so far, seems like the kind of maeve kerrigan replacement I was looking for

@Oddsquadnumber1 how did you get on with the Manon Bradshaw series?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 19/03/2025 13:52

@Oddsquadnumber1 I think you may also enjoy the books about DC/DS Ffion Morgan by Claire Mackintosh. They also have the relationship thing and home life of the lead detectives if you like this aspect. Good stories too (I thought). Three in the series.
